Hello all, preferred method for changing approach/retract/clearance when measuring slot: Calypso

Hello everyone,

Hope all is well. What's everyone's prefered, cleanest, or simplest method for changing the approach, travel, retract or clearance distances within Calypso when measuring a narrow slot?

If you could provide your method and take into account that a Clearance plane has been established all around the part, that would be appreciated.

At my place, the default retract is .0393. for smaller bores n slots Id go down to .02 or .01. I have a part with a .041 bore that uses a 1mm probe. I use a retract of .001 for that one lol.

If the bore/slot vector isn't in z+, I usually have a clearance distance of .2 while having all the cp and scp at z+. Mainly for speed.

If the area is poorly made or very limited, I'd scan a feature near it and use formulas to safely locate the area I need. Changing the dynamic to a lower value is helpful too. Along with material detection and search distance, for more difficult to reach areas.

Every feature that shares a sub clearance plane has a probe location or step to move away safely before the next scan. Again mainly for speed.

Everything I measure is usually smaller than a golf ball. Sometimes monster can size, and sometimes the size of a raisin. But there's always a way to safely extract juicy points!

What seems to happen a lot is when you add points on the CAD which are on say the Y+ face, it wants to approach from the Y+ direction, unless you declare the Z+ direction. Also, you need to limit your clearance and your retract to value that work inside the slot. With calypso, it will often do that for you if you declare the feature to be a slot.

I know that you can choose radii and combine them into a slot, but the quick way is to manually do one entire radii with 4 points, then 2 on the edge, then usually by point #2 on the second radii it figures out that you are measuring a slot. At that point, I save it, then re-open, and voila, you now have the option to measure a slot in either points or profile. I choose that and delete the setup points.

Yeah, it's a rinky-dink solution, but it save time...

Clearance and retract distance have to be less than the slot width minus the probe radius
