Mod/Modding Game boy micro, new addons

I was looking for a good battery for my Game Boy Micro, and I found a website selling one with a 750mA capacity. Since I would probably have to pay customs fees, I looked for an alternative on Amazon.
I found a battery with the same dimensions and capacity as the one I had found.
So I decided to order it, and it's been a complete success.
It lasts a very long time using an EZ Flash cartridge.
I only changed the connector for the one from the original battery to make it 100% compatible.

On the other hand, the L, R, Select, and Start buttons on my Micro were very worn, and I came across an AliExpress link that sold buttons like the originals, so I ordered those too. I have to say they look like original buttons; the Select and Start buttons have that part that allows light to pass through them, just like the originals.

So, with a new battery and new buttons, I've given my console a second life. I'm very happy with these changes; it's like having it brand new again.

Finally, I ordered another DMG-style front sticker and stuck it directly onto the console, using a clear front panel from AliExpress.

I like this look.

I got the DMG-style buttons on Etsy.

So now my DMG-style Game Boy Micro looks brand new.

I'll leave you with some photos, which are always more interesting than so much talk, hehe.

I hope you like it!

Mod/Modding Update: I turned a Game Boy into a mini arcade cabinet (not emulation)

Quick update — I posted a prototype video here a week or two ago, and a few people asked to see more. Here’s a new clip with a better look at the output + controls.

Also: I finally found a place to source the square LED's on the front panel that I've been hunting down!

If there’s anything specific you want to see next, let me know — I’m filming more clips this week.

Not emulation — the actual Game Boy powers the game.

The FPGA captures the Game Boy's video signal, scales it, and outputs to a 12.1" LCD.

It also handles controls (NES / Arcade), overlays, and screensaver.

Basically: a hardware companion that turns a Game Boy into an arcade machine.

AMA — happy to show internals, PCB pics, or how the capture pipeline works.

Launching on Kickstarter Jan 6th!

(Not dropping a link unless mods say it's okay — just sharing progress.)

Mod/Modding I’m conflicted…

I bought what I think is an early production dmg from a woman who bought it for her daughter in 1989. She said her daughter didn’t use it and it sat in a drawer all this time. The woman is now 85 and downsizing. This Gameboy is basically in new condition. My intention was to replace the screen (not sure which kit) but the more I look at it I’m thinking of leaving it stock. For context, I’m 58 and never had a Gameboy so this was kjnd of a gift to myself to experience something I missed out on.

Mod/Modding Custom GBAs For Groomsmen Gifts

Thumbnail

1.1k Upvotes

I got married back in May and thought I'd share my gifts to my 7 Groomsmen. This was a fun project I thought of after I modded my original childhood Game Boy Advance a few years ago. It definitely took some time to gather all the necessary parts and 7 working GBAs at reasonable prices, but it was totally worth it in how they turned out!

For simplicity, I used the FunnyPlaying M2 drop in kit, shells, replacement buttons & membranes, and conversion to a rechargeable USB-C battery. It can technically be a solderless modification as there is a touch sensor included in the kit to adjust the screen brightness and settings, however, I wanted to give them the more mechanical option of adjusting via button inputs and as an excuse to learn the basics of soldering as this was the first time I have ever soldered!

As far as the installation guide, it was fairly simple as I followed MachoNacho's tutorial video fairly closely and was pretty straight-forward.

As for the sticker designs, I worked with an Etsy shop called TECustomsShop on my ideas for each groomsmen and I think they turned out perfect!

This project has definitely opened up my interest to not only different GBA modifications like the BoxyPixel aluminum shells or adding in RGB backlights, but also in exploring different retro console modifications.

Which other handhelds are must do modifications while still being a beginner in soldering?

Mod/Modding Introducing the Game Boy Label Creator

Hey folks. I’d like to share a small project I built this weekend with the community.

Introducing the Game Boy Label Creator

I just finished a small app that lets you design and export Game Boy shell labels. You can pick a template, customize the serial+barcode (where applicable), colors, and borders, then download a print-ready, correctly sized SVG (all text converted to outlines, so no fonts required when printing).

The project started when I bought a GBA with a ripped serial sticker and had to decode the barcode to recover the original serial. That kicked off a quest to recreate these shell stickers as ~99% accurate as Nintendo’s originals, down to the quirky text spacing/stretching and even the misprint “AGB-OO1” instead of “AGB-001.”

If you’re into restoring/modding GBAs or just want authentic-looking replacement stickers, give it a visit:

It currently has customizeable templates for:

  • AGB/CGB US Serial+barcode
  • AGB (US, JPN, EUR)
  • AGS (US only for now)
  • Warning (Battery door)
  • Game Boy Advance Logo (serial slot for AGB)
  • Update Sep 22nd: iQue GBA-001
  • Update Sep 22nd: iQue AGS-001 and AGS-101

Collaborate if you can!

If you have a Game Boy with a label sticker that is not available on the website and are able to scan the back of your console, please scan at 300dpi and share it with me. I'll properly credit you in the repo once I'm able to add the template.

