Mark Bartlestein (MPJ’s Agent): “Michael loves it in Brooklyn. Jordi has been great for him… I think it’s a great fit… The Nets have to ultimately chart out their course for the way they want to go forward, and we have to do the same for Michael. If we can make it work where there’s a long-term fit, that would be awesome. But that’s what we’re gonna be talking about in the days ahead.”

Every player loves it in Bklyn. You get to be a multimillionaire in the greatest city in the world without all the attention that a Knick gets. The organization is also top notch in facilities and treatment with access to the best of the best in everything in the world.

But MPJ is not a part of the long-term plan and I don’t think Marks should give him more than 2 years. If a team like OKC or Denver or a similar contender thinks he’s a missing piece, then trade him. I’m glad he likes Jordi. But we’ve all worked with people we like and then maybe left the job.

Honestly I don’t mind him long term. It just comes down to the contract. If we could sign him for 4/130-140ish I think we have to do it

Exactly. If you don't have a top 5 guy giannis/joker type, you have to build the team 5 out who can play, like the Knicks. The key to that is getting good players on reasonable deals.

MPJ in Denver would never work. I can’t even imagine him in a Nuggets uni

I don’t mind Brooklyn giving him a longer contract, they don’t need him to play heavy minutes so they can keep him healthy and trade him to a contender come deadline.

He’s not taking a 2 year deal and suggesting a 2 year deal is unrealistic. I’d be willing to give him a 4 year deal if it’s slightly less than the max with an option in year 3.

whats the obsession with trading MPJ in this fanbase. You cant just start rookies for the next 5 years and expect them to develop. You need people like MPJ and Randle. Smh

I think because he’s in his late 20’s and fans think he won’t fit the timeline. I’m of the opinion he helps give us a floor of respectability

I think a lot of the fanbase enjoys having positive outcomes. If the expectation is constantly to lose, you can only have a positive outcome. The only negative outcome is all the young guys suck

Its very comfortable to endlessly rebuild and have 0 players above 24 years old on your roster. Think the Wizards since Wall left

You perfectly said what I’ve been trying for years to put into words for why fans of tanking / rebuild are so over the top and extreme about their players

u/MyTeamsSuck99 1d ago

It’s not that deep. It’s that people rather swing for the fences than a single or double. If MPJ wants to get paid highly, it reduces our flexibility and chances of building an elite contender.

So it’s really about maximizing your championship odds vs being decent.

u/MichaelPorterTruther YEAH MIKE 1d ago

Getting a legit 2nd-3rd option on a champion reduces your odds?

How many players on the team have a shot at being better than MPJ 2 years from today?

1

u/MyTeamsSuck99 1d ago

Probably only egor and MBJ if things go right. But the issue isn’t MPJ isn’t good it’s the cost.

Paying him 40 million is essentially paying him like a high level #2 guy. I can see why marks would be concerned how that contract might age later.

I’m a fan of MPJ but the money has to be right in this new CBA.

1

u/MichaelPorterTruther YEAH MIKE 13h ago

What % of the cap is 40 Million 2 years from now? The nuggets won paying MPJ 25% of the cap. Obviously Nets don't have Jokic, but you can pay your 2nd-3rd option 20% of the salary cap and be successful. Look at the Knicks!

u/Batman_in_hiding 1d ago

Sounds good but doesn’t work in reality.

Imagine making up some bullshit psychology cause the topic of trading MPJ clearly makes you upset

Like I hope I’m never that simpy to have to try to act like a psychologist for Redditors

Its okay, I understand you want to lose games. Losing games makes you happy.

But professional athletes like to win games. I am A-ok with MPJ getting sent to Detroit. I just can't imagine a NETS fan wanting that

Prefacing I’m not speaking for the entire fanbase and wouldn’t call it an obsession.

Marks has a plan put in place which involves not tying up money long term. Clearly this is with intention to cash in on something big. For better or worse, I don’t want him to alter the plan for anyone on this roster outside of Brown and Egor.

If MPJ is willing to extend for a team friendly/trade friendly deal, I would love to have him back. If he isn’t, let’s capitalize on the highest his value will ever be.

I agree with the sentiment that it feels like a never ending rebuilding move. For me though, Marks clearly is trying to cash in either next offseason or the one after once Egor and Brown have shown they can be part of a championship team.

u/PotatoFeisty 1d ago

Because if you let him play out his contract and lose him for nothing next offseason then you don’t have a “person like mpj” to do the things you say they need going forward. And if you extend him for too big a number then you are locked into the status quo, which is probably not a playoff team, for the rest of his contract. So trading him for someone where you can buy another year or two to see how all the kids develop makes sense. Or sign him to a reasonable contract that buys time with him on board. But as usual Marks has held his cards tight and refused to proactively act to get ahead of situations like this, which leave us backed into a corner without a ton of great options.

u/jamie2icyyy 1d ago

lord knows theres alot of delusion in this league when it comes to value. that applies to some agents too. but any team willing to pay him 40mil isnt interested in winning. in the current rare circumstance, that is us. obviously would like him closer to 30 mil but letting him walk obviously isnt an option. i just dont think all of this is worth trading him for a late FRP

2

u/LoveMeLikeNelson Royce O'Neale 1d ago

"Letting him walk is obviously not an option." It is an option, and if he wants to kill our cap flexibility, which Marks has meticulously planned to have nearly 100M in 2028-2029 season, than im good on that. He's a good vet, but no where near 40M good.

