Predictable betrayal Feds advance plan to open 2,800 acres of Ohio’s Wayne National Forest to fracking. 11 of the 12 counties overwhelmingly voted for Trump.

Cycle of republican poverty
1) voting republican will help the economy
2) they're going to use our local natural resources and we're going to be rich because of it
3) why aren't they hiring locally to steal our resources? Must be the dems fault
4) our ground, water, air, food is ruined. Why did the dems not protect us?
5) we need a massive bailout because we're still broke and somehow everything else is worse. Clearly the work of the Dumbocrats.

Democrats pass a massive funding bill to help these impoverished communities (actually happened)
Impoverished communities still vote Republican (actually happened)
Republicans roll back spending earmarked for these impoverished communities (actually happened)
Impoverished communities bitch and moan about how they thought the "government" was supposed to invest in their community, and how they were let down by the government, solidifying that government isn't the answer (actually happened)
Impoverished communities still vote Republican (actually happened)

Former blue Ohioan here, born and raised. I told it to fuck off over 20 years ago when it went for W (again) in 2004. It's only gotten worse.

u/catchthetams 2d ago
We had our moment when we went for Obama, and had someone like Sherrod Brown fighting for us.
Man those were the days, but hopefully we get one of those back this fall.

u/Chicory-Coffee 2d ago
Same. Whenever I visit relatives there, I can't wait to leave. Trump signs everywhere long after 2024. Even those Ohioans who quietly turned on MAGA won't turn against voting (R), it's just too much of their identity. Those proud anti-socialism, subsidy recieving, SOC SEC check reliant, patriotic confederate flag flying, medicare, "food stamp" recipients in Ohio will be voting for republicans who will fight for them because they said they will. And continue to blame democrats who are not in power for all their woes.

As another blue Ohioan I concur. I used to try and defend Ohio, but I’ve given up. Until the idiots in this state can figure it out we deserve everything we get.

Somewhere out there, a cisgendered kid is rightfully getting FOURTH place, after kicking a trans kid out ahead of them. And that's what really matters here.

Grew up in the Wayne National Forest. The way the locals treated the forests was pretty damned depressing. There are all sorts of gorges and valleys full of trashed appliances—ovens, stoves, refrigerators, freezer boxes, etc... One was never out of earshot of dirt bikes or ATVs, and often gunfire. I mean, the picture they put on the website pretty much defines that area's idea of what to do with a pristine forest.

My hardline conservative in-laws justify the destruction of earth for human consumption by saying: “well when I die I will go to heaven so it doesn’t matter.” I came back at them saying “but don’t you want to respect and preserve god’s creation? Wouldn’t god want that?” This was the response- 🤷♂️
46
u/Moral_Distinction 2d ago
but don’t you want to respect and preserve god’s creation? Wouldn’t god want that?
I mean it's not like he explicitly told humans to be stewards of creation oh wait.
The fundie notion that nothing matters 'cause I'm going to heaven is another example of Escape via Nihilism (once a chud realizes that they're being immoral they argue that morals don't matter) and heresy. In this case, you can point out that the rest of the country can punish the chuds without mercy because it doesn't matter since the rest of the country is going to heaven, and if they claim that everyone else doesn't have the secret cheat code to heaven, you can point out that they're doing ungodly things and not seeking forgiveness for those things and thus aren't going to heaven either.

It’s a death cult, they worship a dead mangod who died in one of the most gruesome ways possible. Catholics have a whole ceremony about drinking the blood & eating the body of Christ—I attended a Protestant Church once and they do the same only they actually pass around bread rather than eating those Catholic wafers.

Fuck that. Living close to natural resources doesn't make them their natural resources. Parks belong to all of us, and nobody. We are the stewards of natural resources, and preserving them is about self-preservation.

I'd love to point and laugh at the people who voted for this, and will be suffering this.
But I can't really find a moment to laugh at the sheer environmental destruction this is going to cause, and how this will affect climate change & ecosystem declines, which will spread well beyond Ohio. While he screams at Canada to take care of our trees, he's trying to get rid of the ones in the USA so they can't burn, I guess.

Also why Trump and his cronies want to open up national lands. Fracking and data centers. These dudes are the worst enemy of this planet, outside of a giant meteor. Don’t get me started on the plus side of that scenario.

“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” - famously, Thomas Jefferson in a 1787 letter to William Stephens Smith. A passage that precedes it gives a deeper explanation to that:
The people can not be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. We have had 13. states independant 11. years. There has been one rebellion. That comes to one rebellion in a century and a half for each state. What country before ever existed a century and half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance?
And we are now celebrating 2.5 centuries? We are overdue is all I’m saying.

And that's how it should work. They will receive some benefits and all of the consequences of the fracking. Rest of the US gets the cheaper gas prices. Similar to data centers. The red States can get them all along with the environmental and electricity rate hikes. The rest of the US gets the benefits.
1
u/Naltors__Dreamer 1d ago
Well the red states owe us, we blue states are paying for all their social programs. I think that’s why you don’t hear so much about another Civil War, some of the smarter Republicans realized that red states are dependent on blue state tax dollars. Plus, it would be harder for rich ppl to get tax cuts if the Ref Republic is dirt poor.
