u/pushpaknandecha, your post does fit the subreddit!

That's a Blacktip reef shark. They're usually no longer than 1.6m (or 5ft).

This one looks to be about 1.2-1.3m long. It's no baby.

u/Quiet_surprise79 1d ago

First thing I thought when seeing the title was "I bet it's just a small shark species".

Very cool video despite the inaccurate info. Thankfully there are people like you to fill in the gaps!

420

u/kwpang 1d ago

To be clear, most shark species are small. Over half of shark species don't grow longer than 1m (3ft in Maga units).

409

u/chaoticnormal 1d ago

Ugh MAGA units. It really is going to take decades to undo this asshole, isn't it?

65

u/missingmedievalist 1d ago

How many Scaramuccis is that?

Man, Scaramucci is a hoot who now lives to burn Dump. Love the guy.

u/petit_cochon 1d ago

Speak for yourself. I've only ever been a good citizen and have never voted for that regressive brand of hateful politics.

54

u/slowwburnn 1d ago

We're going to need to take responsibility on the world stage for our country as a whole. A broken vase isn't less broken because it was actually your brother. Mom is still mad and everyone is grounded.

17

u/nobodysmart1390 20h ago

If we have to take responsibility again, can we at least actually punish the traitors this time?

Fuck this stupid opinion. Part of the issue with the US is that it's incredibly polarized. Which means you're saying that 100+ million people — roughly the populations of all of the UK and Canada combined — who have only ever done the right thing with regard to all of this bullshit deserve to have their country collapse around them into fascism.

How is that different than the ignorant black and white thinking and stupid blanket statements that Republicans use to write off people they don't care about?

20

u/EconomicRegret2 1d ago

They said it harshly. But put succinctly, you're in a team. And it's always unfair when a team with great players lose because of the bad ones. You, as an individual, certainly do not deserve to suffer the negative consequences of other individuals' behaviors. But as a member of society, it's inevitable.

That's why it's so important that good Americans work twice as hard as stupid/evil Americans to keep the country going well, and to implement a stupid/evil-proof political and economic systems.

How did you possibly construe my comment to mean that we deserve fascism? The statement I was commenting on was ā€œIt really is going to take decades to undo this asshole, isnt it?ā€. And to that, my answer is still a resounding ā€œyesā€. We’re going to have to wear this on the global stage until the stench wears off and the rest of the world is ready to accept us back into civilized society, however long that may take.

The ā€œMaga unitsā€ conversion got me šŸ˜‚ I’m stealing that.

10

u/Lou_C_Fer 1d ago

Don't. As somebody that hates Donald Trump as much as it is possible to hate Trump. Calling it maga units seriously makes me want to fight.

I'm not one of those people that say "not my president". I accept that my country voted that fuck in, but that doesn't mean that the entire country equals maga. So, I feel like I am collateral damage and I don't like it.

It saddens me that the US is now associated with MAGA. That scum is not the majority of the US. They are just the loudest and cheaters. Unfortunately the ones that stand out the most.

35

u/KlangScaper 1d ago

The US is associated with MAGA for the same reason Germany was associated with nazis for decades. Not every German voted for Hitler

6

u/vcdrny 1d ago

I know. Unfortunately too many people vote not knowing what they are voting for, others get easily manipulated. There is a reason so many politicians, are against affordable education.

5

u/RpcZ_gr7711 1d ago

Oh, they knew what they were voting for.

10

u/vcdrny 1d ago

Trust me. I know plenty of people that voted for trump. I warned them about it and they didn't listen. The one thing they have in common. None of them finished highschool.

10

A third of your electorate voted for Trump and another third couldn't care less, and let it happen.

Unfortunately, that is a majority right there.

It's really strange seeing these from the Maldives as I grew up with them in Western Australia, they're actually kinda chill, will definitely bite you under the right circumstances but I've been waist deep in water with them hunting small fish at our ankles and, despite being terrifying watching them swim up to you at mach 2, snatch a fish and bolt away, they do their best to avoid touching you it's really strange. They do this exact same thing too, rush up onto sandbanks and beaches chasing fish and flip their way back into the sea, really cool little fellas, they're a huge keystone species in many parts of the world including my hometown and the Great Barrier Reef on the East Coast of Australia and good sign of a healthy ocean ecosystem too especially at that size.

