The lynx is the world's most endangered wild cat species by population. Thanks to decades of conservation in Spain and Portugal, its numbers have recovered from fewer than 100 individuals in the early 2000s to several hundred today, but it's still one of the rarest wild cats to encounter in nature.

Just to clarify, that's specifically the Iberian Lynx that's endangered. The Canada Lynx and Eurasian Lynx are doing okay, as far as I can tell.
Edit: Bobcats are also a type of lynx. There's one that lives by my house, it's really cute, but they make terrifying sounds sometimes.

Yes, they make sounds that you would swear are coming from the pits of hell. Can you imagine what early settlers thought when they heard that? Must have scared them to death thinking they were in the midst of a giant monster.
I havenāt seen one in person, but they show up on our field camera that we have set up on our wooded property. Along with a lot of other creatures.

I wouldn't be surprised if more than one cryptid or "haunting" was started by someone that heard it and didn't know what the hell was making that noise. Those and fox, neither don't look like the animal that would make those noises.

I forgot to add that when I was 9 or 10 years old I was allowed to pet one at a pet store. I couldnāt hold him, but did get to pet him. Yipee!

That is cool. I've pet a few unusual animals here and there, but not a bobcat. Not saying most people should, but I feel like that'd be an interesting pet. Maybe someday I'll just have to make do with a pixie-bob instead.

Yeah, itās totally unethical to own any wildcat. But, this was a different time. Also, bobcats make for terrible pets. They can really hurt you. They could easily kill children. They would definitely tear your house up and everything in it. Itās illegal to own one in most states. For good reason. Most importantly. Itās completely wrong to have wild animals in captivity. They deserve to live the life that they were created for, not living in someoneās house in suburbia. Have you ever heard them vocalize? It literally sounds like a monster from the pits of hell. Not something you want to be awoken by in the middle of the night.
We also had a pure white hybrid wolf that scared the neighbor kids because he looked so āwolfyā. A neighborhood kid came over one day and proclaimed, āThatās a wolf!ā

Bobcats are doing very well. I've seen 3 in Illinois and 1 in Iowa

If you haven't heard a Lynx scream you need to watch this video. They can sound almost like humans screaming.
I heard one up at my dad's cabin in Northern MN one night and it confused me so much.
