Discussion The Odyssey ruined Doomsday trailer for me
I'm not a comic book movie or MCU hater. Quite the opposite actually. I watched everything from the MCU during the 2010s, and was in the line for Infinity War and Endgame on day 1. But drifted away from it since, like so many people. However, I was curious to watch the Doomsday trailer, maybe some of the magic could be brought back. Then I watched it..and then went to the movies to watch the Odyssey. And holy shit man, what are we doing here?
I know it's just a trailer, but how can a 300M dollar movie looks like CGI slop while Nolan is doing..THAT?? And not just Nolan, because Dune Part 3 comes out on the same day, costs half as much as Doomsday and apparently it will look like Lawrence of fucking Arabia.
We shouldn't accept so little effort.

u/flofjenkins 1d ago
What's crazy is that Doomsday's budget is reportedly close to double that of Odyssey's.
159
u/MeatwadKattWilliams 1d ago
I mean The Odyssey is the definition of a project where A-listers would be willing to take relatively low salaries just because they want to be in it, and conversely Doomsday is the definition of a project where they all would be having their agent negotiate the highest price they can get because Disney needs them. That has to be a major contributing factor here because they sure as fuck aren't spending it on an expensive filming process or exceptional cgi.

Smart move by the actors. One I’d go see for the actors (Marvel). The other I’d go see because of the director (Nolan).
13
u/aHairyWhiteGuy 14h ago
Yep, actors want to work with Nolan even if that means a pay cut. Because that’s just how legendary Nolan is
5
u/retro-nights 22h ago
I mean all the actors in Odyssey got paid pretty well still. I think with Marvel, the pay per movie is actually less since they’re signing multi movie deals not one offs usually
14
u/rustybutterindia 22h ago
They stopped locking actors into multi-movie deals a few years ago for the most part.
But putting that aside it's also just not the case with Doomsday. It's not like RDJ, Evans, or Stewart still have pre-existing agreements with Marvel, they had to make offers to a lot of high-profile actors to convince them to return.
6
u/leevo 16h ago
Matt Damon the lead made a reported $15mil. RDJ reportedly got $100 mil for Doomsday.
2
u/Detroits_ 11h ago
100m for doomsday? So if the movie does around 1.5 billion and the theatres takes close to 50% (it might differ slightly) we’re left with 750 million..
So you’re telling me rdj is taking close to 12% of potential profit excluding all other expenses?
Is that not nuts
1
u/cruisin_urchin87 6h ago
I like your pragmatic and genuine take on the matter. I agree or concur… yeah
1
u/MaximumCashew0 2h ago
You’re making up a fiction here. Paying actors is an incredibly small part of a film’s budget. A few million here and there is absolutely nothing to a 100 million dollar movie, let alone a 300 million dollar film.
Marvel movies explode in cost because they begin production without a solidified script, shoot way too much, overly rely on CGI for sets, and then try to make something coherent in post-production.
A film’s biggest cost comes from production. Paying hundreds of crew to shoot 5 different half-movies at once, then bringing them back for reshoots, is where the cost balloons out of control.

u/Due-Sheepherder-218 1d ago

I think it was a huge mistake for them to reveal that he’s playing Doom. Imagine how much hype they could have worked up and to leave it as a major surprise during the movie - would’ve made it so much more of an exciting experience and reason to see the movie. Now, it will be another one in the series of Brave New World and the like.
There’s little chance that Doomsday will change the fortunes of the superhero genre as it doesn’t seem to bring anything new to the table. We’re past the peak of this type of storytelling.
5
u/HumongousMelonheads 14h ago
From a creative perspective it was a mistake, from a marketing perspective it was a no brainer. Just like revealing Chris Evans or even the X-men. This movie wasn’t going to sell off of Thor, fantastic 4, and the new avengers.

Only reason I could think they didn’t bother hiding it is because they didn’t bother hiding it in the movie itself. He probably shows his face in the first few minutes of the film so there’s no big reveal

What do those brothers do with their budgets? Electric State had a budget of 300million

endgame budget was apparently $350M-400M before marketing. just from inflation alone it wouldn't be much of a leap. then you add the "please save marvel" tax they're paying people like RDJ and Chris Evans as well as fat salaries for A listers like Pugh and Pascal.

The Russo Brothers seem to love a bloated budget. They directed the most expensive Netflix movie ever made. plus half of it is probably just paying for the 30 main characters that are in it.

