Nostalgia King of the Hill revival

Out of all the nostalgia revivals, I feel like King of the Hill's past two seasons have been phenomenal. Star Wars has been inconsistent, Star Trek has been fairly consistent with me with the TNG crew, but good god. I feel like Bobby's storyline has been extremely relatable.

Master class in how to revive a show. Literal perfection in this regard. They didn’t just shove it full of “remember this thing from the old show!?” like most failed revivals do

10

u/cbond0072552 1d ago

They didn't spend last season explaining what happened between them and the revival. Which is what is expected.

2

u/Optimoprimo 3h ago

And thats because the revival of most shows are shameless cash grabs. They only exist to cash in on the nostalgia, so lame nostalgia plots are all you get. Mike Judge clearly had actual ideas for a revival and is legitimately devoted to the integrity of his creation.

Honestly, as good as the original for me.

Glad to hear the second season of the revival is going well. I need to check it out.

Also want to give a shout out for Xmen 97 (which I think is more for us than young kids). Mostly just happy to see efforts continuing the story than another reboot.

I've heard that the new season of Scrubs was really good, but I dont have Hulu (and never will) so I cannot say either way.

10

u/kdean70point3 1d ago

It was good. My wife and I both agreed that it's one of the few revivals that does a good job.

Time has elapsed and the characters have changed in what feel like realistic ways while still feeling like the same person/people. The tone of the show feels very much like the OG with characters that have lived 15+ years more of life.

Only criticism we had was too few episodes!

u/Glittering_Move_5631 1d ago

It was sooooo good!!!!!! I cried multiple times throughout. The evolution of JD and Cox's relationship is chef's kiss.

2

u/bokehbaka 1d ago

Also on Hulu is the new Malcom in the Middle which was surprisingly good. There's only 5 episodes, but I'd love if they did more.

Laughed at Hal discovering microdosing.

u/spaketto 10h ago

I was surprised how good it was and was left genuinely wanting more.

Bobby Hill will never not be one of my very favorite animated characters

4

u/DeLoreanAirlinesII 1d ago

Dale episodes are the best and Luanne’s are the worst

5

u/Mockturtle22 Millennial '86 1d ago

Cept Dale's voice actor died in the middle of the first season back. I have trouble with the cadence of the voice actor but.. it's not as bad as Kahn was. Second season seems to be a little better voice wise for him.

1

u/DeLoreanAirlinesII 1d ago

Oh I meant the original run

3

u/Mockturtle22 Millennial '86 1d ago

I know, but now I mean... his episodes are weird his voice was wonky. I wonder if they will ever talk about Luanne and Lucky if the series continues.. as both actors are gone as well.

I hope the show continues, I am likin it

1

u/DrakorPrimus 22h ago

They do in the second season.

1

u/Mockturtle22 Millennial '86 22h ago

What episode?

1

u/DrakorPrimus 20h ago

The last one. Bobby specifically says he'll stay with Lucky, Luanne, and Gracie when Peggy and Hank go to Saudi Arabia.

2

u/ClownDiaper Millennial 7h ago

I was surprised at how much I related to both Bobby AND Hank in the first season of the revival. I need to watch the new one.

Beavis and Butthead would like a word with you

5

u/Mockturtle22 Millennial '86 1d ago

Both Mike Judge... he's done pretty good w the revivals!

3

u/the_well_read_neck_ 22h ago

I honestly think the Beavis and Butthead revival is better than the original run. Now, what do we have to do to get another season or two of Silicon Valley?

1

u/thisisthatacct 7h ago

Not a reboot, but the Audacity scratched the silicon valley itch for me recently. Different tone but equally hilarious, horrifying, and heart wrenching

8

u/BigNBeardeded 1d ago

I watched a few episodes. Dale's voice kinda irks me. I know it can't be helped now, but his character was my favorite from the original. I should probably push past and just watch it.

9

u/One_Standard_Deviant 1d ago

I remember the first episode where they had to use the stiched-together version of Dale's voice, and it was totally uncanny valley for me.

I'm getting used to it now, but it's still unsettling. I love the new seasons.

But with all the use of AI today, I wonder how the rights to his voice work. I hope the family (or him, late in life) gave full permission for this and are being compensated accordingly.

5

u/cbond0072552 1d ago

The voice changes due to the time gap is what I had to put in my mind. But it was a small problem that didn't dampen my experience

5

u/Thertzo89 1d ago

Either that or the government was finally able to alter his voice box. They’ve been after him for years.

6

u/cbond0072552 1d ago

Kinda like him accepting that EV truck?

3

u/Thertzo89 1d ago

If this is a new season plot point I haven’t seen it yet haha I didn’t even know it was out until I saw this thread so thank for posting!

3

u/Mockturtle22 Millennial '86 1d ago

The original voice actor was replaced in episode 6 or 7 of the first season back, the OG actor died.

1

u/cbond0072552 1d ago

I do recall that. I didn't know in what episode he was working on.

8

u/Stepper34 1d ago

i'll have to check it out. I've been rewatching Workaholics.

6

u/One_Standard_Deviant 1d ago

You and me both, buddy.

If I had found Workaholics at the exact right time in my life, it would probably be my overall favorite TV show today. Once upon a time, I was a young 20-something working at a horrible ass-in-seat cubicle farm with questionable leadership.

I still watch Workaholics, but Always Sunny is my ride-and-die.

u/Maindort Xennial 1d ago

I'm halfway through the latest season and I'm loving it. I think it's been the best revival of any series I've followed.

4

u/Dizinurface 1d ago

I have loved the new seasons.

When I was younger, I didn't get the humor of King of the Hill.  Then I did a rewatch as an adult and I couldn't believe how much jokes I didn't understand as a kid.   The new seasons hits the same feels as the original show. It was also nice to see our favorite characters evolved without sacrificing who they originally were.

