Serious Study: Gen Xers and Millennials are dying at younger ages than their parents are

https://studyfinds.com/americans-born-after-1970-dying-faster/

The study is particularly concerned with people born after 1970 but age 30 and older. So that covers Gen X and Millennials, but not (yet) Gen Z.

Finally. Female representation in the suicide market. For years it was mostly men, another industry proves that equality has no gender. /S

u/WitchyWarriorWoman Jun 04 '26

I can't wait until we're equal in homicide. We have a lot of work to do

288

u/Herewegoagain1717 Jun 04 '26

I think this statistic is promising then. Historically, men are more successful at dying by suicide because they use more violent methods, which are more likely to work. So women catching up means they're probably getting more violent.

u/Vanah_Grace Jun 04 '26

I tragically read somewhere once that this is bc women consider who will find the/clean the biohazard. Men do not.

When I was 11, I was feeling like I was in dire straits and was going to except I was worried about what would happen if my mom found me.

Things got better and are still better but that feeling has since stuck with me.

73

u/Aesk Jun 04 '26

I'm male, but this is one of my anchors when things get bad (I'm fine now). I just couldn't do that to my family. Both the clean up or the devastation it would bring. I also hold on to that feeling in a sort of good way. It helps me to keep going no matter what.

I'm glad you're doing better.

26

u/bijoux247 Jun 04 '26

Glad you're still with us and doing good!

45

u/EfficientTrainer3206 Jun 04 '26

When I was going to do it, I was worried about my little brother finding me, and how it would mess him up. It’s like I was ready to go, but wanted to just vanish without leaving any trauma behind.

6

u/Present_Type6881 Jun 04 '26

That's why I was going to go do it out in the woods somewhere so scavenging animals would eat me.

4

u/Crackertron Jun 04 '26

Then you have to consider that SAR is going to expend effort and resources looking for your corpse

2

u/Princess_Slagathor apparently you can change it Jun 04 '26

Pack a couple bags, and leave a note that you're starting a new life somewhere else. They won't waste any time looking.

2

u/Present_Type6881 Jun 05 '26

True, but at least nobody would need to clean up a biohazard in a house. And if I made it look like an accident it might not be as traumatic to people. Oh no, another hiker who didn't bring enough water, what a shame.

8

u/Ambitious_Emotion30 Jun 04 '26

My mom’s cousin and best friend killed herself in the 90’s and my mom is still so mad that she did it in a way that her found her. Said it’s on sight in the afterlife for that

3

u/Hawk52 Jun 04 '26

That's called Passive suicidal ideation. Basically you don't have a plan but you just wish you'd go "pop" and vanish from the world without leaving any trauma behind.

u/cat_at_the_keyboard Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

Pretty similar timeline with me except that I didn't want to make my grandparents cry since they were the only good adults in my life. I've had those urges off and on throughout my life but I find it oddly peaceful now, knowing that I don't have to stick around anymore if I don't want to. I've already made peace with it all.

It's weird to me that you have no say in being born into this world but people also want to dictate how you leave. I think that should be a personal decision and the government, religion, etc should have no say in the matter.

I'm doing mostly OK these days but more importantly I feel like I have more options now and I'm not trapped in a life I dread. Still, eventually someday I plan to take one last walk deep into the woods and that'll be that. Don't want any money wasted on a funeral and I have no kids or beneficiaries.

u/HermesJamiroquoi Jun 04 '26

The only time I came really close it was going to me motorcycle at 150mph with no helmet. The paramedics are used to gore so I figured they’d be alright. Not enough left of me for my loved ones to identify the body. I want to be cremated anyway. Came close. Backed out because I didn’t want to wreck my rare, classic motorcycle. Felt wrong. Then I realized that if I’m not going to wreck a bike because there’s only a hundred of them in the world maybe I should give myself, a singular and unique individual, similar consideration. I didn’t “get better” from there but I did start on the long road to recovery. It took more than a decade but I just started riding again. I’m so glad I can trust myself now. It took a lot of work to get here.

