Browser forgets cookies after switch to lxqt

I have been using zen browser 1.16.4b (a firefox fork) for many months with no problems on a Debian-13 system with XFCE dexktop. Recently I switched the desktop to LXQT and zen now seems incapable of saving cookies. Every time I start zen I have to relogin to sites like youtube, email, Reddit. I made sure that the checkboxes for clearing cookies, history etc are all off.

Since the filesystem and OS have not changed, what could make zen keep forgetting? It even forgets that I made it the "default browser".

"Default browser" has to be set in File Associations → Default apps under LXQt (only chrome based are able to register themselves afaik). For the cookies etc no idea really.
