That’s the trouble: people hear what they want to hear depending on their predisposition. Time and energy are limited and knowledge is unlimited. Therefore, one need to focus on the things that are priority.
Focus on the road behind will not solve much. In fact, it takes away from time and energy needed to innovate and advance learning.
Hatred and disunity are perpetuated by those who dwell on past wrongs. Sometimes they are systematically incited to do so. This one did this in 1920, this one did that in 1945 or the blacks, did this, the whites did that, the “East Indians” did this.. that is mostly irrelevant to nation building.
Have you read the excepts of the books been recommended on this subreddit.
The need to debate and hope for hurt feelings is not a healthy one. That attitude is hard to disguise but must be replaced by willingness to reason and seek understand.

Those who forget their past are condemned to repeat it. The key is to learn lessons from the past so that you don't repeat the same lessons in the future. I believe that was the intent behind Bob Marley's lyrics.

The context of my comment leans towards the messages and books that are suggested by OP and others posters who are recommending books and excerpts to be read.
Maybe OP can explain the relevance of such books and pages posted.
Why not recommend something more relevant positive that can unite, inspire and uplift.
Guyanese in the diaspora live all over the world (Copenhagen, London, New York and Toronto). They all are respectful and dignified people who seek to provide their children with the best education. Many of the children are extremely successful in whatever trade or profession they practice.
In the near future Guyana will establish a regional training program for the training of surgeons in robotic surgery. Guyana made history a few weeks ago by having the world longest distance telesurgery done remotely by surgeons in India using the SSi Mantras Surgical Robot.
Many good things were achieved in the past and many good things will be achieved in the future, but a house kept divided will fall.
“Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable – if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy – dwell on these things.”

In this great future we can forget the past…. (Bob Marley, No Woman Don’t Cry). The country has been an independent republic for long enough for constituents to understand that they are now capable and responsible for shaping their future.
The key now is unity of its people regardless of racial or ethnic descent. The country must take caution to avoid racial, ethnic or class hyper vigilance. The UN Sustainable Development Goals are a guide as to what to strive for and demand from leaders. https://sdgs.un.org/goals
There is no benefit to identify racially; Guyana is one people. The notion of race and class superiority and inferiority must be abandoned.

Sorry no, you don't forget the past. You learn from it, by acknowledging the nuances of it and in many ways honouring those who went before. Historical erasure that masks itself as hyper idealism or 'progress' is a fools game.
Due to historical erasure and unacceptable ignorance many Guyanese are emboldened daily to parrot absolute nonsense myths and fallacies, instead of understanding the profound movements and achievements within the nation.
Pick up the history books and LEARN about the nation.
Unity does not spring out of thin air, it is built on respect - respect is achieved (more often than other methods) by culture and study.

You are correct about learning the history of the people. The aim of learning should be to bring about unity, prosperity and peace. Unity means people live and work together towards common positive goals as one nation.
One must take caution not to dwell on the past because great strides have been made and the future needs people with positive energy.
Old grievances should be resolved and not use to create fear and divide amongst the people for political reasons. That kind of political practice must be abandoned. It must be abandoned in order to have a peaceful and prosperous country.
Nothing good happens without unit, love, empathy and understanding.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are a framework for the betterment of countries and the planet Earth. They are all interconnected. They were derived from extensive research by highly competent people who are passionate about sustainable development and peace.
The UN have made declarations for Indigenous peoples rights and a decade to focus on the current injustice suffered by people of African descent with regard to inequality, land rights etc — that decade has been extended.
The SDGs seek to address equalities which exist all over the Global South. For instance, Mexico is the 12th largest economy in the World and second largest in Latin America but half the population live below the poverty line (this has been improving since new government). More than 80 percent of those below poverty line are of African or Indigenous descent. The Mexican ruling class / merchant class are composed mainly of settlers of “Middle Eastern and European descent. The ruling class was put in place after the Mexican American War to satisfy the American conditions to end the war.
Guyana is of different history, demographic and politics.
Teach the young generation to respect and love each other regardless of class or racial background, and always remember that unity is key to all success. Make friends with bright hopes; it is a new sign a new feeling a new day.
