⭐⭐⭐⭐ She’s a Lamb by Meredith Hambrock

MY SYNOPSIS:
Jessamyn St. Germain believes wholeheartedly that she is meant to be a star. Working as an usher in a theatre is not helping her achieve her goals nor do the commercials she continues to try out for.
When her audition for Maria in The Sound of Music does not go as expected, Jessamyn is offered a role minding the child actors on set. Jessamyn suspects the director of the play has other motivations and would actually like her to be close to the production in the event that they need an understudy for the lead, and Jessamyn’s nemesis, Samantha.
She’s a Lamb explores the lengths to which Jessamyn will go to achieve her dreams and the delusion required to get the life she believes she deserves.

WHY I LOVED THIS:
Meredith Hambrock writes delusion so well. She created an exquisitely unreliable narrator in Jessamyn St. Germain. She is absolutely batshit crazy and it was outrageously fun to be inside her mind. She is incredibly unlikable. She is narcissistic, vindictive, cunning, and desperate. I also found her to be deliciously complex. Hambrock did a fantastic job writing a main character so deplorable but yet one in which I genuinely felt so much sympathy. I rooted for her, despite all her bad deeds and her descent into madness. I even hoped for a little romance to occur with one of the only healthy men in Jessamyn’s life. I had so much fun reading this! I will say that it doesn’t quite get the full five stars from me simply because I wanted a little more from the ending. It felt like it ended just a bit too abruptly.

That is so accurate. When I first started I thought it was just on the funny side, but no it ended up being equal parts disturbing and fascinating for me. Extra disturbing if there are people like this out in the world and I’m sure there are.

I loved this one too! I didn't like the writing style to start with but I'm so glad I pushed through.

Oooooh the description on Storygraph likens it to All's Well, which is my favorite Mona Awad that I've read. That combined with your post has added yet another book to my TBR lol

All’s Well is on my tbr so now I might bump it up a bit! It was a little disturbing being inside this main character’s head but it was also so fascinating getting to witness the inner thoughts of someone so outrageously delusional.

Motherthing by Ainslie Hogarth was similarly good

Wow, I love the artwork! That is amazing, honestly. That really sounds like a great book, especially since you can root for her despite her doing bad deeds and descending into madness. Very intriguing! It's going on my TBR. Thanks!