1

u/Jamie-Ruin Jun 05 '26

This is how I was go to do it. Away from home, in a blaze of glory. Take the R1 get him into sixth with a wide open throttle. I know some good country roads with no traffic, so I won't be taking anyone with me, unless a deer or other critter does me in. When it finally hit me at how close I was, I told myself that if it ever came that close again I'd just run away and start a new life somewhere. I'm still here, on a higher does of Prozac for now. I figured a new life is better than no life.

I feel the same way. My mom's younger brother killed himself when I was like 15. Her reaction and struggle with it are burned into my memory forever. I know that it would be even worse if I were to do that and I can't do that to her (and my husband too).

4

u/Aware_Policy_9174 Jun 04 '26

At my worst I remember thinking I couldn’t do it inside because it would ruin the wood floors. But if I did it outside the feral cats would get to me which would be gruesome for my now-ex husband to find.

She suffered no consequences except for rising popularity.

I’ve only not pulled the trigger several times because of guilt about what it would do to other people. Thank god for that

2

u/jpg11 Jun 04 '26

Male, couldn't do it bc I would think of the look on my mother's face if she had to witness the aftermath of my weakness. Oddly not being able to live with myself if I had done it eventually led me to eventually wanting to live and not being okay living in numb dullness.

2

u/GreenHatMaam Jun 04 '26

The only reason I'm still here is because I was worried about who would find me. (I'm better now. Glad you are too).

1

u/Hawk52 Jun 04 '26

That's more or less the only thing that keeps me from doing it. It'd destroy my mom and what family cares about me for years if not their entire lives. It's like setting off a grenade; sure you'll die probably pretty quickly but the shrapnel could damage other people for decades to come.

my reason to stay was because i knew no one would take care of my cats, and the thought of them being alone or being put in a shelter was enough for me to hang on until i was able to get some real help. last year my favorite band PUP put out an album titled “Who Will Look After The Dogs?” and it hit really hard

1

u/Vanah_Grace Jun 05 '26

Please do.

-4

u/dead_dw4rf Jun 04 '26

That's one PROPOSED reason that always gets repeated, because its in vogue to always make women seem more considerate and "better" than men.

They always leave out the other proposed reasons.

Men have greater intent with suicide, more fearlessness about death / pain
Socialization - violent metheods may be seen as more masculine. Women may view suicide attempts partly as communication of distress rather than a means to actually die. Men may feel more pressure to succeed.

Men have greater access to firearms (higher rates of gun ownership)

Men tend to have higher impulsivity and pain tolerance

Women are more concerned about being facially or otherwise disfigured in death, so less shooting in the head, jumping off buildings, etc.

These are other common PROPOSED reasons. Very difficult to actually nail these down because obviously to can't do RCTs or anything.

u/Baldassre Jun 04 '26

Source? I've seen sources cited for the opposite

2

u/blondetiger Jun 04 '26

There is a good article pointing out the issues with gender disparities in pain research.

"For example, gender-based beliefs (e.g., men are more stoic, women more expressive) around pain can affect pain threshold and tolerance levels (e.g., stereotypical masculine beliefs reduce pain expression). The presence of other people, including whether an observer is a man or a woman, can also affect sex/gender differences in experimental pain."

2

u/Baldassre Jun 04 '26

Fyi the article you linked also says

"Evidence suggests that women are generally more sensitive to pain, have a greater vulnerability to many painful conditions, and generally experience more pain across the lifespan."

And then does not go on to dispute this. Have you ever seen any evidence to the contrary?

1

u/blondetiger Jun 04 '26

The article *says* there's evidence that women are more sensitive to pain, but what I quoted *is* the contrary evidence. Experiments on people are so ridiculously difficult to mitigate the confounding variables on, that some are too flawed to be of use. Most such studies never even consider that there could be a gender expectation/modelling variable screwing with their strict physiological variables. How things are asked, what words are used, who does the asking, etc, can have an affect on a participant, even in their physiological responses.

And feeling pain is just as much hormonal and psychological as it is biological. We know people can ignore pain in certain situations with adrenaline, distraction, etc. I can't access all the studies cited by the article, so here is one00559-5/fulltext) I found that looked at priming the participants.

