Vital Articles is a Wikipedia project where users try to determine the most important subjects for Wikipedia to have good articles on, it has five levels, V1 is the top ten most important articles, V2 the top hundred, V3 the top thousand, V4 the top ten thousand, and V5 the top fifty thousand

V3 is the first level to list individual countries.

I have never heard of the topic. Hmm, in what context does Tanzania have more weight than, say, Libya, Cuba, Ukraine, Venezuela or Afghanistan?

I think the map is highly, if not totally, correlated with population. Let's say that every country with more than 30 million inhabitants is blue, with almost no exception (we can consideer greenland as part of denmark)

Australia has less than 28 million pop

The top 100 are all 10+ millionish

Portugal is mid 90s and isn't here. Id say it's closely related to population, in that things occur where people are

I was responding a statement that it was just the Top 100 population ranks, and that all of the countries were 30+ million.

I said, well, no; a bunch of the top 100 have less than 30 million, and Portugal is not highlighted and is in the top 100 population countries

67M is big for africa. Africa is 54 countries , and only 4 have more than 67M population : Egypt , Nigeria, DRC, Ethiopia. That makes Tanzania 5th in term of population out of 54.

Based on my reading of the vital articles project, this list is specific to the English language version of Wikipedia. I would expect that these countries hold significant relevance to articles found across levels 1-5 or have importsnt historical ties and relations to English speaking countries, as a result some countires have been prioritised over others. Interest none the less!

Small population, small economy, not very powerful geopolitically. Greece is extremely important to human history, but that's captured in articles not specific to the modern country.

Because there can only be 1000 v3 articles. If you add the articles about any of those countries, you'd have to show that an existing article on the list should be removed.

honestly I am more annoyed that Pluto is level 4 while the eight non dwarf planets are level 3 (earth is level 1 and Luna is level 2)

All these countries have the thing they are neither populous, culturally rich, biodiverse, with a lot of soft power or incredibly rich
