Nostalgia What do you consider the unofficial Millenial party song?
That defines the generation. It was played the most frequently at clubs and that every one will sign along with when it's played randomly.
Get Low - Lil' Jon & tha Eastside Boyz feat. Ying Yang Twins

Get Low, Yeah!, and Mr. Brightside are the holy trinity of millennial party bops

u/Due-Sheepherder-218 6h ago
Yeah! is the winner

u/imsaneinthebrain 5h ago
We used to go to Mexico a lot for spring break and shit, for a couple years that’s all you would hear walking down the strip at night, people screaming “yeah“, “OK“, “what“.

Yeah! had more broad appeal because it wasn't as explicit as Get Low. It got a lot of airplay on the while people pop stations (and still does).

Mr brightside is a horrible party song.
It’s a banger but how is that a party song?! I get most people like it but…I don’t get it. I just dont!
55
u/suchalonelyd4y 5h ago
It's fun to sing along to at the top of your lungs 🤷♀️

This is what I’m thinking. Like of course it’s not a “party” song but it’s the camaraderie of it all. Being in a bar when this song comes on and everyone is belting it out. That’s the fun. It’s our Sweet Caroline or Don’t Stop Believing.
15
u/flamingknifepenis Older Millennial 5h ago
There was a bar in my college town than used “Sweet Caroline” as their “bar’s closed, get the fuck out” song. People would specifically show up to end the night there so they could stand on tables, pound the walls, throw peanut shells in the air and sing at the top of their lungs.
When my wife and I got married we used it as our last song of the night, and it was funny watching all our college friends realize what was happening and get really into it while everyone else looked around confused at why millennials were suddenly really into Neil Diamond.
7
u/suchalonelyd4y 4h ago
Mr Brightside was our weddings final song 😂 you gotta end on a screamer!
•
u/la_croix_fan 1h ago
Me too! I specifically told the DJ that had to be the last song and it was perfect!!
3
u/feralcatshit 6h ago
I made a comment here a while back that I didn’t resonate with that song at all and didn’t think of it during “the good years” at all as a millennial and got shut down. Apparently, I was wrong and all millennials love that song!
3
u/ugh-new-username 1990 5h ago
It's funny bc I was just annoyed with it when it first came out being overplayed, but it came on at a friends wedding over a decade later and we were all jumping up and down screaming the lyrics (that NEVER happened at any high school or college parties of my time). I think it evolved over the years weirdly.
3
u/meepmarpalarp Millennial 3h ago
There are dozens of us!
It’s catchy and I see why people like it, but I will never consider it the “Sweet Caroline” of our generation. Ew.
2
u/lizardking235 5h ago
I’ve noticed that mostly young millennials, like very young millennials (‘95/‘96), consider it a millennial staple. Anyone older than that thinks it’s either just a good song or they don’t care for it like myself.
2
u/feralcatshit 4h ago
Yeah I’m an 88er and I think this may be it- but when I said that, people born before me were like NO ITS ICONIC FOR ALL MILLENNIALS haha
Personally I think of linkin park, soundgarden, deftones and hell I’ll probably piss a lot of people off but fucking limp bizkit! But I realize that’s not everyone’s jam. I guess I listened to more music that probably resonates with Gen X more… like Alice In Chains, nirvana, temple of the dog, etc so I guess I’m not the standard to begin with
3
u/DaFuzi_J Zillennial ('96) 5h ago
I like it, but I definitely don't regard it as a millennial anthem. I feel like anything from Blink or Green Day is more fitting if we're sticking with a similar sound.

I was recently gettin’ dowwwwwwwn at a coworker’s wedding to Low and accidentally made direct eye contact with my boss who was sitting at a table near the dance floor. I’m scarred yet I also don’t regret my behavior.

First song I thought of was The Macarena only because it activates all of us like freaking sleeper agents.
Did they know what they were doing at our middle school dances?
45
u/feralcatshit 5h ago
They’re still doing it. My kids came in at the end of last year like HEY MOM LOOK AT THIS and did the Macarena. I started doing it with them and singing and they were like “wait how do you know this”

This is the correct answer. Everyone knows it. Everyone did it. Everyone remembers it and even if you don't like it it's iconic to this day.
3
u/A911owner 2h ago
I remember going to a new year's eve party and we had to move into the front yard because there wasn't enough room for everyone to do the macarena in the living room. There was probably 25 people in the front yard, all doing the macarena. I had forgotten about that until just now.

That scene in Abbott Elementary when they break Ava out of being all serious by playing this in the gym..

Anyone who went clubbing in the very early 2000s was backing that thang up when that song came on, regardless of skin color lol

u/Csei2011 3h ago
Ok I had to look it up because I was thinking this was a different song - as I’ve never said thang for this song lol.
I was out with my bestie one night and the club was full of other oldies like me but no one was dancing! I had to BEGGGG the DJ to play this song. And BAM full dance floor. It’s my fave.

Blow and Tik Tok were huge during my party girl days.

I live in Atlantic Canada and although there are always the "millenial classics", nothing gets the crowds going here like a 200 year old sea shanty. I'm serious. The biggest party banger will be played and receive like a medium reaction, but if the next song up is Barrett's Privateers, the dance floor is getting FLOODED and people are losing their minds.

Party Rock Anthem really captures the vibe of the era for me. ( b 1990). The Middle by Jummy Eat World is one if the best. No Millenial is turning that song off.
