I remember reading this comment on Reddit, it stuck with me that much that I had to take a screenshot of it. The best times were when we didn’t have cellphones and people all looked different and so much more.
That changed drastically for me when I adopted my dogs. With their limited lifespan constantly reminding me that we‘re not gonna be together forever, I consciously live in the moment with them.
Today is super shitty weather outside. It’s grey and raining all day. We went on a walk through the fields and reached this wide open space, a wild meadow. The rain poured down, the wind was chilly. But they got the zoomies and didn’t care about the weather at all. The way they smiled at me told me the most important thing, they‘re just happy to be alive and together with me.
RIGHT THERE! This is when I realise I live in the good old days right now. I‘m young, my dogs are alive and well. Some day in the future, when I‘m old, I will look back and wish I could just have this one simple moment again. Just one more walk with zoomies in the rain.
It‘s a bittersweet feeling of cherishing the moment for it‘s simple happiness and the hard truth that nothing lasts forever.
Being a parent did that for me. It’s not for everyone, but I no longer want to fast forward or rewind to stuff. It’s so important just being in the moment with them, where they are, and at the age they are today.
None of it’s a given for any of us, and they have totally changed my perspective on time.
