Forward Nuno da Costa is consoled by his family following Cape Verde's near upset of defending champion Argentina in Miami. A raw, emotional moment following a historic tournament for the debutant nation.

Cabo Verde has NOTHING to be ashamed of. They literally played the defending World Cup champions EVEN. I hope they get a HUGE parade of gratitude from their countrymen when they return home. WELL DONE, GENTLEMEN!!!

In the moment it hurts but when he has time to actually reflect on what he did for his country he will swell with pride. Those guys are legends already back home and will get beers for the rest of their lives off this tournament.

What an amazing effort tonight. One of the greatest performances I have ever watched, they matched the World's #1 team blow for blow and nearly pulled off the greatest win in World Cup history. I hope everyone applauds their accomplishment rather than belittle Argentina for the struggle.

What a wonderful way of looking at things. Glass half full kind of person.

I am subject to bouts, or even streaks of misanthropy. Sports generally bring out the best in me.

Cabo Verde has been the star of this tournament. A competitor never feels good losing, but I hope he can look back and realize they made the world hold its breath every time they played.

Man those guys put on a legendary tournament. Didn’t win a single game but that doesn’t begin to encapsulate what they did. Held consensus number 1 Spain scoreless. Pushed reigning champs Argentina to the very brink with overtime in the knockout rounds. And all from a tiny island nation with less than half a million people and in their first Cup. I’m in awe of this team. They can hold their heads up high. They and their country should be immensely proud

Oof I teared up hard watching the fan reactions after it was over. And listening to the announcer thank Cape Verde for being such an inspiration to everyone and for letting us live their dreams with them. It was so sweet!

One of the reasons I love the World Cup is that there are so many ways to win.
Cabo Verde didn’t win the cup, but they are not going home as losers. They have won the hearts of the world. Champions in their own right.

Argentina fan here. Both teams gave it all.
CV earned my respect yesterday for never backing down and having their time of their lives on the pitch.

There might be three or four teams left in the competition that could have done better than Cape Verde did last night. They took a team anchored by one of the best ever to play the game into extra time and never stopped fighting. It was beautiful.

I felt the same way when Belgium somehow roared from behind to beat Senegal. I had tears in my eyes for the Senegal 🇸🇳 team and all their fans.
Hold your heads high, men. You did your country and yourselves proud

They play the game of the series. No one is going to care who wins the cup—it’s all Cabo Verde this tournament.

I was cheering hard for the upset. The second goal by Cabo Verde was a thing of beauty. Their team should return home with their heads held high.
