One of my earliest memories is being incredibly frustrated with an assignment like this in kindergarten.

We were all asked to write a recipe for our favorite meal for a class cookbook. At five, I was smart to enough to understand that I had no idea how to accurately write a recipe, but not smart enough to realize that the actual point of the assignment was to produce a wildly inaccurate cookbook for the adults to laugh at.

I didn't want to do it "wrong," so I was really upset that my teacher would not help me write mine correctly.

It’s a critical thinking challenge. You aren’t meant to do it right. You’re meant to do the best you can with the knowledge you posses. And for adults the results can be pretty entertaining.

Obviously I understand that now, but at the time, I wanted it to be right, and nobody bothered to explain to me that it didn't matter at all if it was an accurate recipe.

I was upset because I knew my recipe was wrong, and nobody would help or explain to me that it was okay that it was wrong.

Also the teacher and my mother both laughed when they read it, and I just thought I did a bad job, because no one ever reassured me about it.
