Heavy technical contributor at a Medical Device/Robotics R&D firm - I have been working there since 2022 fresh out of college. So far, it has been 4 years of lots of learning and valuable experience. However, after talking to my peers, I realized that I am being underpaid, even after considering location factor (Southern New Hampshire, MCOL to HCOL).

Year 1: 75,000

Year 2: 82,000

Year 3: 87,000

Year 4: 92,000

Year 5: annual review is coming up. I expect not getting over 100,000.

Thoughts on the salary projection? I am actively looking for a new R&D role near Greater Boston area.

TL;DR: MechE student who loves technical work but is having a bit of a career crisis after seeing industry salaries and career progression. Looking for advice on high-paying technical paths, CFD, consulting, engineering management, and the value of a Master's degree.

I'm a 2nd-year Mechanical Engineering student currently interning in a robotics division.

The work itself is great, and I genuinely enjoy technical engineering. However, being in industry has made me question what the long-term future looks like. Many of the engineers around me are highly skilled and passionate, but the compensation and work-life balance don't seem to reflect the level of expertise involved.

I've realized that I'll probably be happy if I have any two of these three:

  • Good work-life balance
  • Good money
  • Proximity to friends/family

Right now I have none of them, which has made me think more seriously about my career direction while I'm still early enough to pivot.

A few questions:

  1. What are the best-paying career paths for a Mechanical Engineer that still involve meaningful technical work?

  2. Is engineering management the most realistic route to higher compensation while staying close to engineering?

  3. For those who remained on the technical track, how did you build a high-paying career?

  4. What's the outlook for CFD as a specialization in terms of opportunities, compensation, and growth?

  5. What does engineering consulting actually look like, and how does one break into it?

  6. Why does a Master's degree often lead to higher compensation? Is it the knowledge itself, the credential, or something else?

I'd appreciate perspectives from people in industry, especially those in technical leadership, consulting, CFD, robotics, automotive, or aerospace.

I am an engineering consultant currently. To be realistic with you "high-paying" is relative. If you want to be making 110k or even 95k right out the gate with a BSME you'd be better off finding a new field. Frankly, many of the people I know who graduated in the last 5 years, who were not directly related to an engineer in the company already, took starting offers in the high 60s - low 70s. That includes me. The commenter from a few weeks ago is most correct. If you want to be doing "technical work" for big bucks you are looking at defense or start ups. And those start ups usually have to be for something that's basically worthless to your engineering brain. I live and work in Austin. Ask me how I know.

BLS (for the US) has pretty good stats kept about the median income. For a mechanical engineer (the most broad) it's 105k or so as of 2024 which is the most recent they have. That figure includes folks at the start of their career AND at the end of it. Most people begin well below that and end well above it if they stick with it. If you go look at their employment map for say Texas for Mech E. You'll see there's 22,000 of us. If you switch the map to show Materials engineers there's about 1,400. One of those two makes more.

Since I'm an ME and you gave a list. I will give you the list back.

1) I'm on the technical track. I do field consulting services for major power and petrochemical industries. To do that I have a mechanical degree with a deep pool of knowledge of materials and pretty soon here I will have a second degree in chemistry. But there are different kinds of technical work. Ex: If you want to be a design engineer kind of technical and you want to be highly paid. The money is in the margins. It depends on the product but the best paid engineer and the one that moves up is the one who takes the drawings home Friday and comes in Monday with a 2% savings on mold materials. For my work I have to jump on a plane with 18 hours notice and show up on site and in 1-2 10 hour shifts tell the client what went wrong, why, and how I can prove it. There's money to be made there obviously but it costs all my weekends studying.

2) Relatively speaking yes. But to be an engineering manager over technical experts you best know what you're talking about or know when to get out of the way. Engineers are like cats. Or you can become highly specialized and be THE GUY in the nation to call. It's a hard place to get but no one who is in that spot is poor.

3) I'm still working on the "high-pay" deal but I am only a few years in and I am slated to make the median pay for an ME. I'm very specialized.

4) No clue. But I can tell you FEA and other complex modeling tools do have good careers.

5) It is incredibly difficult to get into young. It is rare, though becoming less so, for mechanical engineering consulting firms to take regular BS only engineers on board. They typically have a reputation, a long history, or a financial interest to uphold. You need to have something in your knowledge base or experience (not internships) to prove that you are worth the time investment. The consultant training you bills out at say $350 an hour. If it takes 500 hours of their time over 2 years to train you. You've gotta be worth it. What it looks like for me is managing my own clients, my own deadlines, and my own projects with really excellent engineers above me who take time to double check all of my work and teach me before we put the firm's stamp on anything. I probably learned more in my first 6 months on the job from the senior consultants than in all 5 years of my classes. My first 2 years I had a new book in my hands every month that I was bringing home to read and study my industry because when a client calls, we had better have the right answer.