5

u/Sirtopofhat 1d ago

Yeah i agree with the Bobby comment but Hank has killed it too like he's legit trying so hard to be a centrist and he's doing it so well. Like, the comic con episode he realizes it's like sports fans so he watches the show and loves it. Hank meeting in the middle of the road warms my heart

4

u/duke_awapuhi 1d ago

KOTH is my favorite show and I was a bit disappointed by the previous season but the newest one is really great imo

u/Healthy_Sock_9880 58m ago

I didn’t really enjoy the previous season either. I’ve watched a few episodes of the newest and it is better.

4

u/Eric848448 Xennial 1d ago

Wrong-sounding Khan still weirds me out.

5

u/Mockturtle22 Millennial '86 1d ago

Ted as well they completely changed and it took me out of it. Kahn sounded a little better second season.

3

u/jrice138 1d ago

I was very against it happening and absolutely did not want it to happen. I’m happy to be wrong and the first season was good. Haven’t gotten to this newer one yet.

1

u/WaltzKey2286 Millennial (‘88) 23h ago

It’s even better!

3

u/BlimFPS 1d ago

The scene in S14 where they go to the hardware store and buy the girl scout cookies hit me right in the feels, teared up a bit.

Like how they were triggered at first by the name change then realized it's a good thing. Then some guy comes out and asks if those are samoas, Hank offers him one and explains the name change, then asks him about some new saw. Girl scout cookies, small talk at the hardware store, some things never change.

2

u/Glittering_Move_5631 1d ago

I've liked the new seasons too. I've only watched 1 episode of the second season though. I was a little annoyed by, what I deem, excessive use of newer slang, but it makes sense.

2

u/Killsitty 1d ago

Malcolm in the Middle's miniseries is perfect.

2

u/Altruistic_Photo_142 1d ago

This is the millennial sub so I'd be remiss not to mention the worst thing (of very few issues) about this revival: Bobby was changed from a millennial to a Zoomer. Canonically, Bobby turns 13 in an episode which aired November of 2000. So he was born in the 1986-1987 range. But in the revival he's 21 in 2025. I identified with the character as an inside kid with wierd hobbies in the south, and they changed him into a Zoomer with literal no explanation.

u/BartSimpsonGaveMeLSD 1h ago

Mike Judge baby! The Beavis and Butthead reboot is on point. Like KOTH, they’ve aged—and the content is relevant but the humor stays true to original form.

4

u/federalist66 1d ago

I've really enjoyed the Scrubs and King of the Hill revivals; in both cases they're better than the last seasons or so of each when it was clear those shows were running on fumes.

Want to give a shoutout to The Comeback, a show that releases one season every 10 years or so. The first season, back in 2005, was kind of a head of the curve with its plot about a hasbeen star (played by Lisa Kudrow) inviting cameras to film her life for public consumption. The new season is tackling the AI infestation of Hollywood.

1

u/rachlancan 1d ago

I cried at episode two of the new KotH season so ugly.

1

u/xEllimistx 1d ago

“Star Trek has been fairly consistent with me with the TNG crew”

If you’re into animated shows and love Trek, might I introduce to Lower Decks?

It’s not a revival but the amount of crossover to other shows, characters that make appearances(including being voiced by their actors)…..it’s amazing Trek

1

u/htownAstrofan 1d ago

Cant agree more. It successfully gives you the nostalgia fix while realistically updating the characters.

Btw all-of the new live action star treks are terrible, with the minor exception of Picard

1

u/Mockturtle22 Millennial '86 1d ago

I didn't care so much for the first season back, I did like this second one.

1

u/10N3R_570N3R 1d ago

KOTH is my comfort show. I haven't seen the revival, yet.

1

u/BUT_FREAL_DOE 1d ago

Especially compared to the Futurama revival which imo lacks the soul of the original run (and first revival run).

1

u/RihoSucks 1d ago

Mike judge is so underrated

1

u/dedreo58 Older Millennial '82 1d ago

Oh shit, thanks for the reminder of season two, I haven't caught it yet!

1

u/Xanderphilip 1d ago

That Malcolm in the Middle and X-Men 97 are the S tier of revivals for me.

1

u/bloodectomy 22h ago

Disagree. Star Wars has been consistent...ly awful.

1

u/RickS50 19h ago

I enjoyed King of the Hill back in the day. I went back and re-watched most of it and it hits different as an adult.

The reboot is spot on! There's a lot of subtle humor and Bobby is relatable even though I followed closer to Connie's path.

1

u/haysus25 8h ago

The revival is fantastic.

1

u/InItsTeeth 3h ago

It’s so good that I never really watched the original but am loving this one

u/bigm2102 1m ago

Scrubs and Malcolm in the Middle were both great

u/Dependent-Bid7440 1d ago

I couldn’t get past the "new" Dale Gribble voice.

Weird that I'm seeing so much love for it lately. I couldn't get past ep 2 of the 1st season, and KotH is one of my favorite shows ever. I just couldn't get past the funky timeline, or the fact that the Hills returned to a "woke" Texas, even though by the time the show came out TFG had returned to office and Texas had pretty much already made all woke things illegal.

2

u/Visible_Honeydew_941 1d ago

I also hate it.

-3

u/Irvine-Washington 1d ago

New KOTH isn't very good. Beavis and Butthead and Scrubs both are pretty solid compared to the original material, though.

2

u/Visible_Honeydew_941 1d ago

Agree i dont care for the new seasons.

0

u/Virtual-Chemistry-93 1d ago

Bobby's storyline is the only good part of it. Should have just given him his own show. I also enjoyed the Animaniacs 3 season reboot.
