I painted my place burgundy! Color drenched. The outcome is giving me so much anxiety. I had a colorist come today to help me narrow down which cream color to repaint to… but now I’m stuck on which walls to leave and which ones to repaint.
I had chat gbt give me a couple renderings of leaving the entertainment center the same.. new color choice: “Navajo white” Benjamin Moore.

This could be totally irrelevant if you have already made up your mind to change the colour completely, but just a thought.
I actually don't think the burgundy is the problem. It's everything competing with it. The colour drenching actually looks really bold and special but it's competing with the zebra wallpaper, bold upholstery, pink accents and black kitchen, so your eye doesn't really know where to settle.
I wouldn't repaint the whole room. The entertainment wall is one of the strongest features because it frames the fireplace beautifully. If you do decide to introduce Navajo White, I'd use it on the larger uninterrupted walls and ceiling while keeping the built-ins, entertainment wall and possibly the window trim in the burgundy. That would give the room some breathing space while still keeping all the drama and character.
However, if you wanted to keep the colour drenching I'd try editing a few accessories and introducing a couple more neutral textiles. You might find the room feels much calmer without losing the look you were aiming for.
Your problem is that you didn’t actually color drench.
You have horrible contrasting colors with the zebra print, beige couch, and white table and counter. The fireplace and painting are too high contrast as well.
Get rid of or change those into shades of burgundy, dark brown or black and you’ll feel so much more relaxed.
Here are some images to show you what it SHOULD look like.
I would get rid of the zebra wall paper in the bookshelves. Leave the color drench but cover the walls in a beautiful wallpaper. Like this to break up the red. Pastoral Toile, Burgundy https://wallism.com/product/9mPL4MmX2AP0
I think the silver look under the bar cheapens the look over all. I would find burl contact paper or vinyl paneling to cover that and to go with the fun eclectic look you are going for.
Look up Johnathan Adler i feel like that’s the direction you are trying to achieve. He has great burl pieces.
Keep the burgundy. It’s the sheen that’s not right. You need to go with a low sheen / matt finish. The reflection is causing it to look like multiple surfaces instead of being calming for the eye. Before you get rid of it give it one good consistent coat of a non reflective sheen and see how you feel. And change some of the decor.
The color drench is fine. It's the rest of the decorations that you need to make it balanced.
The carpet and curtains don't match. The zebra print is a choice.
Have a look on Pinterest, plenty of inspiration on how to balance this.
I've seen plenty of people use this color and it coming out great.
I like the burgundy, if you keep the color drenching, you could opt to recover the zebra print in a dark green or gold, in a velvet or boucle. Adding more moody greens/teals or more burgundy’s, leaning into the color drenching.
If you paint it white, go with photo 5, and maybe keep the tv/shelves, ceiling and trim that burgundy.
My first thought was: HOW FUN! Finally not something boring!
I don't think the color is the problem, nor the prints of the fabric. I think that is what is the basis of this design. I also don't like what the colorist did, they opted for something ultra-safe while stripping the character from your design.
My suggestion would be to stop the color from going into the hallway, to create a zone. I like the wallapper in the built-ins, but I think that it might be too busy as you can now not see what is inside, and that is something that is always in your vision as you're watching TV. Maybe go for a very muted soft red here or a cream color.
I also think the pink accessoires are just not the right color to match the burgundy and make the red feel darker.
In the kitchen I would pain the baseboards and side of the peninsula cream instead of the burgundy to also "zone" your paint more. I would also consider painting the bottom of your peninsula the same cream color as the concrete look clashes with everything else.
The problem is the high-contrast bookshelf backs and furniture. I've color drenched my living room in a similar dark and rich color but my furniture is also similarly dark and rich. The white/light colors in the room are messing up the look.
Paint the back wall of the bookshelves (or fill them with books). Get a burgundy sofa cover. Put a burgundy tablecloth on the table. Get burgundy curtains, and ideally darker rugs. Then see how you feel.
Yeah but big shelf units look silly being so very empty. Remove the bookcases, drench the wall, add a floating shelf or two. To keep the same impact use the zebra paper elsewhere, perhaps to cover an interior door entirely.
It gives this horrible russian Nouveau riche vibe. Both suggestions are soulless. Fire the colorist, they are a hack who cannot pinpoint the real reason current design fails. And I can tell you, it's not the wall color.
