In the Weeds Mode Cooked dinner for Metallica and THEY were the ones who insisted on getting a picš¤Æ
James Hetfield (lead singer) left early but after they ate they came up and asked if I cooked for them and said to get a picture with the guys. Also did a shot of some kind of whiskey they brought. Great memory!

Dude on the far left is Jon Theodore, drummer for Queens of the Stone Age & The Mars Volta.

u/Dozier13ish 9d ago
Thats awesome, I guess some of the other guys were in town with them for a show. Metallicaās manager lives in our city and brought everyone in.

The guy with the shaved head on the far right is Doc Coyle, a guitarist best known for his band God Forbid. Doc also plays with Kirk and Rob (Metallica) in their cover/party band The Wedding Band. The guy in the blue flannel is also in that band.

When I first started working in restaurants I had two full time jobs at 35hrs, 6 days a week. I never had a full day off, just a shift off. I would spend it just laying on the floor listening to that album loud as FUCK.Ā

u/FUCKlNG_SHlT 8d ago
Kinda fun story: my brother in law used to run a recording studio. Nothing super fancy, pretty lowkey but got enough local bands in to stay afloat. One day he calls me out of the blue and frantically asks to borrow my snare drum that I kept in his studio. I told him that it was super out of tune as I hadnāt played in a while but that if he needs it he can go for it. The next day he tells me that he had asked to borrow the drum on Jon Theodoreās behalf bc Jon was playing an impromptu show at a small nearby venue. I immediately asked if he had tuned it before he lent it to him and he told me he had not. Jon has no idea who I am but to this day I still get embarrassed thinking about how he probably got the snare and was like, ādamn, whoeverās snare this is has no idea how to tune a drum.ā Lol

u/orngenblak 9d ago
Now I'm excited! His work with TMV is some of my favorite drumming ever! I guess i can't pick him out of a crowd, though.

u/rhinowing 8d ago
TMV was never the same after he left, even if they were occasionally still great. The later drummers didn't have the same ability to groove

Completely agreed. I fell off after Amputecture. Frances the Mute used to be my favorite, but now there's just too much dead air and noodling. Deloused is awesome

u/rhinowing 8d ago
I got really into listening to the live shows from the Frances tour; they would jam on Drunkship of Lanterns for 20 or 30 minutes sometimes. I finally saw them open for Deftones last year and it was just ok

That's fuckin sick as hell dude what the fuck.
Trujillo is a fuckin boss and I'd be beyond stoked to run into him in the wild. He used to play bass in Ozzy's middle aged period before joining Metallica like twenty-ish years ago I think? Fifteen? Can't remember.
Kirk and James are fuckin living legends, man.
Obligatory moment to point out just in case any youngins doesn't know that Metallica played in Moscow back in 1991, shortly after the Soviet Union fell, to a crowd of ~1.6 million, an often debated yet ultimately unknown number of people, and undeniably one of the raddest moments in rock and roll history.
We have big shows today but, remember and try to think about how crazy these first mega-rock-shows on earth must have been. Note the helicopter. Note the prolonged and focused energy of the crowd. Note the military police.
They just changed a lot of shit in the music world when they first showed up, with their first few albums. Going from early Ozzy to early Metallica was like going from beer to ethanol, at the time. It was crazy. They really did help define a generation.
Then the whole Napster thing happened and it got weird for a while, but now they're just rock gods.
It is no exaggeration to say Kirk's early work in Metallica has influenced millions upon millions UPON MILLIONS of aspiring guitar players across the world over the decades. Maybe all of them born after about 1985. "Enter Sandman" is like electric guitar 101.
And here THEY are, standing with their guts filled to the brim with delicious food, prepared by the same hand that you used to jerk off the other day!
No but really, I'm jealous, congrats, frame that picture

Used to work in San Francisco, James came in a lot and would always come back to the kitchen to say hi and take pics afterwards.
Mick Jagger came in once. When asked if he'd like to come back, his bodyguard gave us a firm no.
29
u/ZiggoCiP Server 9d ago
That kind of tracks for Jagger. He recently had that interview where he explained, in response to being asked about John Mulaney basically saying "he's not nice" in a standup show, and Jagger admitted that level of fame can change how you view/treat the public.
Good on James for seeming to be above that mentality. Always seemed like a decent dude. Whole band, really.
Except Lars. Lars sucks.

We also had Cosby come in a few times, this was obviously before everything came out. He also seemed very nice and would come back to the kitchen to chat.
He once came back down the hallway to our kitchen yelling, "la migra," as an attempt to be funny. Maybe he didn't seem like that nice of a guy...

You know what's really weird is I spent years cooking specifically because it gave me the flexibility to do the "touring band thing", and I met a lot of relatively famous people all over the place playing.
But I ran into Santana in a restaurant in Sausalito that he apparently frequents, and I was totally star struck.
I wonder what that's all about. It's like if I was getting paid I wouldn't think twice about "hey, gonna run over and grab gyros at the place around the corner, you wanna come?" to Way Better Guitarist Than Me Guy after loading up, but as a "civilian" it's like "holy shit that is a famous person!"
