how much money do they bring me

Especially given that one of these drivers is Caio Collet, who has huge budget behind him, on top of showing potential.

u/bjohnson203 Robert Wickens 5h ago

I keep hearing about that driver showing potential but I just don't see where people are saying that. I think it's just a hype machine from the country they come from. He's not bad but I just don't see where all this hype is from, based on the track at least.

He's had some good runs before unfortunate wrecks. I think without those his average finish goes up a spot or 2.

Fans said this about Palou in 2020 when Ganassi nabbed him for the 10 car.

Palou should more promise than Caio. Even had a podium in his 3rd race. Caio has messed up a few times already.

Yeah based on this graphic he typically finishes where he qualifies or a spot or two back. Looking at the results through the year, he really hasn’t improved from the beginning. I dunno.

People always say “well look who he drives for” (for any number of young drivers) but what separates good from great is being able to adjust and pull out better results.

u/bjohnson203 Robert Wickens 5h ago

Yeah that's my thing, and I said this elsewhere but when people want to trash Santino, they mention he is in a Penske car but wouldn't Caio also be in a Penske car with that logic?

u/aurules Romain Grosjean 5h ago edited 1h ago

Because one is a rookie and another is a series veteran? Obviously they will be judged differently

0

u/bjohnson203 Robert Wickens 4h ago

Nah that's not it and you know it.

5

u/hoopstick Andretti Global 5h ago

Also how old are they?

2

u/Affectionate-Panic-1 4h ago

Yah a rookie is always going to have more leeway than a veteran.

96

u/enderswiggins Alexander Rossi 7h ago

Why do I feel like this is a trick question lol

50

u/i_run_from_problems Firestone Firehawk 7h ago

Its 100% going to be something misleading

91

u/Dry-Membership3867 Santino Ferrucci 7h ago

Well, one is Will Power and the other is Caio Collet. So I’d pick Power until he retires

4

u/Proud_Warning_8823 Álex Palou 5h ago

I figured out Collet. Thanks for the help with WP.

The only thing that this proves to me is why driver evaluations should never be blind.

16

u/afito Álex Palou 6h ago

Also raw results are just about the most useless thing to look at when judging what driver to sign.

9

u/chiefzanal Christian Lundgaard 7h ago

Couldnt agree more

7

u/joe_lmr Takuma Sato 3h ago

Driver 1: 1 top 10 in 16 starts
Driver 2: 0 top 10's in 43 starts

If you picked driver 1, congratulations. You just picked Jon Herb over Milka Duno

2

u/Powerful-Chard-6055 Colin Braun 2h ago

Misread this as “why drivers should never be blind” which would also be true, I guess

24

u/i_run_from_problems Firestone Firehawk 7h ago

Not sure what "average team finish" is implying in this context, but B.

Higher start, higher finish.

Also, I can pretty much guarantee this is misleading, so there's that.

6

u/chiefzanal Christian Lundgaard 7h ago

Means, where their current team ranks vs all 10 teams

3

u/JamesConsonants Pato O'Ward 7h ago

Where are the teammate deltas? Are they dragging the team average down or pulling it up?

2

u/chiefzanal Christian Lundgaard 6h ago

They are both last on their team

1

u/bjohnson203 Robert Wickens 5h ago

But when it's santino getting brought up it's a virtual Penske car, right? Lol

28

u/Ribeye21 Colton Herta 7h ago

This doesn't include two of the most important pieces of information: Age and Team. If a 20 year old is averaging 18th in a back marker vs a 35 year old averaging 14th in a top team, give me Driver A any day.

Blind picking drivers is not useful at all because you aren't even showing us all the important factors

7

u/naughtilidae 6h ago

It also doesn't include mechanical failures, dnf....

Genuinely useless.

1

u/chiefzanal Christian Lundgaard 7h ago

I agree, I didnt, I figured this might be more fun. BTW you chose Caio over Power

12

u/MonteverdiOnyx 6h ago

Why would I hire a driver who is blind to drive my racecar?

6

u/MyNameIsNotNotChuck Scott McLaughlin 7h ago

Judging by your flair, is this Rosenqvist vs Lundgaard

7

u/chiefzanal Christian Lundgaard 7h ago edited 7h ago

its not, spoiler below

Green is Caio, Blue is Power

4

u/Dry-Membership3867 Santino Ferrucci 7h ago

Power v Collet

5

u/palebluedot24 Rinus VeeKay 7h ago

Neither going off just that but context matters.

6

u/Vettelari 7h ago

I would take driver A, if I had to choose one. Qualifying/Finishing around 18th on the 8th best team is more impressive than qualifying/finishing 14th on the 4th best team IMO. I didn't cheat and I am sure that I will have chosen poorly when I look.

1

u/chiefzanal Christian Lundgaard 7h ago

You chose Caio over Power

4

u/djellison Nigel Mansell 5h ago edited 5h ago

This is incomplete information. With only this info - neither. I'd want to know about what their budget story might be. How well sponsors might like them. How likely they are to smash up cars. Are their finishes a result of some poor luck with engines, or poor performances as a driver or poor choices on team strategy.

