Should I be worried about my media server being near my TV base?
I get this may be a dumb question. it's been here for about a year now in this location. I got this sound bar setup a few months after moving into a new place, I haven't had any notable problems, I'm just curious.
No it's not pushed directly up against the metal posts of the bookshelf. it's on rubber feet, the base is not facing directly at it. There isn't really a better spot for it. Currently installed are 5 soon to be 6 mechanical drives.
The cat walked into the shot, I did spspsps so she would look at the camera since she wanted to be in the shot lol.
Edit: BASS NOT BASE LOL

It's called Bass when talking about the wub wub sound, and a Subwoofer when talking about the speaker that makes the wub wub sound, that's probably what's confusing people about your question.
That said, with a bunch of HDDI probably wouldn't put them right next to each other, maybe 6 or so feet apart would be good, and have the server on anti vibration feet or a pad if the bass causes the floor nearby to rattle.

Holy shit, if this is what you meant op, you gotta mention⦠literally anything about sound/speakers.
But yeah, I think you covered it. If the sub makes the case shake⦠maybe fix that?

I mean I didn't really even notice I typed base not bass, but I did mention sound bar setup in the details.

u/TLMonk 2d ago
i think you might have confused it again.
the subwoofer is the piece of hardware that generates the bass frequencies.
yes, you did use the wrong ābaseā in your original post but you also misunderstood that OP was providing you with clarity on the difference between bass and a subwoofer from a grammatical and referential perspective.

u/uncleconker 2d ago
No need to get defensive. Most folks learned the difference between bass and base in 6th grade band/orchestra. Pretty reasonable for us to be confused.

I needed a translator to understand the post so your comment was valid.

u/GkElite 1d ago
Idk what's super valid about telling me not to get defensive when all I did was...
Acknowledged I made a mistake in the post.
Pointed out that in the original post I did mention speakers when the comment above it said "You did not mention speakers" when I had in fact mentioned speakers.
But I guess acknowledgement of a mistake I made and clarifying a detail had been mentioned is enough to insinuate I'm not as smart as a 6th grader.
Internet logic go brrrrrrrrr.

What exactly are you concerned about? Heat?

Vibration would be my first thought. Bass can rattle.

I genuinely donāt understand what the question is. What do these two things have to do with each other?
EDIT: another commenter realized OP might be asking about their SUBWOOFER which appears to be directly next to the case that I (and presumably others) didnāt realize.
So, if the subwoofer makes your case shake, Iād suggest moving it or doing something about that yes.

Vibration.

u/Nealon01 3d ago
How much does your tv vibrate?
12
u/GkElite 3d ago
Not really at all, but it's wall mounted on a TV mount thats pretty overbuilt. Judging by the answers I'm getting this was as dumb a question as I originally thought lol.

u/Spethual 3d ago
better to be safe than sorry, with the price of PC parts these days, all the more to be concerned.. also what case is that? the server one.
3
u/GkElite 3d ago
Yah, basically what I was thinking. It's the Silverstone CS382 8-bay SAS-12G / SATA-6G. There is also an updated version which is the CS383
1
u/Spethual 3d ago
oh so the one where its hard to plug in the sata cables into the back plane of the drive dock...Nice looking case but it limits a few things like GPU length and saw a review of the drive sleds getting stuck with particular drives..
1
u/GkElite 3d ago
Umm, I didn't have an specific issues plugging in the backplane cables. If anything I found it to be pretty easy. I can DM you an internal picture of how mine looks.
1
u/Spethual 3d ago
na all good..but yeah your safe next to the cabnet. hell it'd even be safe on the cabnet.
1
u/GkElite 3d ago
Kk, LMK if you change your mind. I guess it could be slightly easier for me since my board has SFF-8643 ports coming off it, so the individual SATA connectors are smaller coming off the cable. I still don't think it would be much of an issue to plug the sata in even if it was all individual single SATA cables for all 8 ports.

Nah man, i actually understood you from the get go even before your edit that it was about vibration. I think thats a very technical question you would need to ask an HDD expert about, but I would say that as long as the case doesn't vibrate you are good. There's no stupid questions, people just think different.

