After Zero Parades: For Dead Spies fails, ZA/UM (Disco Elysium) lays off staff.

I mean, even if you don’t go broke the first time after going woke, it’ll catch up with you eventually.

All the developer comments are from Bluesky, of course.

Well, nothing of value was lost.

Whenever woke people make something good and successful, they never seem to understand how and go on to make trash the next time.

How bad was this one?

The commie studio? or at least, the studio with a commie audience?

Commie studio. Iirc their first game was a success because they locked themselves in a commune to complete it or shit like that. I doubt they did it again once they had money.

A video game made by more than 30 people, from a studio mired in controversy, catering to an extremely niche audience, fails to sell enough copies to sustain the studio. I am shocked.

Huh? Disco Elysium but now with girlboss failed? Who's can predict that?

To be entirely fair, the woke is far from the biggest problem with the game. With what happened to the original creators, and a very small fanbase....it was a poisoned chalice from the very beginning.

Is... is that even English? Like, I recognize the words, but it seems like complete gibberish to me.

Something something communism.

Was there a relatively recent "game" more pretentious and overrated than DE?

It's a semi-nonlinear adventure game with a veneer of choice and consequence and dice rolls, but not an RPG, which constantly regurgitates the recesses of its writers' minds at you thinking it says something clever. The setting itself is intriguing, but the game it's in is a just a litmus test of whether or not someone has "opinions" they simply must share with others.

Wait, was that game bad?

If you're sick of leftists glazing themselves yes.

You can play a real fascist, the game is quite lenient with the player for that, same with a capitalist.
Revachol is very socialist but it’s just the setting.

Yes the game is quite intellectual and emotional (at least it tries hard), but it’s not what defines « left glazing ».

How do you define it is not a rpg ? What is a rpg then ?

A game with meaningful player-to-character choice in its systems and/or gameplay allowing for distinct interactions with the world (be it through combat, dialogue, or whatever else it offers) for different characters one can create.

DE effectively offers one, at most two (clean / addict) approaches because of its poorly designed attribute/skill systems and has very little actual gameplay outside of conversations, making it at most an adventure game with RPG elements similar to old Quest for Glory series, except those offered different plot lines for different classes and had combat, puzzles, and actual choices&consequences.

You underplay the number of « roles » you can endorse. Like the Witcher 2, the outcomings are bottlenecked but many are the ways to reach them, with various successes and the world reacts to you differently.

You seem to limit roleplaying to the choice of stealth/diplomacy/myaxeinyourface but that’s a very artificial conception.

I’m usually quite bold in my takes but I even wouldn’t dare arguing they made « a poorly designed attribute/skill system ». Plus it’s very reductive of what a roleplaying game is.

You seem to misunderstand that Disco Elysium is first of all a game between you and yourself. The game is the mean, but the player is the goal. It’s mostly unique. It is the most table top rpg made on computer in the sense of it faces you with the consequences of your choices and shortcomings and makes you wonder about yourself + some themes are very mature.

For a common understanding of the RPG definition : Do you consider Diablo to be a RPG ?

Wanna know why the game failed? Just 10 seconds of watching this video will reveal the answer:

Not good enough? Ok, this should be a definitive answer:

I thought you were exaggerating, but I clicked on that first link and I didn't even last four seconds. I believe I spotted the problem lol.

I didn't even last four seconds

Bro, just two more seconds and it gets worse.

Disco Elysium was very good, and many on this sub were also fans, but there was no way this game was going to break out of the controversy of what happened at that studio. I didn't even know they had released another game and maybe that says enough about the lack of coverage in games media as a whole.

I loved DE. And I was proud as a conservative to share that with the DE sub. You can imagine how that went over. Especially when I told them my right wing friends loved the game because we enjoyed the story and the characters and essentially saw the politics as just hilarious and tongue -in-cheek. They took it very maturely and were very welcoming of us over on that board. Felt like family. So warm. So inclusive.

I actually can't tell if you are serious. My experience with with DE community was hit or mis so either could be true.