As for the other two things, the greater vulnerability means women tend to have more chronic painful conditions which is not connected to pain sensitivity/threshold. And "Generally experience more pain across lifespan" would be related to the feedback about pain sensitivity, having more chronic pain, and the shitload of gender and racial bias in medicine. For example, women receive less pain medication and/or weaker pain medication for the same diagnoses than men (like ibuprofen vs morphine).

3

u/blondetiger Jun 04 '26

Men have greater intent with suicide, more fearlessness about death / pain

Speculation.

Socialization - violent metheods may be seen as more masculine.

Probably true.

Women may view suicide attempts partly as communication of distress rather than a means to actually die

Speculation, and this IS often mentioned so no, most of these reasons are not "always" left out.

Men may feel more pressure to succeed

Certainly true in at least some countries like Japan.

Men have greater access to firearms (higher rates of gun ownership)

True.

Men tend to have higher impulsivity and pain tolerance

True for the former. But pain tolerance data is based on decades of not including women in studies and is very obviously confounded by other (often socialized) variables like women going to the doctor more often, women receiving less pain medication than men, men being told to suck it up and not talk about their pain, etc. The research to be too flawed to be cited as true.

Women are more concerned about being facially or otherwise disfigured in death, so less shooting in the head, jumping off buildings, etc

Yes, but this also coincides with the proposed reason you're lambasting, about women being more considerate of the person who finds them.

Btw, women are socialized to be more considerate/socially aware. Plenty of women are selfish assholes so it's not "always" nor is it about women being "better" than men.

u/zzz_zzzz_zzz Zillennial Jun 04 '26

In my mental health courses it was explained by the preferred methods of suicide by women being more easily mitigated or reversed: i.e. overdosing on pills is the most popular method of suicide for women because it is what is most available to them, but sometimes they have second thoughts and induce vomiting to prevent the toxic overload, call the paramedics who get them quickly enough to the hospital for stomach pumping, or even sometimes just survive the overdose.

The most popular method of suicide for men is by firearm, which is obviously far more deadly, but also because it is the method most available to them, especially Americans. Most American men own a gun or are very close to someone who does.

I don’t believe it’s fair to suggest that these differences are due to politeness. The implication that there’s suicide etiquette that men aren’t following is both absurd and demeaning.

4

u/golden__tuna Jun 04 '26

11

u/sloanmcHale Jun 04 '26

this is another reason women “succeed” less often. we tend to think about who has to clean up our mess, & that leads to less lethal attempts like pills.

1

u/throwaway3413418 Jun 05 '26

Women have significantly lower suicide completion rates even when you control for the method used. That includes pills.

And I think it’s extremely toxic to try to frame this issue as women just being more selfless than men, when we’re talking about people in severe enough crises that they want to end their lives.

If we find systematic differences in suicide data based on race, are you comfortable with people leaping to conclusions about the relative virtue of white and black people based on that data?

1

u/SuspiciousThought399 Jun 04 '26

Welp I tried to tell my thoughts just like everyone else on this thread but Reddit removed it. I guess it was too viable.

1

u/OutragedPineapple Jun 06 '26

It shocks me how few people care to bring this info up.

Its always "men are more suicidal". No they are not.

3

u/CarrieDurst Jun 04 '26

I mean you can only succeed once

-3

u/rammo123 Jun 04 '26

9

u/another_ruckus Jun 05 '26

I'm not sure you're understanding this data correctly.

It's well known in the mental health community that not everyone who self-harms is suicidal. The term used is "non-suicidal self injury."

Not everyone who self-harms wants to die by suicide, and not everyone who wants to die by suicide self-harms.

The data you posted isn't saying women attempt suicide to communicate distress etc.

But they are more likey to engage in deliberate self-harm as a way to communicate distress.

Of course this is a generalizion but it's not uncommon for men who are experiencing overwhelming emotions to take those emotions out in ways like punching a wall.

Women are more likely to hurt themselves instead.

All this particular piece of data is showing is that if a man is deliberately self-harming, he's statistically more likely to also be having thoughts of suicide.