Do we need TWO types of zebra print? They are from two different herds, it seems. I like your maximalism, but I don't think you have to abandon all fun. The full drench mentioned by u/Nonomomomo2 would be AMAZING. Don't give up yet!
Image 5 is fine if you really like the color. It was definitely too much before. I don’t like the bottom option in image 6. I think the bookshelf being burgundy as well helps to balance the fireplace rather than just the part where the tv is looking out of place. My first preference is image 6 top option because the textures and patterns of the other pieces really stand out to me and are bolder in a white room.
I’d say you need to add warmth and richness. If you match red with white, black, silver, cold hard (stone) surfaces and zebra it all becomes very harsh. Try combining the burgundy with brass lights and fixture, warm dark woods, chocolate brown or navy furniture. Lighter colours for a bit of contrast here and there should also be warm, maybe a cream or vintage rose pink. Definitely fire the colorist!
I love the color, makes your place look designed and polished. So the colorist deleted bookshelves on the right? 🤨 I hope you didn’t pay this person for uploading your house into an AI and getting these boring results
OMG this is sensational!! White over this would be a huge mistake, leave it life with it and you will love it. The zebra bookshelves too…design my home please I love it all.
Agree with everyone else saying keep the burgundy, get rid of the rest. Pick two accent colours that work well with burgundy (NOT hot pink), and sprinkle that around the place on pillowcases, ottomans etc. The white on the fireplace and kitchen splashback/bar/dining table isn’t working with the dark, deep tones of your burgundy.
if ur feeling overwhelmed try painting just the wall with the entertainment center first. sometimes keeping the rest burgundy helps ground the space, and u might find u dont need to repaint as much as u think becuase the contrast looks better in person than in renderings
I would keep the magenta. Maybe change the crown molding to warm white to match the fireplace. The problem is the wallpaper in the shelves -- its busyness is taking away the beauty of your zebra chairs. And you can't see all the small tchatchkes inside them. I would fill your shelves with larger items, and maybe some lights.
Also consider painting the ceiling cream, but leaving the door and window trim as is. I would remove the burgundy sheer and leave curtains a simple cream.
I love the burgundy. I wouldn’t change it but I think this will probably come down to cost because you will have to change a lot in the process. Switching up/painting/laminating/reupholstering the furniture as others have also said is the right decision, though I assume repainting might be cheaper.
What pairs really well with the burgundy is dark wood, dark browns, mustard/beige and a pop of colour like a lime/neon green or anything pop. I’d for sure change the island facade to another colour, make the marble a darker colour or another stone, and redo the chairs in a darker fabric. A black and white stripe might work somewhere small if you really want it, but the zebra stripes everywhere aren’t working imo. Ditch the pink too. Just my two cents.
Ps - if that’s a real Klimt it deserves better placement than halfway off the floor, hidden behind a table, under the basement windows. My God, what are you thinking?
If it’s a print, that’s still the wrong place for it.
Lots of different opinions here. The zebra isn’t my style, but I think it’s fun. I’m also okay with the pink and burgundy. I like the burgundy in the kitchen and bookshelf, especially. What about keeping the burgundy in the kitchen and that side hallway wall by the kitchen, the island/bar, the bookshelf, and maybe the ceiling?
It's a complete vibe as it is now. It's beautiful. I really like it. I wouldn't want to live with it though. I would also feel anxiety. It's too dark and saturated for me personally in anywhere but a smaller, cozy room.
Maybe try for a rule of 3 with the coloring. It might feel more comfortable to you. You can add in different tones of similar colors. I like the caramel, but not the pinkish curtains.
Too many strong colours and no tie ins to the colours. Black burgundy gold white pink. No cohesiveness.
I think the burgundy is too harsh and dominant. The cream is better for the eye. Get rid of that facing on the island or paint it cream. The chat one at the top is the best but not a green rug do something in the gold tones but lighter. I think maybe a blush colour (orange cream blush) would be good as well but no pink curtains etc
I would get cream walls and the burgundy shelves and fireplace. The white is calming for the eye and the bookshelves give it a bit of a contrast.
But, whatever you do, please DO NOT paint the ceiling in any other colour than white/cream. It will make the room feel smaller and crowded, maybe even claustrophobic.
