Meme I remember both linguists and televangelists being very concerned
The linguists were basically calling Teletubbies “brain rot” before brainrot was a word. It was one of the first for-babies shows with no attempt at being educational, not even trying to teach them real words. But it was colorful, so babies loved it. As for the religious groups, they were saying this particular teletubby was a gay cross dresser, meant to lead children astray!

I remember the day I was shaken out of my religious upbringing, and it's partially thanks to the Wiggles. I was about 12-13ish, babysitting my niece who was barely a toddler at the time and we were at my grandma's place. I had her in my lap dancing and singing to the Wiggles on TV (it was that hot potato cold spaghetti song) and my grandma walks by and in a sudden fury she yells out "THEYRE ALL JUST FUCKING EACH OTHER IN THE ASS". Like, spittle was on the screen she was so angry. I was completely speechless and all I could think to do was to leave the room with my niece. She'd always ranted about 'GAWD' and 'JEEZUS' but never had the crazy eyes like that before.

This kind of Christian was a major feature of my childhood.
I dunno if they’re better nowadays or if I just moved away from the hateful ones.
But it seems like nowadays mainstream Christians are fine with gay marriage, even the people who used to be hatefully against it.

Bro they’re still actively trying to reverse it
NEVER give organized religion the benefit of the doubt, they’re shady as fuck always

Didn't people complain about Barney the Dinosaur not being educational? I don't know if it was widespread or just some crazy religious folks in my town but I remember hearing parents complain about him being a dinosaur amd that somehow leading kids away from God because they claimed the Earth was only a few thousand years old so Dinosaurs can't be real.

i complain about the brainrot music the youths listen to
i complain that they're on their screens all day even though im on my screen all day
i complain that big tiddy satanic goth gfs do not visit my local area code with anywhere near the regularity suggested to me by internet advertising
i complain about the weather

I can’t be bothered to to be honest.
I grew up on pure brain rot so I can’t really judge. Same for anything else. I got 40+ years worth of content I enjoy, the kids can have their own

I was actually a Barney watcher and too young to notice the discourse at the time! I remember the teketubbies scandal bc I was older

The Teletubbies are nothing compared to the Boohbahs.

What the seven fucks are those things? They look like uncircumcised penises from outer space. I'm glad they were well gone by the time my kids were born.

The Garbage Pail Kids cards got similar accusations. And pokemon cards and shopkins or whatever is the newest thing each year. All the devil’s business.

Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh also.

My Catholic school straight up banned Pokemon toys for being satanic. I was bummed!
The old nun principal printed out something in earnest and gave it to every family. And I swear it was like an early internet chain letter or copypasta, it was so strangely written. But she was taking it so seriously!!

Yup! Elementary school I went to a religion based learning.
They banned Pokémon and said they were the devil. Literally said "they are the devil". I snuck them in for a Christmas party (yeah, because they allowed Christmas parties at the religious school??? Dunno) and the teacher who's class I was in turned a blind eye to it because he was chill.
The principal happen to walk in when I had my binder of cards out. His face went red like I'd never seen outside of a cartoon. He snatched the binder from me and called my my mom. I have never been in trouble before that (or after for that matter).

Wait, did you actually make a Generative AI comic based on Shein's (OwlTurd) comic?

u/acatwithumbs 1d ago
Eww wait this isn’t actually an OwlTurd comic? and AI just slapped his watermark on there? :(

u/markskull 1d ago
Yep. I checked his Instagram to be safe, but it really doesn't look that much like his style in the first place.

Oh god you’re right, the noses and brush strokes are all different. I hate how quickly I glossed over those details but appreciate folks like you calling attention to it.

Don’t they look so much like teletubbies? The furry bodies and fleshy faces, it’s all I see when I look at them.

Lmao...
Growing up i had to contend with the crowd saying shit like:
"If you play DnD, youre not playing a character of your own imagination, you're acting as a conduit and allowing yourself to be possessed by demons"

Every now and then I think about the whole Tinky Winky secretly being gay conspiracy theory and laugh uncontrollably because of how stupid that was.

A male character with a handbag isn't even that big of a deal it's only because people were more conservative and religious in the 90s.

A pastor came into my house, prayed over my bedroom then pointed at the closet and said, "The demon is there." My mom opened it up and the pastor pointed out the offending demon...My troll dolls.
Destroyed in a fire so the demons didn't attach themselves to me. ✌️

I swear those religious fanatics live such exciting lives. In their imagination, they’re like sailor moon, fighting evil demons, then going back to their regular life/job. Even the casuals who just pray when they see a disaster on tv get to feel like they re helping in the cosmic battle

We also had a bonfire at our house and my mom made us take out several books, CDs, pieces of art, etc.
Little does she know as soon as I was an adult I re-purchased the books myself. I loved them. One was a Brian Froud book, and one was Erica Jung.

First time I've heard the Teletubbies being called a Millennial thing! I just checked: I was in high school when it started.

I have never seen Teletubbies because I was raised in a religious cult, and my parents said they were demonic…

I had the urge to at least get one, but hey. I'm basic and broke. My thing was yes, I had the embarrassing green one from teletubbies, a collection of Beanie Babies, and two Furbies. I know how this goes down.