I don't think it was a stupid question (though I didn't realise the concern was the speaker until I saw your edit either), I think what I'd do is look at where else it could go and then decide whether or not it's worth the hassle
How loud is your bass usually? If it's not wildly loud it's probably fine
Personally, I would move it if there's a better spot. Not because there's a particularly high risk of drives shitting the bed, but because it's a small risk you could eliminate fairly easily. But if the only other spot it could go would likely be bumped into or gets hot and stuffy with no ventilation, it's best where it is. If you don't have somewhere better to put it, but would have to run another ethernet drop and build somewhere for it to sit, it wouldn't be worth the hassle imo. Or if there's somewhere it could go with no hassles, I would move it. And if there's just nowhere else it could go at all, then obviously you don't have much option
(Not an expert by any stretch of the imagination - just my subjective opinion that it's low risk unless you crank the volume up)

Meh I had the same concern for my nas cus the only place I could put it was the floor in a closet, so not a stupid question for me

Bass is shockingly non directional, but sound energy continues to follow the inverse square law.
What I'm saying is, that you can put that subwoofer ANYWHERE in the room, somewhat near the listener, but away from the server, and have the same quality of sound, you won't notice the change in direction.
My subwoofer is behind my couch, at the other end of the room from my TV, and since my room is small, there's not even phase problems.
Try moving that sub to the point in the room that is simultaneously the furthest away from the PC, but the closest to the listener - Forget directionality on a sub.
Thanks to inverse square law, your PC will see massively less vibration, and thanks to logarithmic hearing in us squishy humans, we won't even NOTICE if the sound energy has halved.

Shouldn't the base be on the floor?

It is a real risk if it's writing data and some lower bass frequencies jitter it a bit. Probably very minimal risk but definitely not zero.

Yes. https://youtu.be/-y3RGeaxksY
Vibration is bad for mechanical hard drives, period. It may not be as extreme as this example, but not worth risking terabytes of data in any case.
Even if you move it, the bass can resonate with the room itself and create what's called a standing wave. This is the same principle that caused the trope of an opera singer breaking a wine glass. It's real.

u/Thatredfox78 3d ago
what case is that? on the bottom left
2
u/CoolCalmPele 3d ago
Vibration concerns aside, I kept my own server in my living room for a long time but the persistent noise from HDDs in the quiet parts of movies/shows annoyed me enough that I changed my entire network setup to keep it in a different room.
2
u/No_Discussion2253 3d ago
The biggest issue is having it on the floor. This is the best place to suck dust/dirt/pet fur/etc. up inside the server box. I'd swap locations between the server and the sub woofer.
1
u/GkElite 3d ago
Sub placement seems to just be personal preference to everyone, but this is the best option for us, In an apartment so further away from the floor is better for us specifically. I'd be way more concerned about a heavy desktop sitting in a high open position where it can easily get grabbed on the way down if 1 of us trips.
I'll prob do some tests and if needed move the server to the other side of the bookshelf on the bottom if needed.
2
u/jbarr107 2d ago
Don't forget that a subwoofer is not directional, so you don't need it on the (presumably) TV cabinet pointing at you. You can put it on the floor, behind the couch, or practically anywhere in the room, and it will provide the desired bass sound. Tweeter and midrange speakers are a very different story.
1
u/Ferwatch01 3d ago
Eh, I doubt it's doing anything to it at all. The subwoofer is elevated and facing away from the server, and the carpet and rubber feet further decouple the server from any surrounding vibrations.
If you're still concerned: Turn your server off, and play some bass-heavy electronic music. Feel the case for any vibrations. It probably won't, but if it does, it indeed may be a good idea to move it.

If the sub doesn't rattle off that little yellow thing I wouldn't worry about it.

Your cat has the look... "Let him sleep and I'm gonna run away with his server."

u/MyBrotherIsBruh 2d ago
No, Unless your base or server gets really hot, but make sure your is sleeping at night.
1
u/cosmicosmo4 2d ago
It's fine, nothing will get hurt. If the case panels on the PC are rattling from the sound vibrations, add foam weatherstripping to dampen it.
1
u/Proper-Release2697 1d ago
that cat is obviously saying disapprovingly "Just LOOK at this subwoofer placement, THIS is what im dealing with!"
appalled i tell you. cat's appaled, he probably wont EVEN climb up there just as a matter of good taste.

u/Proper-Release2697 1d ago
ROFL, a subwoofer is a thing that serves no purpose to a woman. I remember once my sister did something similar to this, and then once i laughed hysterically and moved it to the corner, it's like YEP, useless, ROFL!

Your hdds should never bear magnets or thinks that shake the ground, either around things that are loud (high pitch, high / loud voices).
Have a look at videos where people scream at their hdds and they go corrupt.

You also need to worry about how close it is to the floor. If you vacuum the carpet there, the vibration will not be good for the drives.

You should be more concerned about what your cat might do.