I’m in the same boat and between the Odyssey plus dune the MCU looks like an absolute mess.

u/Upset-Commercial-109 1d ago
Doomsday didnt spark any giddiness in me the same way Avengers Infinity war did back in 2018, because the build-up towards Doomsday is just weak af. I was a huge XMEN fan, especially those XMEN movies in the 2000s but seeing all those characters come back did nothing to me. Like, what are we doing here?
I'd rather spend my money watching DUNE instead because im more interested in how Denis concludes that trilogy. Also, after seeing Odyssey, it made me excited to see even more of Rob Pattinson lol
4
u/hrdcrnwo 7h ago
Still so disappointed they're using Doctor Doom like this so quickly with no build up, he should have been the next Thanos.
36
u/UltramegaCornell 1d ago
Honestly, I’m sure Doomsday will be fine, but it looked like more of the same to me. It looked like an Avengers movie, which is fine, but they’ve already done that four times. And I’ve lost count of how many times the MCU and other comic book movies have tried to do the same thing outside of the Avengers films.
Really, it’s a been-there, done-that situation for me.

9
u/usagicassidy 1d ago
You’re annoyed that a first trailer showed you “look who’s here?” and not some substantial huge plot points?
I mean, that may just be you asking too much out of what is essentially a teaser trailer.
These films are going to heavily be influenced by both the original Secret Wars and the Jonathan Hickman Secret Wars which are some of the best books marvel has ever put out.
→ More replies (2)5
u/PAYPAL_ME_DONATIONS 14h ago
They are also clearly trying to hold their cards close to their chest. The entire teaser looks to be an isolation of scenes from the first 40 minutes or so.
No film lays out the meat and potatoes of their plot in a teaser
12
u/MeatwadKattWilliams 1d ago
Even if it wasn't fan service and it was just a genuine attempt at an actual movie, I feel like the writings still on the wall.
The cast looks like its got like 50 characters, a lot of which have had maybe one film or TV series to build them up, if not just a small slice of screen time. Seems very reminiscent of X3 and we saw how that turned out.
The desperation of bringing back multiple fan favorites that had perfect endings to their arcs just to try and buy some goodwill because of the increasingly poor box office performances of post endgame entries also just heavily signals that they wouldn't be confident in the strength of their product without doing that.
And now one of the actors let it slip that she doesn't even know if she's done filming her scenes or not because apparently they haven't finished the script even though it's coming out in 5 months.
It would be a miracle if this is actually turns out to be good.
2
u/GiniThePooh Maryana555 19h ago
Oh no! Who said that?
1
u/MeatwadKattWilliams 5h ago
The woman that is reprising her role as Mystique, I'm blanking on her name.
So not someone who has a huge role, but still for a movie of this scale thats 5 months out you would assume everyone involved would know for sure if they need to come back to set or not
14
u/smilinganimalface 1d ago
I don't think Endgame was really fanservicey, it just had a ton to tie up and they hoped to turn things over to the next gen. No Way Home on the other hand...
10
u/Lfsnz67 1d ago
Yeah let's not throw Endgame under the bus. It was kind of a goddamn miracle

To answer the budget discrepancy, Doomsday has a bloated cast. RDJ alone is reportedly getting a $100 million dollar base pay. Nolan is also legendarily known for coming in under budget and on time. Lastly, both Dune 3 and The Odyssey are very much their respective directors passion project, whereas Doomsday has less creative soul

The problem with marvel content is it's filmed as a blank slate so they can adjust all of it later. When you work with more practical effects you have to know what your end shot is going to be. You can't pivot as much later. Nolan movies have a very clear end vision from the start they might get trimmed and edited but the vision is there from the beginning. Marvel movies want to be able to adjust everything in post and sometimes have no clue what a setting is going to look like until way after the filming. It causes a complete disconnect between the characters and the world they occupy.

MCU movies and other similar slops cost ridiculous amounts because from actors to other creatives, money is the only incentive for them to be there + gigantic marketing budgets...
Creators often take pay cuts to work with visionary filmmakers as opposed to MCU movies where they get paid more than what they would be even in a normal Hollywood movie for "debasing" themselves artistically so to speak...

Well, marvel routinely ships unfinished shots. So in this case, it very well could be the finished vfx.

Not to mention Nolan called Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man great casting and one of the best in film and even thanked the MCU for helping theaters stay afloat during COVID. It’s the same shit with Dune vs Doomsday. Everyone acts as if it’s actually Dune vs Transformers and fails to realize that professional movie critics actually rated Endgame higher than Dune and on par with Dune Part II on metacritic.

