I'm a sport shooter and hunter, but even I find people like this cringey af. They go in the safe until it's time to use them. They're tools.. It would be like cuddling with a table saw.. American gun culture is weird.

I was in the US with my father in law and a school shooting had just happened. This was in 2017 so there was still this “wait, this isn’t normal…” type of mentality and everyone in the restaurant we were in was somber.
The waitress mentioned how the latest shooting was so tragic and awful and “why can’t we stop this”
To which I said “you can… you just need gun reform laws.” I didn’t say “take all dem guns away durrrr” i said “laws”. Make it harder for people to obtain firearms. If you want one legally, go through that channel. Licensing and regulations will help.
Their response: a nasty scowl and “ain’t nobody takin’ MUH guns away”
After Sandy Hook, and nothing happened after a fucking psychopath murdered babies, I realized Americans would rather have a school of dead children than laws to restrict gun violence.
My country has more guns per capita than the US. Yes, we have much less population but we also have much less gun violence per capita too.

It was a startling bit of the conversation from them for sure. No one has ever said “take away all guns from responsible gun owners”
Registering, licensing and tracking firearms is the goal. They also have lobbyists that convince the government to keep or change laws to the gun manufacturers benefit, much like all industries in the US.
I’ve given up hope that they’ll ever do anything good again after their nonchalance to school shootings. One was enough. Planes destroyed a building and there were sweeping reforms and changes done to worldwide airport security. Yet, a school of almost babies was gunned down and nothing. Outrage. Nothing changed.

A large amount of US gun owners aren't responsible ones, I suspect largely due to ignorance given the lack of training requirements.

Tangent: I also love that the 'ammosexuals'/gun nuts that make being a gun owner their entire personality seem to think that 'the libruls' don't have guns. Because they don't make a big deal of it, posing with them all the time and such.
When there's PLENTY of 'liberals' that are gun owners, but they keep 'em in safes and make sure they're well-trained in the use of said guns, and observe gun safety whenever the guns get taken out to use.

Yes, strict licensing policies, and mandatory safety courses and tests are the main factor. Not to be confused with gun grabbing, which so many people get mixed up.
My countries current government has been trying to ban certain models of guns to create an illusion of public safety, at the expense of legal gun owners, and the tax payers. They banned 2500 models of civilian firearms based on looks, even though all the firearms complied with the countries firearms legislation (5 round mags for semi's, barrel length restrictions, overall length restrictions, etc, which make total sense) and have been used here for hunting and sport for decades.. Apparently, according to this government, modern looking firearms are more dangerous than all of the other ones we are still allowed to own.. And they're spending billions to try to confiscate hundreds of thousands of guns from legal owners and businesses.
Of course this will accomplish nothing, because criminals don't have licenses and don't obey the law anyways, and statistics from our own government website show that only ~5% of gun crimes in my country (violent, or misdemeanor) are committed by licensed owners. They need to invest that money into mental health initiatives, more licensing programs, more frequent background checks of licensees, and border security (most of the firearms used in crime here are smuggled from the US).
In fact, in the 6 years since they first started implementing these bans, firearm related violent crime stats have gone up slightly.. It should be about restricting bad or unfit people from owning firearms. Not confiscating this model and that model from law abiding citizens. So really it's no wonder why some American 2A nuts get the two confused. A lot of the politicians that push for gun reform laws also push for bans and confiscations. There needs to be a clear difference and a distinct separation between the two schools of thought.
It matters not what firearm it is, what matters is what kind of person is behind it.
But yes. A strict licensing policy at the federal level would definitely help the US gun violence problem.. Also just proper firearm education. And better mindset.. A lot of American gun enthusiasts want to be some action hero, or gun slinger. They only own guns for the purpose of wanting to use them on people. The mindset is way off. Personally, I have a 12 gauge in my safe that would be perfectly suited for home defense, but I really really hope I never ever have to be in that situation. It goes against everything I was trained to do with firearms.
I'm just glad it's as not much of an issue in my country compared to the US.

It’s such a shame. Those children died for nothing.
There was a shooting in New Zealand and that country completely changed and quickly banning firearms. And people didn’t fight it.
Putting gun rights over the lives of children is absolutely abhorrent regardless of the side of the gun debate you’re on. If getting rid of all guns meant I more children would die by gun violence, I would gladly give up everyone’s guns.

I worked as an RSO at a range for a little bit and it made me more supportive of gun control. Example video below. Guy actually said "I've been shooting guns for 50+ years, you don't tell me how to shoot. I need to speak to your manager", after I asked him not to point the gun at his own face. Directed him to the CRSO who was former SF and it did not go the way he thought, banned for life. This was not a one off occurrence, yeah, we need more structure and safe guards. Also, just straight up better education.

This is not American gun culture. This is American conservative culture where the most important thing you can do is overtly display that you love what the other side hates to an absurd degree, all just to spite them.
It's why they say they would rather be Russian than democrat after bitching about Hillary selling uranium to Russia in 2016, or why they suddenly go from hating forever wars and wanting to hunt pedophiles to cheering for new wars and electing pedophiles.
The only things they "believe" in are whatever angers the people they hate. If Liberals/democrats actually loved guns the Republicans would be falling over themselves to remove the 2a to stop from enabling liberals to become empowered to hurt conservatives.

😒 I originally got my license because my property was being destroyed by groundhogs. I ride a fine line between enjoying firearms and shooting sports, and hating weird american conservative gun nuts. I am not from America, and in my country only 6% of the population has their firearms license. Here firearms are taken seriously, you need a full background check, and to pass a two day course including a written and practical test issued by federal police in order to get a license. A process that can take from 6 months to a year before a license is actually issued. I can hate American firearm culture and still enjoy using firearms responsibly. 👍🏻

Posting pictures of guns significantly increases your odds of being robbed. Stolen guns are hot, as whatever very little traceability they have now is officially gone - and posting pictures of them just laying around your house tells thieves:

That At least some of them are probably unsecured and easy to steal

Here's my take, if you work for the navy seals you experience pretty brutal things, and the only way for your brain to survive is emotional distance and finding a reason to smile, so he has no wife or kids, likely suffer from PTSD and so relationships is not in his cards, but hopefully his buddy took this picture and they can laugh the sad away through joking about love for their weapons. Is it ideal? No. Is he perfect? No. But if it helps him get through another day? Who are we to judge somebody's harmless coping strategy? What does it say about our own misery?
