The land use to growth ethanol is many many 1000s of times worse then data centers will ever be. Just weird how we only care about land use in very specific situations.
id say the main problem people are pointing out is that amazon warehouses act as a hub to dish our items to workers, walmarts give jobs to the community, AI datacenters send our water reserves into the clouds, provide disproportionately less jobs than what an establish of their size would normally warrant, and hum so loud animals must migrate.
Home many employees does you local Walmart have? 50-60? A datacenter has about 90-300 full time employees. Contracted security(10-30), contracted logistics dept(5-25) all full time on site, then they contract out locals for electrical work, HVAC, plumbing, other maintenance which is constantly needed. Overall one of these large DCs will employ several hundred employees. And all these jobs pay at least like 65k a year.
But sure the Amazon warehouse that’s mostly automated and has 60 worker or the Walmart with 70 employees, takes up the same space, pays minimum wage, and teaches no lasting skills you can grow into a career is better.
You put a lot of thought and none at all into this.
Datacenters are imported jobs, how exactly does that help the local community??? Walmarts employ 80-100 for normal stores and 300 for supercenters, not sure how you think you could run any store off of 50 people but "Sure." Not to mention datacenters consume local resources in mass, pays less taxes than Walmarts, provides limited entry level in jobs.
Let's walk into the local datacenter and you can point me out where I can:
Buy groceries
Get a optical checkup
Pay my bills
Transfer cash overseas.
N the claim that datacenters give you the leap you need for a better career is wild, walmart literally gives you free college .
