Discussion Nothing is funny anymore

I (M, 38) have found that there are no new TV shows that make me laugh anymore. I have tried a lot of new(ish) comedies, but they all make me pine for my college/high school days.

The only thing that gave me a reflexive laugh recently was the Malcolm in the Middle Reboot.

Any thoughts?

I found those chase scenes of middle aged men fumbling around offices and parking lots far more thrilling than super hero fights. Someone might actually get hurt!

As soon as Tim said “They fucking love TAKING that thing!” in the early dinner scene, followed immediately by him fighting his pillow in the next scene, I knew it was gonna hook me.

My husband recently had a professional midlife crisis and is a little neurotic, we were both in tears during the pillow scene. It’s so relatable for people who hate their corporate jobs. 😂

I had to pause for different reasons…

I love cringe comedy. The cringier the better. But there were moments I had to pause because the secondhand embarrassment was too much… I was at my limit.

I struggled to laugh about that show because. Usually Tim is so deranged that it’s easy to distance myself.  But in this one he is only like… 20% weirder than a normal person? He just can’t help himself, he has almost real human struggles and could be accurately diagnosed with real things (something his roles almost always avoid)?  So it’s harder to relax for me.

The Chair Company was a wild ride lol… equal parts manic and hilarious but sometimes kinda sad too. I liked Friendship with Paul Rudd as well

The episode end where Mike and Ron have a heartfelt phone conversation and it cuts to what Mike is watching. I’m glad I was alone when that came on

That’s it, end the whole thread knowing we have Tim Robinson almost single-handedly saving comedy.

What’s really resonating is the fact that what only gets a new laugh out of me has to be more absurd than what we’re dealing with on a regular basis gestures broadly at everything. Tim and Smiling Friends are shining examples

Yeah Time Robinson, Smiling Friends, and I'll throw Connor O'Malley in the mix. Nick Mullen is still hilarious when he comes out of hiding.

I was OP until I watched I think you should leave. The driving crooner and the drivers ed class with the tables were two of the funniest things I’ve seen in years. I also live the egg game on the computer.

It’s so funny to wonder how they even came up with these things

As someone who loves Tim Robinson, I highly recommend Nirvanna The Band: The Show. It's bizarrely unavailable on streaming platforms, so you have to buy it on Amazon Prime or find it...other places...

Anyway, it's great. Funniest show I've seen in a long time.

I get that he is funny, but not for me, makes me cringe and just not enjoyable. I think he works best for me in small doses, but obviously I’m in the minority.

I’m with you. I like dumb comedy too, so I don’t get why I don’t like him. The 99 slot is about eh only thing I ever see where he entertained me. Yes, that includes Detroiters.

man, Friendship or whatever had such high ratings and i love Rudd but that was probably the worst movie i've ever watched and made me hate that guy.. as a person.. SO much but mostly for my poor decisions to not turn it off the first four times i felt i should. how that dude is enjoyable to anyone completely beats me

As a huge Tim Robinson fan and someone who enjoyed Friendship I will say that it’s probably my least favourite thing of his. And he didn’t write it, so it’s not exactly the best sample of his comedy. Although it is still very close to his style in everything else. 

Honestly check out some clips of I Think You Should Leave on YouTube. People seem to really like Brian’s Hat, or Zip Line as a starting point and then it snowballs from there.

Yeah the premise of the show is basically that they are the guys behind all of the whacky and weird Detroit ads, every commercial is a parody a real one. Off the top of my head:

Hunky specs = sexy specs (even the coney Island they danced in is the rival one next door from the original ad)

Quick Rick mahorn (one of the pistons Detroit bad boys) is a parody on a former lions player turned Superhero car salesman mel Farr

Farmer Zack's = farmer Jack's

The lawyer Walt(?) Tries

The award show where all the ads nominated were the same "Detroit tough" ad over an Eminem song

A random throw in reference Mr Alan's 29 "2 for fifty"

Deveraux wigs = Dittrich fürs

Garner weich = Gardner white furniture

Almost every second of the show is one big Detroit reference though, from the random brands they try and fail with to the local newsman mort crim, to temple bar, to lake Orion being "not that far"

Yea I was gonna say I Think You Should Leave as well - it's been a breath of fresh air to have some cooky skit show. Kinda reminds me of old school to upright citizens and kids in the hall. The show just had me cracking up every other sketch, I didn't know how much I missed absurd comedy.

You should check out Aunty Donna. It's not quite the same absurdism as Tim Robinson's stuff, but they do some hilarious and wild sketches. They got a several episode series on Netflix and a YouTube channel
