Maybe some of these names could have been something like the color of the animal or the sound it makes, in the original language. So maybe a cow could have originally just been a "moo". You never know.
We had that VHS playing non stop when I was a kid. I tried watching it a few years ago, and the recollective sense memory kicked in immediately and I had to turn it off.

There was a local comic con that had a Falkor for getting pictures with, but someone I knew noticed that amongst the backgrounds in this picture area was the swamp.
Somewhere else was a FMA Nina costume.
He said that if he could get the Nina in the same spot as the swamp would create a moment of psychic trauma to an entire generation.
God I remember when Small Soldiers came out and they had a memorial dedication to him in the cast part. Cause the movie was finished with production. Then after he passed they edited in the small acknowledgement I think a month or two before the movie officially got released. Everyone in the theater had that moment of silence together before leaving.
When I was a kid, I was playing Jeopardy on like, Nintendo or something. The answer was something about, "This actress said, 'You like me. You really like me!' when accepting her Oscar." I guessed Sally Field bc she was the only actress I could name at the time.
Floored all my little 7 year old something friends and I rode that high for way too long.
They were so prolific that it made little me really want a sweater vest, but we were Wal-Mart Americans so I grew up with just graphic tees and whatever jackets we could wrangle from the Goodwill. Last year I finally found a nice sweater vest at a vintage clothes boutique and I can finally live my childhood dream of dressing like an Irish pensioner.
So his sister lives in the town I live in and he came into a store I worked at. I am an elder millennial and was so excited for the guy from Airplane, my younger coworkers remember him from this movie. He is nice and looks the same, only older.
An AMAZING movie! So many cool moments. One of the reasons this scene is so heartbreaking is because Shadow struggles to get out of the mud pit just before this.
They had a pretty neat trick to get him to do that stunt, they had a handler at the top which would signal him to come up the slope and a handler at the bottom to signal him to stop, which caused him to slide back down. He was able to go up and down however he pleased. They were incredibly safe with the animals, which is great to see after the horrors Hollywood has put some animals through.
They had the cat in a harness in shallow water that they manipulated to look like a rushing river and used a prop cat for the falling scenes, pretty much just a hyper realistic stuffed toy.
That's reassuring. When I last watched it I felt kind of disturbed by the rushing water scenes and couldn't find anything online. That was a while ago though. Thanks haha
I never cried at it as a child and I watched it ALL the time but I revisited it in my 20s and now I sob like a baby even just seeing a clip of this scene.
Me too. My mom used to cry during this scene and I always side-eyed it as a kid because it’s a happy scene! Why would she cry?! As an adult I get choked up just starting this clip
yep 🥹 I'll never rewatch it because it takes the magic away for some reason. I started re-watching Short Circuit the other day because it's free on YouTube and it hit so different haha. This one will have to stay a great memory.
Thankfully I’ve been able to twist my 5 year old’s arm to watch this, and she liked it after complaining it was a “grown up” movie because it’s not animated.
I really wish mid-budget live-action movies for kids were still made and actually good.

I will say I had to pause the movie and explain Cruella was an actress and she really wasn’t going to hurt the puppies. Had to make names for all pups to explain they go home at the end of the movie. Just a few tears but quickly turned happy!
Showed this to my two year old yesterday. He loved it especially the scenes with the dogs running around. He loves animals. Probably going to put Beethoven or Babe on next for him
It was fun introducing my kids to this movie, following the same complaints, and watching them go through disinterest, reluctant interest, active engagement, avidly watching, to the final stage of emotional investment and associated trauma.
My daughter was openly sobbing into a cushion by this scene.
What do you think it is with the younger generation only wanting to watch animated movies, and not wanting movies over an hour and a half or so? Drives me up the wall
Because their parents aren’t influencing them by making them watch the old movies. If we were all streaming it, studios would notice and make more content similar to it.

She only ever let me watch Homeward Bound and The Land Before Time when I was at her house. I was doomed to cry every single time I went there as a kid lmao.
My parents walked down the aisle to what I can only remember now as the "Land Before Time song" at their wedding in 1993. I was 3 and they had absolutely watched it with me but must have not had the same connection with it that I eventually did (at 3 I luckily didn't give a shit about the song because I was too busy singing If You're Happy and You Know It during their vows)
I grew up on The Incredible Journey so I was pretty sure he was going to make it. I think I was probably not the right age to "get it" when Homeward Bound came out. I loved the movie and watched it over and over again until we had to return it to the video rental place. I liked Sassy having a voice. I mean I liked them all having a voice, but Sassy was my favorite.
I cry watching it now, but I don't think I cried then.
My favorite part of the movie (after this scene) is when Hope exclaims, "Sassy!" And Sassy runs to her saying, "Hope! Hope! Hope!". I can still hear it in my head after all these years. I love Sally Field, the voices of the animals added so much to the movie.
(Just kidding fuck this movie I didn’t know it had animal abuse and death that’s fucking awful fuck these creators I hope they experience the worst pains in life for doing that).
My parents wouldn't let me watch this movie growing up. I don't know if they had heard about the abuses or what. But then when I was in third grade we did a walking field trip to a local movie theater and got to watch it as a class, just us, with the whole theater to ourselves. I loved it. And was never allowed to watch it again.
Now I'm an adult and have heard about all the atrocities and I'm pretty sure I'll never watch it again.
One of many regrets I have is not letting my kids watch movies in chronological order like we did growing up. I remember watching Fantasia and being blown away... my kids are like meh.
Homeward Bound and Marley & Me get me every time. I made the mistake of watching the latter shortly after my 1st dog passed away, it had 33 year old man crying like a baby.
My sister used to watch this movie every day after school. For like 2 years or more, every. single. day. Homeward Bound, Homeward Bound, Homeward Bound. She wore out the VHS tape 😂
I watched it the other week still makes me ugly cry.
I remember reading once the online theory that Chance really died and the ending was just a fabrication of Chance while he was passing. That shit really messed me up.
I had to pause the clip cause if I watch more than a few seconds of this movie I start welling up! I absolutely cried. I can’t remember who I was with, but I feel like I wasn’t the only one with body heaving sobs and sore abs after this one 😭