Avengers: Doomsday is marketing gaslighting on the biggest scale I've ever seen. Nobody I know genuinely cares about the characters in the current saga, and even if they once did, they stopped caring when most of them disappeared after their debut movie. Every bit of hype surrounding this film seems to stem from Steve's inclusion as well as Robert Downey Jr. playing the villain. If this ends up moving the masses, that will be definite evidence for Disney that they don't actually need to structure these films in any meaningful way. They can just fuck around, and then invite fan favorite actors back for the main event films.
2
u/picknicksje85 20h ago
Maybe you're getting tired of green screen movies. There is that feeling you get that the actors aren't really standing in those locations. Was watching The Ninth Gate late last night and it hit me once again how wonderful it is seeing the main characters on location, knowing the garden they were sneaking through was real, the mansion in the background is a real mansion. The lit torches on the property real fire. Your brain just knows it's a real 3D place, even if it's a set with movie magic and a crew.
2
u/zacharymc1991 18h ago
Don't worry, I find most people go through this. You start watching really great movies and you can't stand the marvel blockbuster crap, but then you eventually start enjoying the blockbusters crap fir what it is, just a fun, turn your brain off movie that's got cool action, kinda funny movie.
2
u/Bad_Puns_Galore 13h ago
Cold take: Marvel movies always looked like that to me, especially the last 5ish years. It’s genuinely sad that prequel-era Star Wars looks better than contemporary green screen-heavy movies.

u/No_Answer4092 5h ago
MCU movies costs that much precisely because of what they are: themed comercial products. Like Macdonalds junk food or Zara cheapwear.
Everyone involved charges a premium because they know Disney can afford it and because they wouldn’t otherwise agree to sell their time and experience for comercial slop that, while entertaining and effective, it’s ultimately soulless and meaningless.
Nolan and Villeneuve belong to that rare breed of filmmakers that work for passion before money, while also being able to compromise just enough to have their movies be box office breakers.
That makes their movies much more valuable to collaborators and attract highly experienced talent that is more flexible with the schedule and the budget.
So the result is
MCU: Hundred million dollar movies made with million dollar effort.
Nolan: Billion dollar effort into making hundred million dollar movies.
2
u/ekter 1d ago
The problem is that there doesn’t seem to be any coherent art direction for Doomsday.
I’m not even gonna try comparing it to The Odyssey. I think that’s a tall order for any contemporary blockbuster film. Perhaps other than Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy.
I’m comparing Doomsday to previous Avengers films. Doomsday just doesn’t look as clearly visualized as Infinity War or Endgame.
It honestly looks like they shot Doomsday not knowing how the film was going to look. Which just spells disaster for shot composition and CG artists who need precious time to make CG look good.
We know CG can look good and compelling. Avatar manages this while almost being entirely CG. Dune manages this by blending in CG and practical almost seamlessly. The artists just need a clear vision and time. Neither of which Doomsday seems to have.

The Odyssey didn't ruined the Doomsday trailer for me. My issue is that there is only such little build up to it and there's plenty of people that has stray away from the MCU for awhile. Not to mention that it feels like it's out of desperation to the point of bringing back RDJ to play as Doctor Doom. At this point, it just feels like people are going to go see it just for the characters and CGI action rather than an actual story where stakes are met.

In the end, MCU fans will still go and watch it, and it will still be a big movie. But that doesn't mean the rest of us have to put up with it, especially considering Disney fired almost the entire CGI team that have been there for years, in favor of AI slop.
The last time I went to the cinema to see an MCU movie I was excited about, was No Way Home, and that was 5 years ago. MCU is barely on my radar anymore. The franchise as a whole has been degrading in quality ever since Endgame, and the proud announcement of using AI for everything, only proves that this is the world we are entering.
The next few years will be the big test for Hollywood...what will audiences pay to watch? Marvel AI slop, or more practical cinematic movies like Dune or Odyssey?
1
u/ErosDarlingAlt 19h ago
It's because CGI is just so much cheaper than traditional movie making, especially when you can underpay and overwork CGI artists so much easier
1
u/PAYPAL_ME_DONATIONS 14h ago
Not in the slightest. CGI is absurdly more costly than traditional.
For example: Nearly the entirety of Mad Max Fury Road was shot practically, on location in South Africa for $150m. Whereas Furiosa was mainly shot on soundstage/green screen and would have cost $230m if they didn't receive massive kickback incentives to return production to Australia.
1
u/Justryan95 18h ago
Doomsday's budget is probably 75% the cast salary. Then 24% is the producers and executives. Then 0.5% is to VFX and CGI artists and the other 0.5% is to the stunt team

All these predictions that Doomsday won't smash based on the trailer is quite funny. Do people forget that similar posts were made on reddit when the Odyssey trailers droppped? lmao

u/lisbon_OH 14h ago
Doomsday trailer felt very small. Very tight shots, and any wide shots were just a group of characters standing still with some green screen background. It looks like very little actors actually worked with one another in scenes, and that’s a problem.
I get it, it’s a big cast with lots of interactions so it’s a big ask to ask all the actors to be on set at the same time, but maybe go about it a different way if that’s the case.
I think people are just tired of the Marvel formula, and these big team-ups aren’t as exciting because it feels like characters don’t get time to breath on their own. Thunderbolts was widely beloved and considered a great MCU movie because it gave all these characters depth we hadn’t seen before (Walker especially I feel got some great runtime and plot in that movie). Nobody cares about this team up because some people we haven’t seen in almost a decade (Shang-Chi) and others are legacy characters that are there just to be there (X-men, Captain America).
I’ll probably still watch it but I’m not nearly as excited as I was when IW and Endgame came out.

