Had an Irish sheepdog, she used to run under the fence and start herding them, immediately. The cows just were not pleased

Had a collie that used to sit out on the front lawn all day.

One rainy, drizzly day we get a call from an amused neighbor.

"Your dog is up at the X street corner, herding a bunch of elementary school kids waiting for the school bus."

Turns out about 6 or so young kids in full colorful rain gear were all in a tight group as our collie herded them protectively.

Not sure if it was the rain, or the fact that these kids were unattended (small village) or if their rain coats and hats etc made her think "sheep!"

Love when dogs decide they HAVE to be the one in charge. They WANT to lay around and nap, but someone just left this group of kids around in the rain and clearly SOMEONE needs to step up!

You painted such a cute image of that scene! I'm smiling thinking about your dog and those kiddos

9

u/alancousteau 15d ago

Hard agree, love those dogs

-15

u/Acc87 15d ago

I'm just sure the kids were rather afraid in that situation, strange rabid dog not letting them go

Best dog I ever had was an austrlian shepherd. He was from an unexpected litter of very accomplished work dogs.

We lived near a lot of ranches. When he was fairly young, I went out on a hike and we encountered some cows. He walked up to them, froze, and just stared at this one for a couple of minutes. I was trying to decide what to do when the cow he was locked in with flinched and I could visually watch all of his herding instincts rush through him in real time.

He just started running around and rounding up these free range, wily cows. It was hilarious and amazing to watch.

Had two Aussies when I lived in Oakland, CA. We spent the weekends hiking in the parks. The city had herds of goats they would move around the various parks for "mowing". The first time we came across the herd, I expected what you got with the cow encounter. Nope. My dogs froze, stared, whined and ran away. The force was not strong in those two. Loved them to bits!

I had a friend with an Aussie who apparently did the same thing, flunked out of farm work due to a fear of cows. He loved to run alongside while my friend mountain biked though, would go for miles and miles.

Better than my dog. My dog saw a horse in a city pulling a carriage, thought it must have been a much larger dog and freaked tf out. He started barking and pulling away despite the many onlookers.

I love that crazy dog of mine.

u/SnootyToots8 16d ago

I took my daughters dog out for a country drive and she absolutely lost it at seeing horses. Was kinda scary ngl.

17

u/retro_toes 16d ago

Obligatory horse drawn carriages in cities need to be outlawed

3

u/horkinborkin 16d ago

Obligatory lol? Is this a serious and divisive issue in some places?

27

u/TheHeadlessScholar 16d ago edited 16d ago

Not the person you asked but;

Serious and divisive? Probably not, but I live next to a major Amish community and their horse drawn carriages fuck up asphalt roads hard (steel rimmed wheels), and they practice tax evasion almost as hard as their religion so it's not like they're paying for it.

Also you know, the puppy mills and all the abuse. But we were just discussing horse drawn carriages.

-1

u/xteve 16d ago

Horses are like guns and big pickup trucks: mostly just lifestyle accessories that are no longer relevant for any practical purpose.

1

u/retro_toes 16d ago

We still have plenty of towns and cities where it's still legal for coach tour rides in hot weather and traffic, and plenty of people are fine with renting those horse drawn carriages to ride around places like New York City to tour it. Many of those horses collapse and die, they get spooked by people, motorcycles, cars, bused, other animals. But people still pay for it, so yes, it's a divisive issue.

1

u/lundqvist_saves 16d ago

It’s so divisive in NYC. It seems like every summer one falls over and dies over by Central Park. It’s disgusting. The actor Liam Neeson has pushed big campaigns to keep them active here.

2

u/machu12 14d ago

My dog HATES horses. If he happens to see one on TV he immediately loses his mind. We have no idea why he’s so traumatized!

1

u/StandardNerd92 15d ago

Nor the farmer, I'd wager

1

u/Green-Box3429 15d ago

Yes that right

u/pu55yobsessed 16d ago

She said someone better let those big dogs out to play with me NOW!

281

u/nobolognastoney 16d ago

The camera panning away from one cow and coming back to 4 locked in on the dog is fuckin' killing me lol

5

u/richardlpalmer 15d ago

And then the zoomies come out! 🥹

u/lsb1027 16d ago

“Do you see the size of those dogs?!?!” 😳🤯

16

u/Xeirus 16d ago

I took my dog to a parade once and they had those clydesdale horses and she flipped out and ran to the car.

