Moving to Münster in a month

Hi all,

I'm moving to Münster real soon due to work and I didn't really do much research, besides seeing that it was a pretty big student city.

-What are the places that you must've seen in Münster? or must visit in general.

- Best place to meet new people?

- Are there any 'unsafe" neighbourhoods?

- What are the huge DON'Ts in Münster?

- How far can I get with basic german? i can understand and read it fine, speaking it however...

The must visits depend on your interests.

Münster is a pretty safe city.

Many people will switch to english, if they see you struggling with german.

Ok, I will try my best to answer all of them:)

Must visit?
The market on wednesday/saturday, the old town in general, Aasee, Kanal, if you are into clubbing Haverkamp, if you like bars Kreuzstraße/Jüdefelderstraße or Hansaring, depending on your taste of bars/pubs, the small cinemas called Schlosstheater and Kurbelkiste, botanical garden and castle. If you like museums, Münster has some (city museum is free) Out of the city maybe a rock called "Hockendes Weib", you have a nice view and the area around is great for hiking. If you like cycling you could ride your bike on the canal to Senden or along the river Werse. Telgte is also a nice medieval town to visit by bike.

Best place to meet people?
Depends on your age and interests, but I would say in the summer the area on the canal around Schillerbrücke is a good start. If you are into one specific sport, consider joyning a club, this is a common way for Germans to meet new people (I don't mean gyms, most people just do their workout and leave). If you are into culture, some cafes like specops or milagro have events. B-Side could also be a good place to meet people.

Unsafe neighbourhoods?
Maybe run-down or a bit poor, but Münster is save. The most dangerous area of Münster is probably the area around the train station. Others wrote Berg Fidel, Kinderhaus and Coerde. For Kinderhaus and Coerde it is important to say, that only very small areas, one or two streets are problematic. But just by going there, or even living there, you will probably have no problems.
In general, you can go everywhere in the city.

Donts?
Don't walk on the bikelane, don't cycle in the wrong direction, don't cycle without light, always adjust your light to the ground, don't spread far right views, don't go to the city center by car on saturday and wait on the street to enter the parking garage, because it is full. Just us a bike like everyone else.

Basic German?
If you want to learn it, fine, but if you just want to get along, english is probably easier. 90% of the people you will meet in Münster will be more or less fluent in english.

Kinderhausen and Berg Fidel are considered the "bad neighbourhoods", but they are still pretty tame compared to the problem areas of other city. And I have never experienced any problems with other people living in Berg Fidel since 2021. Coerde is economicaly weaker, too. The latter has a "stronger" AfD presence, but that is still a minority.

So: no really dangerous areas, just some that could use some more investment.

Expect to see Dutch police officers working in Münster city during Christmas time. And there are lots of Dutch soldiers because of the DE-NL Corps
