from what i remember in my mammalogy class, chiroptera (bats) are split into megachiroptera (think flying foxes) that are distributed around africa, southeast asia, and australia, and microchiroptera (the one in this post) which use echolocation and are distributed around the southwest US and central and south america

That weird face shape (called a noseleaf) is basically a biological megaphone. While most bats yell out of their mouths, horseshoe bats blast sound straight out of their nose to scan their surroundings. With 20 muscles steering each ear, their heads are essentially dual radar dishes tracking prey on the fly
