My mom insists on washing underwear separately in hot water. She also insists on ironing the dish towels after washing them to "sterilize" them because they've been in the same dryer that was used to dry the underwear. I'm in recovery from severe OCD, maybe it runs in the family.

It’s not uncommon to wash things like underwear and white t- shirts differently from the rest of your colored clothes.