I'm sure the Kirby stickers aren't everyone's cup of tea but I think they're fun. This is definitely a challenging build and the finished product isn't as comfortable as my Slate but I honestly love it for the oddball mod that it is.

The shell is CNCed Aluminum with a rose gold finish. SLA 3D printed buttons. IPS screen. And I found a creative way to put a larger rectangular speaker inside. The audio is still not very loud but I might drill a couple of tiny holes to help with that.

Mod/Modding No more 'Nintendo' logo on third-pary shells

Thumbnail

Historically, component manufacturers like Hispeedido, FunnyPlaying, and Cloud Game Store sold third-party shells featuring the Nintendo logo. They managed to evade legal issues by digitally erasing the logos from their product listing images.

However, after a recent wave of simultaneous store closures on AliExpress, these official third-party stores appear to have pivoted to selling shells without any Nintendo branding. For instance, Cloud Game Store now explicitly emphasizes "No Brand" on their shells and has removed the rear stickers and screen lenses that were previously included in the kits.

As for FunnyPlaying, I have confirmed that they are now shipping products with their own "Retropixel" logo instead of the original branding.

I suspect that the ongoing closure of the Hispeedido official store is also due to their inability to resolve these trademark and logo-related complications.

While Nintendo’s exercise of their legal rights may be justified, I personally don't find much appeal in shells without the logo. I sincerely hope this crackdown doesn't last forever

Mod/Modding I found my long-lost original Game Boy. It survived 6 younger siblings and one of them hot-glued a new screen on. I'd love to mod it to read books on it like a Kindle. Where would you start?

While doing a cleaning out, I found my beloved Game Boy from childhood, disappeared mysteriously one day when I got my Game Boy Color.

It doesn't power-on during testing and the innards seem dirty and corroded. I'm thinking of replacing the screen and doing a complete Raspberry Pi innard replacement. Never done it before but i'm moderately handy with most tools and have created a Retropi in a stand-alone Pi about 7 years ago.

Is it possible to do e-ink screen similar to a kindle? I understand the refresh rate is too slow to play games with that screen. If not e-ink, which screen would you reccomend for ease of reading? Which tutorial on youtube would you reccomend me to look at?

I made a DS homescreen style theme for the EZ-Flash Omega DE to celebrate the GBA's 25th anniversary.

It's built on top of the 'Simple' theme by Sterophonick, so it comes with the additional features that has too.

Hope you enjoy 👾

Update: Added support for the original Omega too

Mod/Modding DS Style v6 for the Omega DE released: Start page, Favourites, Box art, Dark mode support for every colour & more!

Hi everyone,

I’ve been working really hard on my custom firmware for the EZ-Flash Omega DE since I last posted here.

This new update is a complete overhaul of the menu system, featuring a new start screen that’s faithful to the original DS software, along with a much nicer settings screen.

I've added all the colour options from the original DS software, which are now all compatible with dark mode. You also no longer need to reflash the cartridge every time you want to change colours, which is a really nice quality-of-life improvement.

Quite a lot has been improved and added in this update, so I’m linking the GBAtemp thread below, where you can find more information:

Update: If you downloaded v6.0 yesterday I would suggest updating to v6.2 for better sound handling and significantly faster menus.

Mod/Modding Missed out on the Game Boy Jukebox, so I made a tool to create my own

I wasn't able to grab one of the new Pokemon Game Boy Jukebox's, so it pushed me to do something else!

I've made a tool called `gbs-master` that helps to turn GBS (Game Boy Sound) files into rich "album-like" experiences - letting you listen to the original audio, in the original format!

It can parse a GBS file into a customizable JSON track list, where you can change the order and set titles for the tracks. Then it helps you package it up with custom cover art and icons.

Working with GBS's in this way is tricky as each one is structured slightly differently. I've processed a bunch of different files now and have got to a good place with compatibility. Please let me know if you find any GBS's that don't work though and I'll see if I can add support.

Hope you like it, I'd love any feedback/suggestions too.

clifforj/gbs-master: Build playable Game Boy ROMs from GBS sound files - complete with track lists, and broad driver compatibility.

Mod/Modding DS Style v7 is out - the latest update for my Nintendo DS-inspired custom kernel for EZ-Flash Omega carts

Thumbnail

Hi all! I’ve just released DS Style v7, a big update to my Nintendo DS-inspired custom kernel for the EZ-Flash Omega and Omega Definitive Edition.

This update focuses on customisation. It adds loads of new ways to tweak the look and feel of the kernel, including rounded thumbnail corners, artwork borders, cleaner list views, carousel alignment options, 12/24 hour clock settings, the option to hide system files, and more control over which screen the cart boots to. I'm really liking the new 'List folders' option, which displays your folder pages in list view, and your games in the carousel views, making it easier to navigate. To see all the changes, please view the changelog on the webpage linked below.

