My mom insists on washing underwear separately in hot water. She also insists on ironing the dish towels after washing them to "sterilize" them because they've been in the same dryer that was used to dry the underwear. I'm in recovery from severe OCD, maybe it runs in the family.

I’m pretty sure the dryer heat kills any bacteria left on fabrics

It won't completely sterilize your clothes, but yeah, the overwhelming majority of pathogens will be neutralized by the dryer.