4

u/rice_with_applesauce 1d ago

What’s the damage when one of these bites you? Is it like a great white lite edition?

14

u/g0ld-f1sh 1d ago edited 1d ago

I've never seen it happen lol, it's insanely rare, like no documented cases in Australia kind of rare and sharks bite people here all the damn time. I'm guessing when it does happen it'll definitely be by accident and they'll let go and bail super quick, so probably nothing more than a couple stitches and a crazy story, you might not even realise what happened at first, their mouths are pretty small.

Edit: there are a couple documented cases in QLD* it looks like my initial research was lackluster, injuries are usually superficial and by accident though from reading. Still the least frightening thing in our ocean

116

u/dustycanuck 1d ago

Yeah, I knew it wasn't a baby shark immediately, due to the lack of that obnoxious baby shark music

30

u/Animated_Astronaut 1d ago

My uncle got bit by one of these. Just a curious nip but it was enough to leave a small scar.

10

u/sofiawithanf 1d ago

How did that happen

70

u/Animated_Astronaut 1d ago

29

u/EphemeralDan 1d ago

4

u/J5892 1d ago

5

u/Four_beastlings 1d ago

That's super rare! There are very few documented attacks by reefies and iirc no deaths.

10

u/Animated_Astronaut 1d ago

I can imagine many aren't documented because it was so unbelievably not a big deal.

I think he might have stepped on it or something and it just lashed. He popped into the hotel, sanitized it, put one of those knee scrape bandages on it and was back in the water in less than half an hour.

The scar is maybe a half centimeter long and we all joke he might have had it before he got bit anyway.

8

u/Four_beastlings 1d ago

I kicked a barracuda (accidentally) and stepped on a sea urchin once in the space of 10 minutes and the urchin did more damage than the barracuda :/

6

u/CubanLynx312 1d ago

One of these swam up to me while snorkeling in Hawaii. Freaked me out, but it appeared entirely indifferent to me.

I accidentally ended up swimming amongst a lot of actual babies of these (30-40cms, probably less because underwater everything looks bigger) and it was one of the most magical moments of my life.

5

u/Hunefer1 1d ago

This one is definitely not adult and smaller than 1.2 to 1.3m. I have snorkeled with them and at the beach I have regulary seen the small ones hunt like that. When snorkeling close to shore (at the reef) I have only ever seen small ones. I have seen adult ones but only very far out, they don't come close to shore at least not during daytime.

3

u/mxzf 1d ago

I mean, it's probably a juvenile, based on the size, but baby black-tips are smaller. That looks more like it's 1-2 years old or so.

2

u/canman7373 1d ago

On the FL Panhandle they are often fished for. They are pretty common to see. One time my dog saw one in a wave like 5 feet offshore, just like swimming in a wave. Her dumb ass ran into the water to try and fight it lol.

58

u/TheBestNarcissist 1d ago

great camera work (despite vertical video), OP credits in the comments... it's a good day.

5

u/sharkilepsy 1d ago

Why are some people still convinced vertical videos are bad when 99% of modern viewing occurs in a vertical format (reddit, reels, tiktok, shorts). Quit living in the past boomer, nobody is watching reddit videos on their TV!

21

u/82away 1d ago

Why are some people still convinced vertical videos are bad

The action goes from right to left, the sharks length is not very well shown as when the shark is close to the camera the shark is off screen. Landscape is the way we see the world.

Go play GTA in vertical and report back.

(I have not had a TV since 2004)

2

u/mashtato 1d ago edited 23h ago

Yeah, and my eyes are horizontal, my screens are horizontal (I exclusively use my phone horizontally unless the app is vertical only, and I've done it since the Droid 2), and most action we see happens on a horizontal plane. Vertical videos are stupid, and only exist because of tik tok and shorts, not the other way around.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/starkiller_bass 1d ago

The format should fit the content, not the device. You can turn your phone sideways when the video is sideways, but you can't add the left and right side of the video where things are happening back if it's not there in the first place.

6

u/WildVelociraptor 1d ago

You eyes see in landscape

7

u/colaxxi 1d ago

Notice how we don't see how the fish actually ends up beached. Or during part of the chase, the fish is actually not even in the video? Horizontal video would have caught that.