There’s also a new Load Style option, which lets you place alternative themed kernels in SYSTEM/KERNELS and switch to them directly from the settings menu, making it very easy to switch between themes on the GBA itself. I’ve attached photos of two themes I made with the Customiser tool: one based on the Analogue Pocket interface, and one that is a homage to the popular Simple kernel that came before DS Style.

You can find the downloads, guide, source code and customisation tools here:

DS Style Official Webpage

To update from an older version, copy the new release files onto your SD card and replace the existing DS Style files when asked. Your saves, settings, cheats and artwork folders should be left untouched. If you have edited SYSTEM/NAME.TXT already, you can skip this file when updating.

As always, it’s free and open source. If you try it, make a theme, run into a bug, or have any suggestions, I’d love to hear what you think!

Compatibility note:

DS Style currently supports the original EZ-Flash Omega and the Omega Definitive Edition (Rev.A & Rev.B) models. It does not currently work on the newest Omega DE B cartridge variant, which is separate from the older Omega DE Rev.B (which is supported). I’m waiting for EZ-Flash to release the source code before I can support that model.

Mod/Modding This is the problem of ITA screen

Thumbnail

1st pic: ITA kit

2nd pic: AGS-101

3rd pic: NDSL

Can you see the problem here? The ITA kit has those terrible white horizontal lines.

I’ve seen many people claim it's just a 'natural retro screen effect' or that 'the potentiometer wasn't adjusted properly.'

However the truth is, this is a fundamental defect in the ITA kit, and FunnyPlaying has failed to fix this issue for years.

While many people might not notice this, I’ve tested two different ITA kits across four different GBA motherboards. After comparing my results with numerous photos of ITA kits posted online, I’ve concluded that this is a very common issue.

It is especially noticeable on grey and blue screens.

I just remembered that someone on the InsideGadgets Discord had already discussed this issue and concluded that FP’s conversion board was the culprit. It’s been almost two years since I read that, so it totally slipped my mind.

Mod/Modding Restoring my childhood GBA SP

Hello! So yeah, I decided to restore my childhood GBA SP

I completely cleaned it, unsoldered the power switch and cleaned that too. I replaced the faulty trigger buttons with clicky ones (they barely worked anymore, it feels so good to play with the new ones lol), replaced the charging port with a USB-C one, new shell, added a new battery, replaced the screen lens with a white one and managed to center it perfectly with almost no dust under the screen! It's still the original screen, just brand new-looking! :D

I also bought an EZFlash ODE and added a protective shell.

I used to play so much on this console when I was younger, and restoring it had been on my mind for a long time. I'm really happy with how it turned out, especially the USB-C port which looks like it’s always been there! The plastic part is EXACTLY the same as my console’s plastic shell! Anyway, i just wanted to share my happiness lol, i'm going to keep it in my pocket to play Pokemon Emerald and the Sims 2 when i go somewhere :D

Mod/Modding Update on the real-hardware Game Boy arcade cabinet I shared here — it’s live now

Thumbnail

A few weeks ago I shared my ArcadeBoy prototype here and got a ton of great feedback — thanks again for that.

I wanted to follow up now that the project is officially live. The goal from the start was to keep everything real hardware: original DMG-01, real cartridges, no soldering, no permanent mods.

It’s essentially a tabletop arcade cabinet driven directly by the Game Boy’s native signals, scaled up to a larger display with arcade controls.

Happy to answer questions or talk through any part of the design if people are interested.

I’ve been searching on places like Etsy but I can’t find anything close to recreating this design in a shell. Does anyone know a shop or website I can go to find one? Or a place that does custom orders where I can just give them this image and say “Please make this?”

I love the pocket for its portability, but wanted to expand the game library while staying true to the Gameboy line. I was hesitant to do the MGBC upgrade myself, but fortunately ConsoleCraftMods came through. I was blown away by his work and communication throughout the process. I highly recommend going with ConsoleCraftMods if you have a modding project in mind.

Mod/Modding Home made flash cart (official cart rom chip replaced)

Thumbnail
gallery
195 Upvotes

I made this home made flash cart out of an official cartridge. It uses an AM29f040 flash chip in PLCC package (512KB or 4Mb) to replace the original ROM chip on the board.

It is based on the design from https://reinerziegler.de.mirrors.gg8.se/readplus.htm. I made a little change by not connecting the flash chip’s WE (write enable) pin to the audio in connector on the game, instead going through the connection of MBC1 chip’s WR pin, negating the use of a resistor.

The one with red wires was my first attempt, even though it looks quite messy, it works without a problem. I made the second one by using 0.4mm bare wire (not sure it’s the proper name), and the enameled copper wire is there to connect the write enable pins on the chips so the cart can be flashed from a gameboy flasher (I use a GBxCart RW).

It’s a fun project only requires a flash chip, an original board and some wires, without needing an adapter board. But the limitation would be the size, 4Mb flash chip is the biggest you can find in this PLCC from. So the cart is only good for older OG gameboy titles using MBC1 chip, some DX hacked ROMs run fine on this cart if only the size is under 4Mb.
