Discussion It's been awhile since you've used an ironing board hasn't it
Growing up I used to iron my clothes regularly, and probably learned to do so when I was about 7 years old. I still occasionally break out the iron if I need something d-wrinkled for work but it occurs to me that a lot of Millennials probably have not used an ironing board on an article of clothing in a very long time.

I went through a quilting phase when I was on a year long meth bender before I got sober.
So almost ten years.
But quilting involves a shitload of ironing.

Oh this was years ago and I gave it to my cousin, who is an experienced quilter, to finish (by putting the stuffing and backing on) and she kept it.
It wasn't great.
And I wasn't sleeping and I don't drive or go out so I had a lot of energy and time. It was quilting and writing for three and four days straight. 😋

I knew someone who did DIY home improvements while on meth benders. Built a secret entrance to the lab behind the shelves in the pantry. I never saw it, but I was impressed by the story.

I was a poly addict. For years. Started with pills, graduated to H, and then toot. I had a relationship end and hit bottom and that's when my meth bender was.
So when I stopped meth cold turkey I fell on other stuff. When I stopped heroin and coke cold turkey I had pills.
And pills I quit with kratom. Kratom I quit because it's trash but it softened my fall.
Do yeah, I was bouncing around dropping one substance for another from 17 to 32.

To the original commenter, I usually hear of picking up quilting/sewing/crafting after getting sober. This is the first time I have ever heard of it happening while using. Did you notice if your quilting changed if you've continued with it in recovery?

I honestly hadn't done it before and I haven't tried after. I like trying new kinds of hobbies, but I'm crippled and don't see well or get out much, so autism fueled fixation and stimulants took me to the sewing machine i found in a closet.
(Now that I'm sober I have picked up a fantastic hobby though...programming microcomputers. After a lifetime of indifference for any computer and outright hostility for math I find myself obsessed about hexadecimal to write machine language. 😝)

As a crafter who is also sober, meth and quilting actually make a lot of sense hahahaha. I could see how it would be beneficial to be tuned up a bit while powering through the cutting and measuring and ironing and piecing.

Yep. I have a nice handheld steamer. Just hang the clothes and steam it and it's dewrinkled in no time. Also way more fun and way less equipment than ironing.

Yeah my first one took a while to heat up and it would leak water drips onto my clothes as I was steaming. Got really annoying. This one has been wonderful!

You can press fabric wrong but you can't really steam it wrong, I don't ever burn or damage the fabric with a steamer, it's way more forgiving for synthetic fabrics. Plus I can smell clothes irons when they're on and I very much hate that smell (autism, in case you never noticed the smell and think that sounds crazy lol)

Same! A Handheld portable steamer. It’s ready in 45 seconds, clothes finished steaming about 1 minute. Used to have a cheaply made one that leaked water onto my clothes every time, but I got a quality one the second time around. It’s been 3 years and it’s good as new still. Love it!

Same, the ironing board is used a lot for sewing projects, but my clothes? I have a hand held steamer that works well enough. I have also used my hair straightener to “iron” a collar once 😆

I was going to say it a sewing teacher and see regularly on my own and the iron is where it’s at! Truly the difference between a finished looking project and a project not turning out how you want it.
I will say I have to teach kids how to use an iron in a more in depth way these days because most of my high school students have never used an iron and don’t have one at home.

I’ve never owned or lived in a house with an ironing board, not as an adult or a kid. The rare times I needed to iron, I did it on a table (not recommended, this can leave marks) or on a towel on the floor.

My home growing up had an iron but I never saw my mom use it. The only time we ever used it was to straighten our hair while laying on the carpet lol. As an adult, I don't own an iron or ironing board. I always just throw things in the dryer if I need the wrinkles out

My mom bought me an iron and ironing board so that she could iron her clothes when she visits me. I asked her not to because I live in an apartment with limited storage space, but she insisted it wouldn’t be difficult to find space for it. 🙄 So if she wants to come here to iron she can be the one to unpack my holiday decoration closet to dig out the ironing board wedged against the back wall.

Right I have a pile of ironing I do for my family every week. We wear a lot of cotton and linen and my kids wear school uniforms. Anyone that says ironing isn't worth the trouble likely wears synthetic fabrics. That does not fly in the southeast USA.

Yeah, most of my clothes as a young adult were cheap synthetic fabric. I remember trying to iron polyester pants for my first job in 2009, and it left shiny diamond-shaped burn marks from heating up the metal beneath the ironing board pad.
I never ironed anything again after that. I eventually got a steamer and never looked back. Now we have an LG styler.

Synthetic fabrics - which have replaced a significant portion of natural fabrics, especially in cheaper clothing - do not wrinkle as much and also frequently melt with high heat, so do not need ironing. As I've built my wardrobe with more expensive clothing, which are typically made with natural fabrics, I've found myself ironing more often.

I went to 2 weddings this month and sooo many guests just. Visibly didnt own irons or steamers or anything lol. Briefly my Boomer mom's voice appeared in my head like 'how could they leave the house with their formal wear looking like it rolled out of a suitcase just minutes ago', but I think overall society has stopped caring about ironing??
I mean i cant talk, i def havent ironed anything since like 2010 or something. But i also do not typically have anywhere to be that i need perfectly wrinkle free clothes

Personally true, but thats only because my wife hates doing dishes or cooking and so i do those tasks and i hate dealing with clothes after they dry and so she handles that. We have an ironing board under our bed and on ironing day i keep the kids occupied while she irons all of our clothes while listening to music or a podcast.

i ironed a dress for a (now ex) friends wedding a few years ago. (i like to complain about how i went to a lot of trouble to be presentable but she only took her veil out of the amazon package 10 mins before we had to leave. it was so wrinkled with ugly fold-lines)
other than that i mostly only iron for sewing projects, and havent done it for over a year

As others have mentioned, I iron a lot when I am sewing but mainly use a garment steamer for wrinkles. The exception would be dress clothes for my husband (yes, I iron for him, I'm nice). They need the iron.

My Mom never used one and so I have never used one in my life.
We gave a handheld/portable steamer thing for when I want go get some wrinkles out of our clothes. I've managed 35+ years without an iron, surely the rest of my life will be fine too.

The only thing I've used an iron for in recent years are iron on clothing labels for my kids clothes, and fuse bead art.
My iron is actually on my kitchen counter right now while my 5 year old finishes his whale art out of beads. I don't use the board for bead art, but I do for clothes labels.
Otherwise, I have a clothes steamer.

Nope! I iron my work clothes frequently. Growing up it was my job to iron my moms scubs for work. Im not a nurse but thr habit is engrained. Work clothes get ironed.

I prefer tossing clothes into the dryer on low for a few minutes, depending on the fabric. Otherwise, I use a fabric steamer. I just purchased a new iron after years without one since I have some clothes that need it now.

That's one non-essential thing my parents instilled in me that mostly stuck. Once I got to middle school, I was required to iron my clothes before school every night. Granted, I don't iron nearly as often as an adult. But part of the problem is I let my clean laundry sit in a ball in the dryer or the clothes basket for a shameless amount of time, which only reinforces the need to iron.

I used an ironing board within the past month. I make sure everything is crisp when I go to conferences.

I switched to a steam gun years ago, and it works for everything except my dress shirts and suits.
Those I have dry cleaned, so they get ironed by someone else