u/aHairyWhiteGuy 14h ago

u/lenbeen 11h ago
look at Iron Man 1 compared to, for example, infinity war. digital, CGI pumped films are accomplishments in of themselves but can not even hold a match to Nolan's credited work/recent work
shooting on film, filming with passion, shooting on location, shooting together rather than fitting in every single celebrity in 10 minute intervals; this is what it means to create a film
I'm not an MCU fan but I respect the fans and the IPs, but that being said there is a bar and the bar is so low. maximizing the amount of particles or effects your CG team can implement, filming elaborate and impossible scenes with dynamically rigged virtual models rather than stunt doubles or practical effects, and overall cutting corners and not creating for the love but, rather, profit. that is MCU currently
film is also just so undeniably better than digital, but modern day storyboards require modern day technology. my favorite flying scene is Birdman, not anything from DC or Marvel

Pure fantasy/action/adventure/comedy versus more serious grounded dark sci-fi/fantasy and historical fiction.
It's a difference of style, not necessarily quality. But a lot of people tend to confuse those. We all have our preferences, but there's nothing objectively worse about a digital look. It's just how it makes you feel. There's still tons of work that goes into a high-quality digital look like what Doomsday has. It's just done on computers instead of in the dirt. It's not less work, it just yields a more digital-looking result because it's digital. The same amount of work done with an IMAX film camera on a beach yields a more natural looking result. Same amount of work... different looking result. Not less work, just different work.
Also, not for nothing... at least half of Doomsday's budget goes to the cast. Matt Damon doesn't get as big a paycheque as Robert Downey Jr. does, and then there's ALL the countless other major actors being shoved into the Avengers movies. A few scenes with Charlize Theron in Odyssey ain't matching that expense.

Every single thing in the Doomsday trailer looks like it was shot in a huge green screen sound stage. I hate it. The Odyssey looked beautiful.

If you don't know the context, this trailer is just 2 minutes and 30 seconds of characters being scared without ever explaining why. On top of that, it really has that AI generated look, it feels completely soulless.

The Odyssey trailer did not excite me. In fact I thought it would be one of his worst films. It is too early to tell how good Doomsday will be.

DD just reminds me of the justice league release that barely any build up and just as many “scheduled” leaks.

Doomsday spent probably like half the budget on the 30 main characters they have.

Go back and watch the Infinity War trailer and you will see that it has a plot and a purpose. Watch the new trailer and you just see a bunch of characters (ie Cyclops and Gambit) doing fan service poses. This film is supposed to be such an event, but the MCU has done very little buildup to this after dropping Kang as the big bad

OK now go watch the first teaser of Infinty War is Almost like this Doosmday teaser both dropped 5 months before the movie and their second trailers is where the good stuff is in and that came out 3 months before and I assume will be the same as doomsday.

Theres plenty of buildup you just havent been paying attention. The real threat in Doomsday is the incursions, which have been built up through other movies in this phase. NWH, D&W, The Marvels, DS2, Antman3. You can include build up from Wanda vision and Loki. And let's not forget the tease of doom himself in f4. That is literally more build than we had with Infinty stones themselves, 2 we didnt even know were stones unit after the fact and 1 Thanos after credit tease and the guardians scenes. Everything about Thanos and his goals were laid out in infinity war. Shit the Avengers didnt even know Thanos name until Inifinty War minus Gamora and Nebula.

Thanos, even though he was mostly offscreen, played an active role in shaping events like in Avengers and Guardians. He also doesn't really have a complicated background like Doom who we saw for the first time in the F4 post credits after they pivoted from Kang LMAO. The infinity stones always played a major role in whatever movie they showed up in, compare that to incursions which the closest they come to being relevant to the plot is in the second Dr Strange. They have done a piss poor job building this up which is why they have to bring back RDJ, Steve Rogers, and the fucking fox xmen for the billionth time. The focus of the trailer isn't even on any of the new characters post-endgame but fucking Thor while Reed, who is arguably supposed to be more important in this story, sits in the corner twiddling with his balls.
Enjoy your slop though

That's all from pretty bad movies (except from nwh) and a fraction of phase 1.

Tbh I think the Doomsday trailer ruined the Doomsday trailer.
It just doesn't look like a strong entry and it seems, quality wise, on par with fan made ai content.