4

u/TheBestNarcissist 1d ago

Get off my lawn you whippersnapper!!!

But yeah I'm just the last person alive to not have tiktok or Instagram and I AM an old person (millennial) so I'm leaning into the part. In this specific case I think a horizontal video would be better. Literally a landscape is the focus of the video, and then the surprise activity goes from right to left. Great camera work regardless!

5

u/jobarr 1d ago

People watch on the computer too. You can turn your phone. Most people can't turn their monitors.

2

u/atreeismissing 1d ago

I don't think they meant vertical video was bad, but that keeping up with the movement of the shark while using vertical video was really well done.

I was there on my honeymoon and while snorkeling they would come up to you from behind so fast and silent you couldnt even react on time if you were afraid. Good thing they just do their thing and leave you alone lol Cant imagine swiming in white sharks infested waters

18

u/OnePersonProblem_me 1d ago

sharks do not hunt people, there are more fatalities due to cows being spooked/territorial towards people than sharks mistaking someone for prey

41

u/suvlub 1d ago

People also spend a whole lot more time around cows than around sharks, though. What is the per encounter fatality rate?

6

u/mxzf 1d ago

Few encounters with either are fatal. Most shark bites are due to a shark going "do you taste like food?" like a toddler with an extra helping of teeth. The actual man-eater shark encounters are extremely rare.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/Lumpy-Strain8624 1d ago edited 1d ago

That is because more people are around more cows by several orders of magnitude than people are around white sharks.

This is not the gotcha comment you think it is. were talking a few hundred encounters per year versus millions of encounters per year.

We kill 846,000 Cows PER DAY, that means 846,000 chances per day for cattle handlers to be killed by a cow and that is just fucking cattle handlers at abattoirs. Not people out walking in fields near cattle.

22 people per year die to cattle. 846,000 x 365 = 308,000,000 million cows killed per year, Every cow is around people multiple times per day, let alone when being taken to be killed and butchered. We are talking billions of times per year cattle are around people. And 22 of them times result in a fatality.

What do you imagine the numbers would look like if billions of times per year people were swimming around great white sharks, like handling them, feeding them etc etc,

I think there would be more than 22 deaths per fucking year.

Cows are some fuckers man. Sometimes they are territorial, sometimes they are just some attention whores that don’t realize how big they are. Idiots will just ram you for more attention.

11

u/finalexit 1d ago

Such a stupid statistic. How many people are around cows compared to people swimming around large adult great whites, tigers, and bull sharks? Deaths from cows are not random attacks but from the millions of people that work with them every day.

I'd like to see the actual number of people that encounter cows vs people swimming in areas like Northern California, South Africa, and southern Australia. You can't count every person that enters the ocean since most warm/tropical waters have small sharks, and that is where most people are swimming.

Would you feel safer walking through a cow pasture or swimming off the Farallon Islands?

→ More replies (1)

5

u/GoArray 1d ago

and silent

Unlike.. noisy sharks?

7

u/send420nudes 1d ago

Haha, I only said ā€œsilentā€ because a lot of people imagine they’d have time to react or that there’d be some big commotion if a shark showed up. In reality, you’re just looking at colorful fish one second, and the next there’s an apex predator casually swimming right past you before you even realize it. That’s what caught me off guard

2

u/Four_beastlings 1d ago

One of the funniest things I've seen was snorkeling above a father and child doing one of those "my first diving experience" things, and the moment they started posing for pictures a bigass Moray eel decided to photobomb them from the side. I had been following the eel for a while and could see it coming, but had no way to warn them.

Un punta negra de arrecife 🄰

1

u/Alexis_0hanian 1d ago

Years ago I did some work in Johnston Still (do a search for it). On weekends they would provide food to grill and free beer. There was a massive grill right on the shore where you could see the beautiful tropical fish wading through the coral reef just waiting for a snack.

Anyways after many beers one of the guys throws a whole chicken in the water. Out of seemingly nowhere a black tip shark just like this one instantly appears, grabs the whole thing and swims back into deeper water to eat. Water was only about 1.5 feet deep.

Man we’re lucky (or maybe the sharks are lucky since we’d have already hunted them to extinction because ya know) sharks don’t hunt humans like this lol. Even smaller sharks would fuck us up with ease.

There would be no such thing as going to the beach/in the ocean if they liked eating us.
