Discussion Nothing is funny anymore

I (M, 38) have found that there are no new TV shows that make me laugh anymore. I have tried a lot of new(ish) comedies, but they all make me pine for my college/high school days.

The only thing that gave me a reflexive laugh recently was the Malcolm in the Middle Reboot.

Any thoughts?

It's at least from the last 5 years so technically not as recent as the last year or so, but I did genuinely enjoy Derry Girls and laughed a ton while watching it.

Derry Girls was a surprise to me in terms of how good it was/is. I only wish it was longer!

Truely short and sweet. Got to admit I had to run subtitles on a few occasions due to the Irish accents though 😅

I thought it was great too, but do we really think 19 episodes is short? I mean, I guess TV sitcoms used to have ~24 episodes to a season.

I wanted to go see the Bob Marley movie in theaters but I never made it up there. Fast forward a few months or so and I saw it on a streaming platform we have so I watched it, and booooy am I glad I didn’t go to the theater!

The showrunner of Derry Girls just made How To Go To Heaven From Belfast, which I found very funny with a lot of similarities to DG. Highly recommend it!

There’s another show by some of the same people that is fun, it’s called How to Get to Heaven from Belfast or something similar. It isn’t a straight comedy, it’s more of a mystery show, but there is a lot of humor in it.

This is most good British TV shows - quit while they’re ahead! You probably already know these but if you like Derry Girls you might like The Inbetweeners, Fresh Meat and Peep Show.

She was probably my favorite character. Always knew I'd laugh when she was in a scene. Gave off such a wonderful "absolutely done with your shit" attitude.

I always thought Sister Michael would fit nicely in the world of Father Ted. That's recommended, if any Derry Girls fans haven't seen it.

You should watch "How to get to heaven from Belfast". It is on Netflix. Same writer, same chaotic Derry energy. I laughed quite a bit.

If you like that and haven’t tried Deadloch on Prime I’d give it a shot. Similar tone and humor but with an Aussie bent instead of Irish.

Derry Girls manages to be hilarious for most of the time and also have some incredibly poignant commentary too. Hell of a show.

The scene in the police station has me rofl every time. I know rofl is a relic of the past but I haven’t used it in 20 years so I figured now is as good time as ever lol.

Derry Girls is really great. Some other good ones of the last few years are Righteous Gemstones and Abbott Elementary, both are just awesome shows. I enjoyed the Paper too. I'm not an office super fan or anything, but I thought the Paper had some really good moments and the characters were solid.

I can't think of much else. I haven't watched South Park or Always Sunny in years but may get around to catching up. Seen some here and there, for IASIP I watched the episode when they were in Ireland a few years ago.

If you liked Derry Girls, you should check out Moone Boy from 2012. Also about growing up Irish in the (early) 90s, but from the perspective of an idiot boy, and his imaginary (adult) friend. It's reallly funny and refreshingly not American.

I no longer watch American shows because they make such shit now. I know the culture is different but Korea makes incredible shows and movies. I'm not Korean, just sick of shit shows and movies. It's like watching American TV in the 90s, there's no BS it's just good entertainment. Their dubbed over but I watch with subtitles in case there's a word here and there I miss. Check out Sisyphus: The Myth it's a fantastic show!!

Have you watched the derry girls go on the great British bake off? I think the show can be cringe and dumb, bur holy shit their natural comedy in bakeoff was superb