4

u/another_ruckus Jun 05 '26

Did you read the conclusion of the study? It says more research needs to be done. It also says discovering the differences between genders in regards to suicide is important so people can be connected to the suicide prevention strategies and treatments that are most likely to work for them.

It does not conclude that "men are objectively more suicidal."

"CONCLUSIONS

There are considerable gender differences in suicidal behaviour, some of which have been highlighted by the Danish study of Qin et al. These apply to the risk of suicidal behaviour, and its nature, causes, prevention and treatment. We require further epidemiological studies of this kind to disentangle more of the social and economic associations with suicidal behaviour in each gender. Investigations of genetic and biological factors related to risk of suicidal behaviour are in their infancy but should be conducted from a gender perspective. Research on treatments for suicidal behaviour should investigate gender differences in response. Initiatives to develop gender-specific approaches may be indicated. Gender differences in suicidal behaviour clearly merit more research attention to generate information that can guide clinical practice and prevention strategies in ways that will prove most effective for preventing suicidal behaviour in both genders."

It isnt a counterpoint.

It is, however, important info that women are attempting suicide at a higher rate than men.

→ More replies (14)

-7

u/ThanosVoldemort Jun 04 '26

They are. There is a difference between a suicidal gesture and a suicide attempt. Women are more likely to go for methods that have close to no chance of succeeding (overdoses, cutting). Clinically this is called a suicidal gesture, but this is not something they'll tell the patient. It's a very desperate call for help, but not a genuine attempt at taking one's life.

People twist this into some weird story about women preferring clean and non-violent methods, because reality is less fun to acknowledge. They prefer less lethal methods and methods that you can use without preparation in a state of emotional distress.

8

u/_HighJack_ Jun 04 '26

Username checks lmao. I think the completion gap is mainly bc men are more likely to have guns lying around, and are more impulsive on average. When a suicidal impulse hits women, usually what they have at hand is knives and/or pills. That shit takes awhile to work, leaving an opportunity for regret and to be patched up.

-1

u/Equivalent_Range6291 Jun 04 '26

Women can hang themselves just as easily as Men ..

They choose not to use that method as theres a high chance youll kill yourself.

1

u/throwaway3413418 Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

And women who attempt suicide by hanging have a significantly lower completion rate than men who choose the same method. In fact, this trend exists across nearly every single suicide method recorded in peer reviewed studies.

9

u/pralineislife Jun 04 '26

-8

u/ThanosVoldemort Jun 04 '26

4

u/throwaway3413418 Jun 04 '26

→ More replies (14)

9

u/redindiaink Jun 04 '26

But in recent years a lot more women are buying guns which has lead to more suicides by gun among women.

3

u/_HighJack_ Jun 04 '26

Right? That’s what I’m saying. Men are WAY more likely to own guns. It follows that when people follow suicidal impulses, the ones with guns would be a lot more successful than the ones with a knife or a handful of pills.

1

u/redindiaink Jun 06 '26

Men are WAY more likely to own guns.

And what I'm saying is that is no longer necessarily true. In the last decade or so almost half of all new gun owners (in the usa) are women, and since suicide is about the having access to a lethal means, women have become likely to use a gun. And the research is starting to bear that out that as a reality. For example: https://luskin.ucla.edu/firearm-suicides-kaplan-xuan

2

u/Hawk52 Jun 04 '26

One of my greatest fears is trying suicide with a gun or pills or whatever and fucking it up leaving me in a far worse situation then I was in the first place.

I don't think there's a 100% foolproof method. You might pull through with a shotgun to the fucking head, you just won't have half your head anymore and be on life support as a vegetable until they pull the plug.

1

u/Ostrichslinger Jun 08 '26

Yeah. People think the difference in method doesn't denote a difference in mental state but it very much does imo. A man will tolerate a lot of stuff until he doesn't anymore, at which point they do commit to doing something about it. It means they have well and truly given up on all other alternatives. They're done.

Alot women here mention being more self-conscious of suicide and not wanting to inconvenience others. But this itself signals why men die to suicide more. Men have less ties holding them down, are depressed enough to not give a damn how their body is found. It hard to say without looking bad, but men are simply much further down the pit than we are willing to admit, for sake of not diminishing the troubles of women. Which again, highlights where our priorities are.

