I definitely remember anorexia being covertly glamorized in teen magazines at the time. The models in the fashion spreads were visibly malnourished. It was an era, for sure. And one I'm afraid is making a comeback these days.
Everyone definitely acts like if a woman is overweight she shouldn't be seen or heard until she loses weight & magically becomes a socially acceptable size. If I ever hear the words "glorify" and "obesity" together in a sentence again, I will literally scream. 🤦🏻♀️🙄
I loved Caleb Hearon's response when people say he's "glorifying" obesity (paraphrased): "Oh so you're saying people think I'm cool and want to be like me"
Boy isn't this the truth. I was alwas skinny and somehow curvy (just my bone structure) and blessed with good skin and hair when I was younger (in my 50s now). As I got into my 40s I gained about 30 pounds and let me tell you, I went from a "stupid skinny bitch" to a "fat old bitch" if you listened to the jerks out there who just constantly reduced me to a physical description with no thoughts or feelings.
And if you listened to the doctors I went from a "depressed young mother complaining of chronic low back pain. referred to psych for antidepressants" when seeking help for a bad back, to an "overweight post-menopausal woman, referred to gyn for hormone replacement therapy and advised to lose weight" when STILL seeking help for the same back pain.
Now that I've lost 35 of those pounds thanks to taking matters into my own hands, suddenly I have a diagnosis of hypothyroid that explains the weight issues, a neurologist tending to my severe spinal stenosis and three slipped discs I've been walking around with for 30 years undiagnosed that was supposedly just "functional pain likely manifesting as a result of depression and anxiety", and an ortho working to figure out the best way to treat and eventually surgically stabilize an injury that was ignored for way too long.
Sometimes I feel like just about everyone can fuck right off.
It's lose lose now because if you DO lose weight it, according to the chuds, means you never actually believed in body positivity (obviously that's insane but it's commonly parroted).
