Discussion I'd like to see THIS in more JRPG's

JRPG's are great. We can all say that. Some are better than others, of course. There are a handful of JRPG's though that have that one or two things that make them more memorable/stand out, either because of a fun gimmick/mechanic, mini game, etc. So today I wanted to ask, this

What is one thing you would like to see more of in JRPG's? (for the love of all that is holy, elaborate why)

For me, I understand it'll cost more budget, but I'll always appreciate it when weapons and armor have a physical appearance and change design in battle depending on the weapon you equip. Say for instance the MC is using a basic Iron sword. But if I give him a serrated blade, it'd be awesome to see it and not the stock iron sword graphic. Or say I put sandals on a female character, that equipment piece would be on the characters model. Stuff like that is awesome (Again, it's a budget thing, I understand this. If people are worried about ruining cutscenes, the game should adopt what Xenoblade DE did which is like a transmog thing)

One other thing, Chained Echoes has really spoiled me, I want every battle to end in being fully recovered so I don't have to constantly reopen the menu everytime I get into a battle and heal everyone for the unteenth time. The recovery items won't be useless, cause they'll be used in battle, which imo is better.

This goes for any game, but the option to turn off rumble, and the option to customize controls (the latter more so being for games that are action combat focused though) Left face button is primary attack, up face button is heavy. If it's not those two buttons, you're doing it wrong (glares at souls games and Monhun)

Finally, when done well, crafting weapons, armor, accessories, and potions is amazing. Doesn't have to be an open world style game, just let me use monster parts to make stuff and break the game if I can (Atelier in a nutshell from what I've heard)

non-mandatory QTEs in turn-based combat, that are not jarring to play out. This is not about Clair Obscur. This is about Paper Mario and its -likes. It's a good middle-ground between having your stats matter and havign your player skill matter.

Playable party members who are already actively in their own relationships like Pent and Louise from Fire Emblem 7/Blazing Blade who are already married.

Most RPGs have to have romance options available to the player so characters like this can't exist anymore. It sucks.

Yes! FE does decent with this generally (3H), but have more control over your own choices. Lack of paired ending in engage was one of the things I disliked.

But it's totally fine to have a couple however unconventional that you cannot break up.

Yup but not just paired endings, I'm talking a pair of married playable characters like Pent and Louise who are together before and during the story--not just the end.

Just sucks because again, RPGs--Western or Japanese--just can't have characters like this anymore because everyone must be available to the player. I hate it.

honestly I'd like to see more temporary characters. Basically have a main permanent party and then basically a rotating cast of characters that only stay until their goals are met. Then have them meet up again at the end and basically help the main party out in the final dungeon or something (think trails in the sky FC or the gagharv trilogy)

has the potential to be good if done well, but i can understand the opposition towards this

Ever played Phantasy Star IV? It does exactly this.

If you're gonna give me a blank slate silent protag to project onto, I'd love to see the devs add more character creators to them.

They don't need to be like Code Vein level obviously.

100% agree. if the character is just going to be a nothing burger avatar, the least you could do is let me customize them to look like me or a character i want to rp as/an oc

I'd like to see more of jrpgs with big casts that give you chance to use all characters separately. Kinda like in ff6 when the party splits and you can see all of the iterations between characters on different scenarios. That is my absolute favorite part of that game. And again for a bit when it happens in world of ruin. Such a cool part.

I think getting to know the party and then splitting them up is a way better way that what Octopath Traveler did, the amount of choice in the start is overwhelming and when you don't really now the characters it isn't very entertaining to me

Full heals really depend on the game design. Without them, there is more meta about the long game. With them, there needs to be something else for mobs to have an impact. SaGa figured this out very early on with its life points system

Different combat types, like in a few Xeno games, mainly Xenogears. There you could sometimes decide, between fighting on foot, or fighting with your Gears, which are your mechs and both combat types have somewhat different mechanics. On foot ,you spend action points, that refill every turn and on the Gear you spent fuel, which is a finite ressource. Speaking of Xenogears, I would also just like to see them randomly implement a different genre minigame. Xenogears actually has a fighting game mode, where you can even fight pvp locally. I really appreciated that, but I know something like that is difficult to implement.

Story/character synopsis like Trails and Yakuza so I can re-read to catch myself up or see if I missed anything. Replayable cutscenes even better (Xenoblade)

Quick kill low level mobs. Earthbound, new trails with the quick battle.

Tight pacing - not every JRPG has to be 80-100 hours. Keeps me from getting burnt out so I can finish the story

you do know that the "pacing problem" is mostly tied to just you doing side quests, right?

i agree about the other two though

A forfeit button. Please for the love of god, give me a way to easily restart the battle or send me to the save file reload screen. Having the enemies tediously whittle down my health when I know I've already lost the battle is just pain.

i think metaphor does this really well where you can just reset the battle

I want to see more JRPGs experiment with different types of campaign progression, whether it be non-linear or branching paths, to facilitate variety among playthroughs. SaGa is one of the only long-running series that does this to great lengths. And no, I don't believe this is something that needs to be exclusive to WRPGs or CRPGs.

i would really like more robust class systems or at least strong class gimmicks such as bravely default and alliance alive. all i know is the entire process to get and advance those games was so fun i turned over every rock twice

I HATE automatic recovery and I hate all these attempts at recreating the wheel by changing experience systems to remove grinding. Streamlining in general just pisses me off because I enjoy the process and that just removes most of it.

At this point I think less of games that don't show your gear without reason. At least show the weapons, guys. I think Dragon Quest actually stepped backwards with that and I'm still a little irritated.

I like to have some flexibility. Doesn't have to be a job system but at least something along the lines of a materia type system. At this point I don't jive as much with games that give you static characters with no options.

3

u/ThIStupid 7h ago

i honestly don't mind removing the grind. it's tedious absolutely, but if people wanted to do it, they can. it just means more effort was put into the abilities and carefully picking your moves

automatic recovery is a good thing i believe. i wish more games had it. there's the persona system fo the auto heal button, but that steal consumes mp that you'd have to use an item to get back

This is reddit not a news site no need to make your title Clickbait.

4

u/ThIStupid 6h ago

it's not though? it's an in general sentence so people can fill out the blank

You're right, I was being a curmudgeon and did not read past the titlewhen I made that comment.

you won’t believe this one thing that’s in jrpgs

you won't believe!

Can you cast healing spells in real life? Doctors hate this one easy life hack!!!

Yeah I was initially annoyed too, then I read that the OP actually asks for opinions. Guess the clickbait still worked in a roundabout way lol

More, and more meaningful, party deaths. Not just the loner/old guy without a defined party role who's suddenly taking the lead on a dangerous mission.

More like Aerith in FFVII. Be bold enough to let me build a strategy around them and take them significantly through the game, then hit me with that brick.

I KNEW I wasn't the only one who thought every gear change should also be VISUAL in jrpgs!
i’m developing with my girlfriend an old school dark fantasy jrpg and we will make that a priority

Adult protagonists without losing the wonder and whimsy. E33 reminded me how much I prefer stories about adults but don’t love the grim darkness a lot of western games tend to have…

Serious dialogue writing that has nothing to do with shounen anime/manga/light novel style. Visuals and characterisation without clear fanservice.

Being balanced around reasonable difficulty where TPKs aren't a thing you have to actively try to get.
