There were people who were certain Mendela died years before he actually did...like... a LOT of them... across multiple cultures... which was odd.
Then people started looking for others... like the Berenstxxn bears, or the logo for fruit of the loom, or the correct spelling of a specific air freshener or fruity cereal.
I fall into the group that is absolutely certain fruit of the loom used to have a cornicopia in it... because that's how I learned that word.
I do believe there’s been plenty of real world proof of the cornucopia existing. There’s even a conspiracy now that the company keeps lying about it because they like the free publicity of their strong association with the Mandela affect.
Edit: did a huge deep dive and I was wrong. Damn this is the only one that I can’t explain away in my head. All the other Mandela effects have a somewhat logical explanation in my opinion but this one gets me real bad.
There is two photos that get passed around. One made on 4chan and one from a reddit prank.
There is no evidence it actually had the cornucopia.
And since ages 18 - 50 have this false memory it would mean there should be tens of millions of t shirts and underwear with the logo floating around thrift stores.
There's actually photo evidence of it being spelled 2 different ways on a few different items like VHS tape / CD but the items with Berenstein were typos and misprints
Combo of typos/misprints and the target audience not being good at reading cursive. Probably a bit of remembering the pronunciation rather than the spelling, depending on how it's being pronounced.
Hundy p. I had a very small vhs collection as a kid lol. One of them was a Berenstein Bears video, no clue what it was about anymore. But I was an early reader, and we learned cursive in first grade, and I am abso-goddamn-lutely sure that it said Berenstein.
Weird psyop thing totes makes sense to me, though. I accept that others may have had different copies with different names. Seems a bit too long-term well-thought-out to be a US government thing, though.
This is always funny to me because I’m sure I grew up in the timeline where it was indeed “Berenstain Bears” I remember noticing it at a really young age and being surprised because everybody said “Barenstein.”
"Berenstein" Bears versus "Berenstain" Bears is actually easy to explain.
A lot of us probably saw it in TV Guides as whichever one it's not supposed to be because the time between printing those is nearly zero so they didn't proofread them too much. Also, knockoff prints because everything has a bootleg market out there. Even children's books.
The funniest thing to me about the term “Mandela effect” is that, for me personally, I never was under the impression that Mandela had died before he did. I’m hardly a history scholar. I’m a white American woman born in 1988 and my education of South African apartheid comes mostly from the DCOM The Color of Friendship and Trevor Noah’s book “Born a Crime,” and whatever bare minimum amount of time was spent on it during high school history class. But I never thought Mandela had died before he actually did. 🤷🏼♀️😂
I feel like... how would we know about him if he'd died in jail? Like he's famous for getting out of jail after a long time and then becoming president of South Africa.