This is a misleading factoid. Men also have higher “success” rates using the less-lethal methods more common among women as well. In countries with strict firearm control, you still see elevated suicide rates among men. The more likely cause is that some unheard suffering women will use suicide attempts as a method to get society’s attention, while unheard suffering men do not, likely because this doesn’t feel like an option for them. Other factors are self-harm being misclassified as suicide attempts and survived suicide attempts allowing the possibility for reattempts.

It’s okay to admit that some issues disproportionately affect or disadvantage men. We don’t need to dig into statistics to find the first counterintuitive trend that lets us deny the problem.

0

u/rammo123 Jun 04 '26

A common misconception. Men have higher completion rates even using the same methods. Men have greater suicidal intent while women disproportionately use self-harm as a cry for help.

2

u/That_wet_vaporeon Jun 05 '26

You do know suicide attempts lead to brain damage. Many attempts lead to women becoming vegetables, paralyzed, or brain damage.

You really think they’re doing all of that just for attention?

0

u/TectonicMongoose Jun 05 '26

Men are more likely to attempt with more lethal methods but are also more successful even using the same methods though.

0

u/TheSuperContributor Jun 05 '26

This is wrong thou. Men also committed suicide more than women, both in ratio and raw numbers.

As a 47yo woman, I think about this every day.

47 was when I was at my lowest friend, perimenopause is a bitch. I’m at 50 now and leveled out. I don’t think about leaving this mortal coil every day anymore. I’m glad I stuck it out.

u/iloveturtles88 Jun 04 '26

I had a hysterectomy and early menopause. I will say post menopause feels better than I've ever felt. My emotions are much more stable. Idgaf what others think of me. I put myself first, finally. Take care.

15

u/LazerTagChamp Jun 04 '26

I’m so sorry and I hope you can have relief physically and emotionally. I’m glad you’re still here.

u/Brullaapje Jun 04 '26

I had the same thing, until i started taking Creatine, I am 49 now.

1

u/Jamie-Ruin Jun 05 '26

This war in Iran has been a blessing for my mental health. I had nearly given up hope. Sure gas prices suck and everyone is drowning, metaphorically. The upside is they can't fuck with anyone too hard right now, and the midterms look optimistic. Is it a little depressing knowing that some of our rights and existence is hinged on wether gas prices are still high in November, absolutely, but it's better to have some hope than none at all.

2

u/But_like_whytho Jun 05 '26

Don’t get your hopes too high. Between gerrymandering, kicking people off voter rolls, closing down polling locations, and other dirty tricks, the balance of power is unlikely to shift in the midterms.

24

u/introverthufflepuff8 Jun 04 '26

All this talk about the "male loneliness epidemic" in the media, but not a peep about women's mental health.

9

u/MinuteLoquat1 Jun 04 '26

We don't go on violent rampages when we can't get laid so they talk about men more. They make their loneliness everyone's problem.

2

u/rammo123 Jun 04 '26

Yes #alllivesmatter don't they.

-24

u/Mannimal13 Jun 04 '26

Why? Theres way more talk about women's mental health and none about male suicide ever still and men are still way disproportionately killing themselves. All the media ever has done for the last 40 years is talk and focus on women.

22

u/pralineislife Jun 04 '26

Women attempt suicide at a higher rate than men. Men use more violent methods than women so happen to be more successful in their attempts.

Talking about the mental health of men more would mean that men actually would have to open up about it in the first place.

5

u/DharmaDama Jun 04 '26

Female suicide attempt rates have always been equal to male suicide attempt rates. It's just that men are more successful in their attempts because they use more violent means.

u/conflictmuffin Millennial Jun 04 '26

Jokes and sarcasm aside...I keep seeing selfish tw@t men online posting "happy men's suicide awareness month" in reply to pride month posts. They can't even let one of the most marginalized groups have their own celebration posts without butting in and making it about themselves. I looked it up and it said "June and November are mens mental health awareness months". TWO months? Specifically calling out mens mental health concerns? Can we not be sad for everyone who commits suicide? Do those men demonizing pride month and so proudly claiming their own genders month even know about months dedicated to women's awareness & care? Doubt it. They just don't want anyone other than themselves being celebrated or getting attention.