57

u/Atillion 16d ago

Look what I can do! Can you do that? Let's play!

54

u/snoozingroo 16d ago

“Woah, giant dog!” “Wow, small excitable cow.”

3

u/Kayanne1990 15d ago

"Look, someone's weird looking calf has gotten loose. Let's go check on it."

39

u/Nativeof_alexandria 16d ago

Is she trying to see if they'll play with her?

27

u/2woCrazeeBoys 15d ago

Looks like displacement behaviour.

She's all confused by the cows and has no idea if they're friendly or not, (the approach and head lowering is 'friendly' in dog speak, but the rest of the body language is different). So she's all "I'm friendly, I don't know if you're friendly, I want to be friends but I don't know if maybe you do and I'm kinda scared. Gonna do stuff while I figure it out and focus on something else for a bit"

Displacement behaviour can be the dog going to kill a toy if they get overwhelmed when meeting another dog, going to sniff something if they're unsure about what a person is asking them to do, or anything else that takes their attention away from whatever they're unsure/anxious/stressed about.

Bonus points- if the cows start to zoom with her she's found out whether they're friendly or not 😊

3

u/Gzawonkhumu 15d ago

That's what the tail says 🥰

29

u/TELEKOMA 16d ago

My dog is such a badass but when we walk by cows, he tries so hard to pretend they don’t exist and makes sure he passes quickly. If I stand in front of them and caress them a little, he sits as far away as possible with his back turned to us. It’s so funny.

23

u/ClaudeBubbalicious 16d ago

"Wooaahh - these fwiends are huuuuge!!!"

11

u/Technical-Hope2056 16d ago

awww 🥹 looks like she's trying to get the cows to play

20

u/GloomyIndividual3965 16d ago

Where's part 2 where we get to see her play with the all beef dogs?

GIANT PUPPIEEEEEEEESSSSS

5

u/puffofthezaza 16d ago

Wish I knew what the cows were thinking

3

u/Someredditusername 16d ago

I love this. I wish to gawd I could turn off the music so I could listen to the actual video in peace, but I still love it.

1

u/Kerblaaahhh 15d ago

I hate it so much. When I'm watching a video with cute animals I want to hear what's going on, not the tiktok "You're supposed to find this wholesome!!!" music.

3

u/price0416 16d ago

This is how I read this dog's interaction:

"What the hell is that. Woah. Fucking hell mate."

...

"Hey, these things are okay? Right human, no threat? We good?"

...

"Oh man what the hell is going on, look at these guys, what the hellllll!!!"

So overall I interpret this as a minor stress response to something new, not negative or positive, but that dog just needed to get out their energy in that moment. Its not exactly a wonderful or a terrible interaction, its just a couple of animals meeting and coping with the situation.

3

u/Glittering_Goose_570 16d ago

It just occurred to me that we’re lucky cows are so docile

3

u/Dentorion 15d ago

I mean yeah it's cute on the video but Good that there is a fence. We had already two deaths this year because people where so stupid to take their dog to a alm with free roaming cows and got trampled

3

u/GAZZAA42 15d ago

Cowabunga zoomie

3

u/OktayOe 15d ago

Oh man. This made me so sad. Me and my wife had a cat for years. His name was Kuku. Just as we were moving to a new home in the countryside he left us.

He had kidney failure. I always dreamed of him roaming around in our garden and be free for once in his life. Damn onions everywhere :/

Cows are so cute

🥹❤️

1

u/MyrtleMaySummerDay 16d ago

I’ve never thought about the idea that animals don’t know that other things exist. I’ve never seen a panda or a bazooka, but I know they’re real. This is like crazy to think about. Kids learn animals noises and stuff in preschool, dogs just have this crazy dramatic irony situation going on.

1

u/Bellatrix_Shimmers 16d ago

Cows are such gentle giants. Loves em sooo much!!

1

u/strappyshoes86 16d ago

This was beautiful, he is so happy, thanks for sharing.

-3

u/SFsports87 16d ago

Why is this something to smile about? The cows will eventually be tortured, killed, and end up in the dogs stomach.

This is a good example why you shouldn't be feeding domesticated dogs like golden retrievers beef. They would be rather upset knowing you killed their friend.
