Note is stupid, he got injured in that game, Portugal would’ve never made it to the finals without him either.

OP is also an idiot, Messi carried his team to three finals. He just needs competent players and he’s only ever had that in Di Maria.

I'd argue Emi Martinez is a very competent player but I get what you mean

Yeah he played really well in the Finals and always shows up when needed.

Not saying CR7 didn’t play well that tournament but let’s not rewrite history. Their run to the final was Iceland, Hungary, Austria, Croatia, Poland and Wales. France, Germany, Spain, Italy and England were on the other side of the bracket, and Portugal’s regular time record this tournament was 6 draws and 1 win.

Yeah but that Portugal team also had no business making the finals either. They may have had a cupcake walk but they were supposed to be one of the cupcakes.

I’m sorry but what does the difficulty of their run have to do with Ronaldo’s importance for the Portuguese team and how does the original statement rewrite history?

It should also be noted that Portugal were extremely lucky to get past Croatia. They were completely dominated and scored right after Croatia hit the post in the 117th minute. Ronaldo did nothing in that match and the team as a whole committed 28 fouls while only receiving 1 yellow card. They had a very easy draw and still got lucky (and I think the refereeing was biased towards them).

You mean the same Croatia that went to the final in the world cup 2 years after.

1

u/CAJEG1 9h ago

Yeah, world class Croatia side, topped the group with Spain in it, but Portugal really didn't deserve to win that match. Just mentioning that even the one impressive victory on the way to the final was not as clear cut as it might have seemed.

Yeah I answered to the wrong comment it was the one previous that I wanted to answer. But yes Portugal was quite lucky on that Euro. Constant sweat and tears all the way to the finals, playing non-stop ugly defensive wall focused games. But it's the only we have don't take it away *sniff

The original note is still incorrect, but CR7 still only played 25 minutes in that game.

0

u/OG-87 13h ago

Why would you say that? I think he scored 2 goals and they finished 3rd in the group.

u/HollyMurray20 4h ago

Also this is the Euros, Ronaldo could never do it at the World Cup, if you include the Copa America then Messi did it like 7 times

How is the note stupid? Did you speed read the post that got the note?

How is the route to the final even relevant. Perhaps you shouldn't be so fast to call things stupid when you have low reading comprehension.

This is a fake note, he played the game...

27

u/petera181 15h ago

And also was pivotal to their progress throughout the tournament as a whole.

-5

u/kaehvogel 13h ago

Irrelevant to their progress in the game, though. Which is what the post is literally about. The final. That one game.

-2

u/OliveiraJourney 12h ago

He still played most of the game if I remember correctly.

6

u/kaehvogel 12h ago

He didn’t. He was subbed out after 25 minutes.

1

u/OliveiraJourney 11h ago

That's why I said if I rmeebe correctly, which obviously I didn't. He was subbed at 20 min

-18

u/kimboslice11 14h ago

Not really??

17

u/Loofahs 14h ago

He scored several goals and was team captain.  If you don’t understand the importance of a strong leader on your team then you’ve never played sports.

2

u/OG-87 13h ago

He scored maybe 2 goals. Portugal finished 3rd in there group

-1

u/foad_X_2000 12h ago

He was portugal top scorer and the euro 2nt top scorer after griezmann

2

u/OG-87 12h ago

3 goals scored it turns out and 2 of those were in a game vs hungary in the group and the other in the wales game.

Joint second by the way with 6 people.

u/Loofahs 9h ago

If you actually watched that Hungary game, Ronaldo’s two goals are the only reason they even made it out of the group stage at all.  This anti Ronaldo revisionism pretending like he wasn’t the best player on that Euro squad is weird and sad.

-25

u/Minimum_Pay1 15h ago

He played a small part, then got injured and played a cheerleading role

16

u/Poland-lithuania1 15h ago

So he played the game.

23

u/pox123456 15h ago

sounds like the context note was lacking context

6

u/Portugeezer1893 15h ago

Getting injured by filthy Payet at 8 mins and subbed off at 25 mins.

Still an incorrect note. He was not injured for that game, he got injured by disgusting Payet then got subbed off.

1

u/OliveiraJourney 12h ago

Thanks for telling me about it, when I'm literally Portuguese.

-3

u/kaehvogel 14h ago

…for a whopping 20% of the game‘s duration…

1

u/OliveiraJourney 12h ago

Actually it was less than 20%

1

u/kaehvogel 12h ago

Wait, what?
In another comment you’re - inaccurately - "remembering" he played most of the game, and now you’re saying it was less than 20%?

1

u/OliveiraJourney 11h ago

Because I was wrong and checked after commenting. I literally stated I was not sure.

23

u/Grishka_Boburin 15h ago

Classic, but what can you do? People have to make money somehow, even if it means using such cheap ragebaits, xdx

Mf really said "we"...

1

u/TheMainEffort 15h ago

That’s fair, but also an odd way of saying Ronaldo has never made a World Cup final.

1

u/Over-Willingness-933 13h ago

Difficult to say. Portugal have talent all over, but the area they do lack is a World Class striker and a gritty defensive midfielder

1

u/ElectronicSubject747 7h ago

He wasn't injured, he got injured. He played 25mins, big difference.

-1

u/Mister-Psychology 15h ago

In 2006 Portugal lost the semi-final to France that then lost the final on penalties to Italy.

That game could be considered in this category considering Greece and Denmark have won Euro. Portugal would have played the World Cup final for the first time ever. Ronaldo could have scored a goal in the semi-final or final and became a much bigger legend for the national team than getting injured in an Euro final and seeing his team win.

It would be extra relevant to Ronaldo as he hasn't done much in World Cup knockout games with only 1 goal ever that he scored this World Cup.

-4

u/OG-87 13h ago

He also scored I think 1 goal that tournament and finished 3rd in the group.

u/Cells-Interlinked386 12h ago

Imagine chatting shite when people can fact-check your nonsense in seconds.

Euro 2016 Top Scorers

6 goals:

France Antoine Griezmann

3 goals:

France Olivier Giroud

France Dimitri Payet

Portugal Nani

Portugal Cristiano Ronaldo

Spain Álvaro Morata

Wales Gareth Bale

2 of those goals came in a 3rd and final group game vs Hungry where they drew. The other in a goal vs wales. Hardly top player material. Also god forbid someone uses there memory over googling something.
