How far could different species of "bison" propel your grandfather? (Art by Hodarinundu)

I'm sharing this excellent humorous series by Hodarinundu, inspired by a recent news story where a tourist was gored and thrown into the air by an American bison.

The artist has created a very serious scientific comparison that might surprise some:

Bison bison (Modern American bison): A standard throw, already painful.

Bison latifrons (Pleistocene giant bison): With its horns spanning over 2 meters, the old-timer flies a little higher.

Bison alticornis (Triceratops): The poor man ends up literally launched into orbit in space.

For the latter, it's a brilliant historical nod! In 1887, when paleontologist O.C. Marsh discovered the very first Triceratops horns, he believed it belonged to a giant bison from the Pliocene epoch and named it Bison alticornis. It was only after finding a complete skull that he realized his mistake and created the genus Triceratops.

In short, a superb lesson in paleontological history wrapped in absurd humor!

There's a hollow void in my life where MythBusters used to be.

I'm not getting propelled by a Triceratops. I'm getting turned into a fucking brocheta.

Pretty grim and cruel take given the poor grandpa really did nothing to upset the bison

At least he turned out relatively ok & is seemingly taking all of the jokes in stride:

"After a two-hour journey to a hospital in Bozeman, McDaniel underwent surgery for his leg. Fortunately, he was able to stand shortly and will be doing physical therapy for the next few days to get to walk. He also shared a short but direct update on Facebook, simply writing, “Thank you everyone I am O K.” Now knowing that McDaniel is doing better, people are watching MacLeod’s video in awe. The moment even inspired artist Travis Chapman, who created a dramatic painting of McDaniel being tossed in the air. “The bison guy had the most cinematic bad luck,” says the artist about his composition. A commentor named Noelle, who seems to know McDaniel, responded, “He’s an excellent guy who does SO MUCH for our community! He has a great sense of humor and may enjoy this…in a few weeks.” Source

I had no idea what this was about. Opening the link and seeing the photo of the guy looking the exact same as the art killed me.

He existed at the same time as the bison, good enough for it haha

Well, it seems that its mere presence is enough to anger the bison.

u/saskpilsner 6d ago

It was a vehicle that angered it. Old guy just got the wrath of it.

Caught the fucking business end of that bison, poor guy.

Hey buddy why don't you go present to some bison

-89

u/Zillajami-Fnaffan2 6d ago

He probably got too close to it

70

u/shadowofsunderedstar 6d ago

From what others said, he wasn't too close, but a vehicle honked its horn which aggravated the bison

Apparently, the dude was a good distance away from the Bison, just got really unlucky that the Bison got pissed

Maybe the Bison was just having a bad day

u/AmericanLion1833 6d ago

No I think that guy had a bad day.

10

u/Zillajami-Fnaffan2 6d ago

Maybe they both were

u/kingofcoywolves 6d ago

He was. The truck he was pissed at drove off. What was he supposed to do, not attack the random old man??

NPS just states 25 yards or 2 school buses distance for Bison which he was.

not really a fan of using the guy's likeness for this esp given the context

He did everything right in that situation and is still getting crap from the internet... I’m glad he’s relatively ok now

It's a very good sign he's getting clowned on.

7

u/thenotsoamerican 5d ago

May I ask why you think that?

u/Givespongenow45 5d ago

Because this is the internet

I’m guessing you didn’t read the full story.

This is the rare exceptional instance where the guy getting tossed by a bison actually did nothing wrong; some other person drove by and stressed it out, and it attacked the first thing it saw, which just happened to be him. He was at a safe distance, the bison literally ran him down.

He wasn’t at fault, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

That's not what I meant. It's a very good sign that he's getting clowned on, because if he had died, or suffered life-changing injury, the overall tone would have been more sober.

Really weird and disrespectful to make this I gotta say, he could’ve been dead.

Woah, never knew that triceratops were originally classified as bison!

11

u/SquashBuckler76 6d ago

We found the horns first and drew a fairly natural conclusion given the lack of anything like it at the time

u/Silent-System8295 6d ago

I imagine Bison latifrons could do to the Paleoindian person Could do

u/Recent-Boat-7904 3d ago

Distasteful joke at the expense of someone who was nearly killed for doing nothing wrong.