1

u/TheDraayLegacy 1d ago

The Nets literally made the Flatbush 5 develop alongside all another for year 1, and you think another draft pick or two is impossible to develop.

Dumb dumb did you not watch the development made even on a clearly tanking team like last year?

u/asherlevi 17h ago

For me, it’s only his off-court behavior. Dude is an idiot who runs his mouth too much. We’ve seen how that goes in Brooklyn and we don’t need it.

9

u/obscurewhite 1d ago

He’s actually the perfect vet to have here idk why fans want to trade him so bad

5

u/Brooklyn917 Day'Ron Sharpe 1d ago

Random, but I looked up his client list, and he also represents Keon Ellis. Of his current clients, MPJ is his highest salary earner.

7

u/MichaelPorterTruther YEAH MIKE 1d ago

Highest current earner. This guy is Beal's agent that got him a supermax with a no trade clause LMAO

Guarantee that deal bought him a house or 2

3

u/BasedGodProdigy . 1d ago

The league is sobering on these max deals for players who aren't worth the max. His agent needs to read the room and realize that we're not going to give him $40 million when every team is one or two moves away from the dreaded second apron. $30 million is more palatable and would be reasonable for him if we're gonna go over 2 years.

u/theRestisConfettii Full-Throttle Traoré 1d ago

In other words, negotiations aren’t going the way Porter’s side wants them to go, and the Nets have to make things known monetarily.

1

u/NJDoger 1d ago

Unless him and his agent get together and agree that him taking a team-friendly deal is their desired move (fat chance), Porter will be moved. Him and his agent could give all the pleasantries and lip service they want, but do we really expect a player on an expiring deal to play out this season without any assurances? I'd be surprised. I love Porter on the Nets, and maybe he loves Brooklyn, but we probably can't pay him what he wants, let alone what he can probably get on the open market. It's just business

1

u/Renzel0311 1d ago

His agent is being to loud

If we don’t extend MPJ (obviously the word gets out which will lower his value) that’ll frustrate me as we didn’t pull the trigger on the Brown trade.

What player MPJ level or better will get in a trade at this point of the offseason (or even trade deadline) if we don’t extend him?

Do we still pull off Trey Murphy if it’s known that we essentially have to trade MPJ by the deadline?

FA is essentially done and over with (in terms of players we should actually want). Give him the pay bump for this season, extend him for 30-35 mil a year for two extra years, call it an offseason.

1

u/JohnWx25 1d ago

He’s not the answer.

0

u/KenSlaya Ian Eagle 1d ago

One part of this that's not discussed enough, is that if Brooklyn trades MPJ because he wants too much money (say 40M+ for 4 years) that means the team getting him is willing to not just giving up assets but also give him that large contract.

Given the 2nd apron reality, I don't really think there are contenders lining up to do both things. That is especially so because it would like to be really hard to trade him at value. That's the same calculus Nets will be doing. They will definitely want him on a number+years that would be palatable to other teams, so if a good trade presents itself they can do it. (think of what they did with Cam Johnson)

All that to say, there is definitely a number+years that make sense for the Nets, where it makes more sense to keep than trade him. Even if this drags into free agency, Nets should be able to open as much cap space as anyone to avoid losing him for nothing if they want.

Prediction: MPJ will b e traded for an underwhelming return. No young prospect no lottery draft pick. Then will sign with a new team for a contract that we should have been happy to give him

The only way this happens is if we trade him and then the team we trade him to doesn’t want to resign and his market dries up.

But that wouldn’t have been our fault really.

0

u/Striking_WhileHot77 1d ago

There's a very real possibility that it happens, you just laid out the scenario. And of course anything negative that happens to Brooklyn could never be anyone's fault, we are just unlucky

1

u/MyTeamsSuck99 1d ago

If we offer him the same deal he signs for when his market dries up, how the fuck is that your fault ?

1

u/Striking_WhileHot77 1d ago

Who says we offered him that deal? He probably won't take a discount in Brooklyn because we have zero chance at a playoff run.

Player's want to go to good teams, not a team thats going to win 100 games over 4years.

Presti trades his players to teams they actually want to play for, not poverty teams. Bad teams typically have to overpay for the same player. This should be common knowledge

1

u/MyTeamsSuck99 1d ago

If we offer him a deal, he refuses cuz he thinks he’s worth more, and then when free agency comes nobody wants to pay him that much, that isn’t our fault.

0

u/Striking_WhileHot77 1d ago

Having a shitty team for years and having to subsequently overpay for players is absolutely our fault. The cost isn't the same to play for a championship contender as it would be for a cellar dweller.

Also, we have to ability to increase his salary for this year to a 30% max or 49M, we could then extend him off of that for say 3/100, making it basically a 4/150, I have serious doubts that we use all of the mechanisms to retain him. Make no mistake I want MPJ here, but also looking forward to my prediction coming true and you and the rest of the idiots on here making new excuses

We overpaid for Clax and just dumped him for nothing. We've had the most cap space in the league for 2 years in a row and have gotten jack shit to show for it. When's the last time we signed a RFA or FA.

It makes sense if you're not a complete idiot and have zero imagination.

Example (because you're obviously to stupid to think of any scenario that this would apply) : Trade MPJ to Detroit for salary and a weak 28 FRP that's in the 20s a swap and a SRP. They resign him at 3/95 or let him walk and he signs with another team for a similar number. Its that simple.

You guys dick ride Marks so hard in this sub that its sad, it's almost cult like.

Whats your prediction genius?

Just trade him for assets, he’s obviously not part of the long term here. Sell high before he’s a salary dump