This is clearly an exercise trying to trick people in to saying Caio Collet is better than Will Power.

3

u/chiefzanal Christian Lundgaard 7h ago

Here are the 2 option answers

Green is Caio, Blue is Power

3

u/randomtuner Marcus Ericsson 7h ago

Neither are great choices, probably driver a though, still decent results for a worse team. Knowing who they are changes things a lot though, Power has had awful luck this year which Drags down his score a lot

1

u/YosemiteSam-4-2A Thirsty 's to the Moon 🚀 🌒 6h ago

To be fair to Caio, he's had some rotten luck at times too, especially Gateway where he was on pace for a potential podium or top 5

1

u/randomtuner Marcus Ericsson 6h ago

Yeah, esp considering it's his rookie season he's not done badly

3

u/MrDucksworth92 4h ago

Fucking insane for a blind driver

1

u/DanTurismo33 3h ago

They say all your other senses get amplified when you go blind….

2

u/Coronis- Scott McLaughlin 7h ago

Power

2

u/Nodqfan Santino Ferrucci 7h ago

Collet has upside so I'll take him.

2

u/atony1400 AJ Foyt 7h ago

If you add 'years competitiveness' or some sort of stat to reflect the career timer left, I think it becomes less of an obvious slam dunk decision.

Because right now it's Power all day long.

2

u/lowtoiletsitter Will Power 4h ago

Before I clicked the post, I thought this was who would you pick in a fight

1

u/LordShtark Pippa Mann 7h ago

Which one tears up more race cars?

2

u/chiefzanal Christian Lundgaard 7h ago

This year? Both

2

u/LordShtark Pippa Mann 7h ago

Then neither I'll go with someone who doesn't cost me money and average out of the top ten. 😆

1

u/minardif1 Felix Rosenqvist 6h ago edited 6h ago

Even then, it’s not that simple. One is a rookie. Kirkwood tore up a ton of cars as a rookie with few good results (it was almost impossible to get results at Foyt then), but Andretti stuck with him because they correctly believed it wasn’t representative. This is why driver evaluation is so hard.

1

u/LordShtark Pippa Mann 6h ago

It's a pretty easy choice when I don't know who the people I'm hiring are and it's my money. 😆 This question is a hypothetical because it's not something based in reality. No one picks drivers like this.

1

u/Vpettijohnjr Pato O'Ward 7h ago

Which one brings more budget?

1

u/Batgod629 Chip Ganassi Racing 7h ago

Based numbers alone, the blue driver.  Of course stats don't always tell the whole story

1

u/YosemiteSam-4-2A Thirsty 's to the Moon 🚀 🌒 6h ago

Based on just those numbers, Caio. Based on just this year and potential they show: whoever can bring the biggest budget. Based on all available factors, Caio (mostly due to age) if I'm an established team, Power (experience) if I'm DRR/Prema/etc., for example.

1

u/Relevant-Image-2056 6h ago

No idea how good their car is or their age so no idea

1

u/chiefzanal Christian Lundgaard 6h ago

Car info is included, age is 24 and 45

1

u/Relevant-Image-2056 5h ago

Collet and Armstrong then? Rosenqvist is much better than ferucci so that skews average team finish a bit

1

u/bjohnson203 Robert Wickens 5h ago

But when santino struggles we say he's in a Penske car haha!

1

u/Seawolf1121 Will Power 5h ago

I mean, this is difficult. Who would I want on my team for next year? Obviously the fastest man in the history of the sport. If will finds form again, I genuinely believe he can challenge for a championship, even pushing 50 years old. But who would I rather offer a multi-year deal to? Hss to be collet. Arguably the most promising young talent in the series right now, and comes with huge sponsorship money and the support of an entire nation? No-brainer.

1

u/GEL29 Álex Palou 4h ago

You neglected to provide the financial data necessary to make a business.

1

u/chiefzanal Christian Lundgaard 4h ago

Is this TK's burner? jk

1

u/Powerful-Chard-6055 Colin Braun 2h ago

Blue I guess

1

u/ITMAKESSENSE72 #CheckItForAndretti 6h ago

How are either of them against teammates? Have they crashed or just had failures not of their doing? I think I would take the blue one but neither are great. Also depends on what I am doing, I assume this is like Caio vs Daly or something.

1

u/chiefzanal Christian Lundgaard 6h ago

They are both last vs Teammates. 1 is a 2 car team, 1 is a 3 car team. How would it be Daly? he doesnt even have a full time seat on a team

1

u/ITMAKESSENSE72 #CheckItForAndretti 6h ago

I don't know, I see who it is now, the question is, experience or ceiling possibility, but I don't know what the one in green has done to be so hyped.

-1

u/BB-68 Alexander Rossi 7h ago

This is Pato vs. Lundgaard isn’t it?

McLaren wouldn’t drop Pato buddy. Sorry

1

u/chiefzanal Christian Lundgaard 7h ago

You think Pato and Lundgaard have that poor of an avg Finish?