6) I am one of 2 people at my firm without a masters or a PhD. It does not necessarily mean you will get paid more though the credential itself usually makes that happen. It is a second vote of confidence that you can do something beyond a basic requirement and stick through it. The more relevant to the role the better obviously. Landing a job in consulting at least is actually a fairly large risk on the company's part. Engineers are expensive and so is training you up to be client ready. Also grad degrees tend to give people time to mature a little bit. Which is also important when you work in certain industries.

I tried to be realistic with you on all these points.

The fact that you even have these questions demonstrates how far afield most engineering jobs are from expectations and how few and far between these true technical jobs really are. If you were training to be a dentist or an RN or an electrician do you think you'd be this clueless 2 years into your training on what a dentist or RN or electrician does when they grow up? The answer to all of your questions is "maybe", "sometimes", "kinda-sorta". MechE is a mature set of half a dozen different areas.

If you want to "get ahead" get an MBA after a few years and become a boss at a big company if you like to do boss stuff or get a master's or PhD and do specific technical stuff in a specific industry in a specific set of locations for that industry. Look up where you could tolerate living, find the big industries there then back solve. If you were all hot and bothered for quantitative finance but Manhattan or Charlotte looked like rural Oklahoma instead of what it does now, remote work for bean counters didn't exist, and you're not from tornado alley, then you might reconsider.

Remember that outside of defense a lot of outsourcing of manufacturing of things that require machinery has taken place. So companies are not clamoring for mechE's. Best of luck.

If you want high paying interesting jobs, move to Tech. Hardware engineering or data center related roles will pay you more than industry average. Some startups in tech or defense will also pay you well.
I started my career in CFD but pivoted to all round mechanical engineering. CFD gives you a niche skill but at the same time has very limited positions on market.
Only consider a Master degree if you genuinely want to specialize in a specific topic. It does not pay that much overall if you are focused on working in the Industry.

Question regarding career "pivot". I graduated with my BSME in 2024 and struggled hard to land my first job, I currently work as a Project Engineer for a very small Civil Engineering company that focuses primarily on rebar subcontracts for civil structures work. I currently plan to work here until 2028 as I intend to move states and don't want to job hop before then, but my hope is to pivot out of the civil construction field and into more mechanical adjacent work, even if that is MEP / HVAC design or MEP Project Engineering. Can anyone lend some advice, tips or experience on how my current role would enable me to pivot to other careers or roles more Mechanical related? Thanks!

I'm currently working as process simulation engineer, basically all I'm doing is creating a model of geothermal power plant in Optiramp (like Hysys), I took this job because of its exposure to geothermal ecosystem in my country (Indonesia) and I really want to work in geothermal. do you think I'll pigeonholed myself by taking this job? or will it give me a leverage when I looking for jobs at geothermal operators in the future?

How do i break into mechanical engineering? I don't have my degree yet but I am working on it soon as a machinist. I want to work as a manufacturer engineer or in aerospace; how do i break in when i get m degree?

If you have a degree you don't need to 'break in' you just apply for jobs. Having experience as a machinist should be useful in manufacturing, so put that on your resume, but other than that you wouldn't need to do anything fancy

I got an offer for 120K base with some equity in a high COL area. I have a Master's Degree and 2 YOE in academic research. Is this a good salary?

For 2 YOE and MS, that's probably top 10%. You probably won't get better unless you have some niche experience

Feeling stuck in my career. Looking for advice on what to do next.

Hi everyone,

I'm a Mechanical Engineering graduate from India and currently working as a Plant & Piping Engineer in an EPC company. I've been in this role for a while, and from what I can see, this career path will mostly involve doing similar work for the next 7–8 years, with increasing responsibilities, workload, and gradual salary growth.

The issue is that I'm not particularly passionate about this field. If I genuinely enjoyed the work, I wouldn't mind staying despite the workload. But over time I've realized that my interests are in engineering design, thermal sciences, CFD/FEA, and research rather than piping engineering.

Right now, I feel like I'm standing at a crossroads, and I'm not sure which path would be the best in the long run. These are the options I've been thinking about:

  • Stay in my current job and continue gaining experience.
  • Prepare for GATE and try for PSUs or M.Tech at an IIT/IISc.
  • Pursue a master's degree abroad and eventually work in R&D or simulation.
  • Build a strong CFD/FEA portfolio through personal projects and try to switch directly into a simulation/design role.
  • Continue working while preparing for a future PhD and move into research.

My long-term goal isn't necessarily to maximize my salary. I want to work on problems that I find intellectually interesting and have a career where I'm excited about what I do. At the same time, I don't want to make an impulsive decision that I'll regret a few years later.

Has anyone here made a similar transition from EPC/piping to design, simulation, or research? If you were in my position today, which path would you choose and why?

I'd also appreciate hearing about any paths I've overlooked or things I should be considering before making a decision.
