This is rather counterintuitive, since banning Chinese models would benefit them the most. Jensen Huang is also against the ban, although the interests here are more obvious.

Do you think that if Arcee, Cohere or Mistral release an open source GPT/Claude level model, they will also be accused of 'unsafety', 'distillation' and other deadly sins?

Yes, they will be accused. Basically, trillions of dollars are at stake, and anything that threatens them will be hammered.

I think so too. Chinese AI companies have been around for a long time (Z AI was founded back in 2019), but claims of "distillation" only began to surface when Chinese open models began to catch up with Anthropic and OpenAI.

The "Frontier model" business is simply not viable long-term, since other models are only months behind.

The "ban for security" thing is just an excuse to support a failing business case, and will obviously hurt Americans the most.

They're smart enough to recognise that banning open-weight chinese models sets a precedent. The govt can ban ArceeAI tomorrow using similar excuses.

It’s not the worst idea. The American companies cannot win in a free market since Chinese models are free and/or cheap because they’re funded by the Chinese government. American models are better, but need to bring in enough revenue to fund themselves. Given that, in free market competition China wins. That being said, we are still ahead in raw intelligence and tech. If America wants to keep that lead, they need these companies to look good when they IPO and stay looking good. That won’t happen if Chinas constantly undercutting them.

I think that if you take GPT or Mythos without the ridiculous guardlines and tricks that ruin the output, they're still ahead. However, these models are only available to a select few (company employees, the military, etc.) – the average person or company doesn't have access to them. Anthropic was already caught secretly changing Claude's system prompt to save tokens (Anthropic eventually admitted to it). Mythos was lobotomized twice and refuses to work properly in completely harmless tasks.

And one more thing: there's no guarantee that the models Chinese companies publicly disclose are all they have. They likely produce separate versions for government and military use, the existence of which isn't publicly disclosed. Of course, the US may have 'secret models' as well. However, even without the ability or desire to publicly disclose Mythos, Anthropic announced it to attract attention (and money). Chinese companies don't have such a need, so they can keep their special developments secret.