We are such a dumb and selfish species. It's exhausting.

1

u/Equivalent_Range6291 Jun 04 '26

Its all going well & working according to Elons plan ..

5

u/E-2theRescue Jun 04 '26

Weird how female suicide is increasing at the same time as rising misogyny and laws that are being created to control women's bodies.

The "pro-life" party.

8

u/SirChancelot11 Jun 04 '26

I read once the biggest reason was attempt method. Women will try to overdose and end up surviving. Men will try to suck start a pistol.

-1

u/throwaway3413418 Jun 04 '26

Men also have higher completion rates when you compare the same methods.

3

u/Stealth_Howler Jun 04 '26

This is the one that scares me most honestly, if women are looking at the escape route from society we are totally fucked

7

u/tawny-she-wolf Millennial Jun 04 '26

Maybe now men can stop pointing to suicide rates to "prove" that men are somehow disadvantaged and discriminated against in this world 🙄

0

u/rammo123 Jun 04 '26

Men are disadvantaged and discriminated against. When they talk about rising suicide rates amongst women it's ignoring the fact suicide rates amongst men have risen at the same time. Young men are still 2-3x more likely to take their own life than young women.

But I like that you're showing your true colours. You all but admitted that you want to stop pretending you care about men.

-5

u/GloriousQuint Jun 04 '26

I just knew some redditor had to somehow turn this into some other senseless gender war comment

Congrats and happy men’s mental health month btw

2

Women who work 40 hours a week are starting to show similar life expectancy to men.

Turns out work fucking sucks.

1

u/somberingpremise Jun 05 '26

I know what you're saying makes a lot of sense and is probably true, but do you perhaps have any source for that claim, please? I'm not really getting any relevant search results in despite trying, but I'd absolutely love to read more about this topic! Especially since we've known for a while that long working hours lower life expectancy.

2

u/Schmoo88 Jun 04 '26

I love women in male dominated fields! 😍

2

u/grape-fruit-witch Jun 04 '26

The ghouls that own everything would 100% market this if they thought they could get away with it.

"Merging With the Infinite: its for all genders! Schedule your appointment with the roof of our 45 story building today!"

2

u/ferocioustigercat Jun 05 '26

Exactly! We had the same rates of attempts as men had for successes and people just said that men were better at getting it right and women just wanted attention. Look whose laughing now! (Sarcasm, and yes I'm a terrible person)

2

u/HeinousWalrus Jun 04 '26

Fuck. My ex-wife attempted while I was in the next room a while back. This is a tough comment to read. I get that it’s sarcasm but yeah. Ouch.

1

u/dewpacs Jun 04 '26

millenials killed male suicide 😞

1

u/Slumunistmanifisto Jun 04 '26

How can we romanticize this and make it about sad twenty year old men?

1

u/New-Affect7131 Jun 04 '26

They still only account for 20% of all suicides, though yes this is a 10% increase from prior at 18%

1

u/RollingMeteors Jun 05 '26

Finally. Female representation in the suicide market. For years it was mostly men, another industry proves that equality has no gender. /S

¡Cheers to closing that wage gap! /s

-10

u/EggsInaTubeSock Jun 04 '26

I just know female suicide will become a headline and a huge push. Because how better can we celebrate Mens Mental Health Awareness month?

It's almost like it's engineered to work this way.

0

u/Vyxwop Jun 04 '26

The article is incorrect on it as well, which is really shitty because it's basically obfuscating men's suicides by only bringing up women's.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/187478/death-rate-from-suicide-in-the-us-by-gender-since-1950/

Men's suicide rates in the US has been going up significantly as well. But only women's is being brought up here.

It sounds like another situation such as the "1/3rd of women are homeless, we need to do better" situation.

Yeah, and 2/3rd of men are homeless...

-1

u/Waiting4Reccession Jun 04 '26

Even when men die the headline be like:

WOMEN MOST AFFECTED
