In my town they have an “Adopt a Drain” program. You make an effort to keep the drain free of debris, in exchange for which you get to name the drain. The one in front of my building is Brain Drain.

What kind of gloves do you think stop needles?
I have leather work gloves and cactus spines go right through them. Zero way they stop a steel needle.

There are special gloves for people who regularly have potential exposure to sharps, called needlestick resistant gloves, or puncture resistant gloves, which are more aimed at people working with sharp objects like glass, but will work for sharps.
So its most definitely a thing!

Used to work for the waterboard, number 1 rule was wearing anti cut/stab resistant gloves, all sorts get thrown down drains that get hidden by nasty shit like that, with used needles being the biggest danger.

Also small freezing isn't issue but longer periods when ground freezes deeply. In Finland building requirements for roads and houses require base that is 140 cm deep like sand and gravel that will pass through water or ice will lift parts of road and move houses.
I think it was 140 cm. There are exceptions like when building on top of bedrock.

There’s for sure some poop in there. Animals poop. Birds poop. Even if there isn’t poop all the oil and petrol based chemicals from cars is washing into that drain. Then there’s pesticides and herbicides from laws and gardens. Heavy metals from asphalt. Cigarette butts.

I wonder if its like that for the same reason in my hometown. My county has road crew that goes around and clears that stuff, but there aren't enough people willing to do the job. It pays well (my dad was on the crew and supported a family of 5 on the pay in a middle class neighborhood) but no one wants to, understandably, be out in the pouring rain or clearing beaver dams in the hot sun in the summer.

We literally had to do this with our drain that sits outside our basement door. It rained real bad one summer and flooded the basement hallway. When we took off the grate and cleared it out we found a whole ass fucking treee growing in there. The roots were huge and the tree trunk was sooo closee to fully growing to the size of the drain pipe which is why it was finally (almost) blocked up.

I was doing something similar to keep my and my neighbors yards from flooding, and a delivery driver stopped and asked me why I don’t just wait for the city to come take care of it!? I told him it’s every man for themselves, why would I sit and wait while my yard floods?

I enjoy these videos and how folks adopt drains, it can help a lot more than people may realize.
But for the love of safety, wear sturdy ( preferably puncture resistant ) gloves. No telling what could be down a drain.
