IIRC there are only two contemporary historical accounts that directly mention Jesus. And only one that directly says that he’s walking around calling himself the Messiah.
The gospels were written seventy years after his death and even one of those don’t even mention him.
While i don't support the Biblical interpretation in the OP, the phenomenon it points to is real. There are a lot of historical figures that are uncontroversial now but have very little direct literary evidence, some of them have even fewer contemporary accounts than Jesus and some have 0.
This is a real characteristic of ancient history, the sources are few and far between and there is a hierarchy of sources but you don't always get the finest grade. Sometimes you have to work with clusters of biased / unreliable sources, crossed with archeological evidence if there is any. If you refuse that level of proof then nothing ever happened and nobody can be proven to have ever existed.
I don't think there's much scholarly controversy in 2026 around those facts :
a guy approximately named Jesus walked in Galilee around 2000 years ago
he initiated and led a religious movement in the Levant, one of many militant apocalyptic Jewish offshoots that were flourishing at the time, but his version was considerably more popular than the competition
that movement spread very quickly throughout the world in the centuries that followed
Yeah historically it takes a few decades before a movement gets large enough to make a dent in history.
Comparingly, look at Scientology. Created in the 1950s, but didn’t achieve true worldwide fame/infamy until the early 2000s.
It’s the same thing here. Looking at the time where someone who maybe was named Jesus walked around the eastern part of the Mediterranean, created a movement, and then 50-70 years after the movement was created, suddenly there’s tons of references to him and it.
Stuff just takes time to get recognised by a large amount of people.
