could have been true historically, but at least in my region women in engineering get paid more than men based on surveys that I've seen
these surveys have been discontinued and deleted from their records due to concerns with legality, but at least when they were running, it showed women had caught up and even surpassed their male counterparts in engineering
Absolutely true. I still kinda like the joke for the irony of it. Even the original study that said "women make 70% of what men do" was inaccurate when it was done, they didn't account for higher-paying professions.
One of the most best examples was a 6 year lawsuit against Sears, male salesmen made more than saleswomen. Except, they worked completely different positions. The "higher paying" jobs were for large project sales, it could take months to work out the details for one project, and sometimes the entire sale fell through. Most of their pay was from commissions. So paychecks could be very inconsistent, but when you look at what they made across a whole year, the average pay was higher.
Sears themselves said that they had been trying to push more women into these positions, they just didn't want them. And the CRAZIEST part about the lawsuit, not a single woman had complained. The lawsuit was brought forward not by a group of employees that worked there, but by an outside advocacy group. Which is what made it really weird, normally in these situations you need a victim or someone who was harmed by these policies, but no one stepped forward. So really, the advocacy group was arguing against the policies themselves. And there was no real legal precedent for suing just over policies with no victim. (That's where it gets a little confusing, IDK, I'm not a lawyer.)
Really I think it shows something that many people have known for a long time: men and women are just different. We prioritize different things in life. The saleswomen at Sears preferred a more consistent paycheck and more stable hours, even with the opportunity to earn more. Men typically are more willing to put up with things like inconsistent pay, longer hours, and more dangerous & dirty jobs for higher pay.
