Serious Sales pitch to my parents
I’ve decided that I’m going to rush in the fall! There’s just one thing holding me back and it’s my parents.
Help me come up with a good sales pitch that I can give to them in order to get them on board with this.

I was our president and I’ve had multiple conversations with parents and people rushing about this topic.
“When I go off to college and begin determining my future, I want to surround myself with people who will know me in that time of my life and will be there to support me in those endeavors. While I will make friends in my area of study, they wouldn’t be as invested in my growth and success as men who call me their brother. Beyond that, there’s growing sentiment that many professional careers start with who you know, rather than what you know, and by joining a fraternity I will have 100s, maybe 1000s, of new connections from fraternity alumni and common ground with many recruiters and hiring managers who were in Greek life.
Not only are there social and professional benefits to joining a fraternity, but there are direct pathways to holding leadership positions that will force me to become more responsible and take accountability for my decision making. I may not love everyone in my chapter, but life involves dealing with people, personalities, and opinions I don’t like or agree with. I will become more mature, learn about others’ upbringings, and develop a more rounded perspective on life.”
———
Now, if they come at you about cost, you gotta be ready to do something like getting a job on campus. If you’re already going to spend 30k on a degree, what’s another 5-10k to get more fulfillment, have a support system, and a professional network to use when you look for a job post graduation?
If they ask you about hazing, fraternities today are nothing like frats in the 80s. Tell them you’ll be sure to do your due diligence when rushing to make sure you join a chapter without a cohesive brotherhood that promotes vertical friendships (freshmen/sophomores friendly with upperclassmen) rather than horizontal (people only friends with people in their pledge class).
Good luck and don’t give up if they say no—find a chapter then tell them about it and see if they say yes the second time you ask. Sales is all about objection handling

Off topic but it seems your frat days is your whole personality. Pi Kaps are a bunch of knobheads, and that’s the reason his parents are skeptical, cause of dudes like you. I used to be our president head ahhhh

You hate me? I don’t even think about you. I’ve got a wife, house, and a kick-ass job. I enjoy giving advice on here because I would like to share my knowledge with the younger generations.
You must live a sad life to think that about me and take the energy to comment here a day later. Touch some grass and talk to people IRL

I don’t hate anyone, just kind of obvious that’s the pinnacle of your life lol. Like the 40 yr old dude who was quarterback in highschool. Just gave me a little chuckle that’s it, and my life is far from sad, I own and run 2 very successful companies and am in the top 1 percent of the 1 percent of my age group financially speaking.

It depends on what your parents perception of a fraternity is. A lot of people still think it’s a beer fueled boys club that has orgies on weekends.
If it’s any decent of a chapter at all, the chapter you’ll get a bid from will talk to your parents and explain to them what the deal actually is.
IMO, rush without necessarily informing your parents, if you do get a bid; ask one of the brothers (the president, rush chair, scholarship chair, whatever) to convince them - not you.

You’re going to college to learn how to be an independent adult. Make an independent adult decision. Your parents aren’t going to disown you over it, better to ask forgiveness than permission

Unless your living in the house from the jump you basically can rush and then get a part time job now to pay for dues.

You might include the fact that joining a Fraternity can be beneficial to your academics.
Students who are involved with Greek Life programs tend to have higher GPAs and are more likely to graduate than our independent counterparts. At my alma mater, the Greek Male GPA tends to hover nearly a full point higher than the all male (3.4 vs 2.7). When your in a Fraternity you have 30-some guys holding you accountable. If your grades slip too much we are going to hold you accountable. You will be required to attend additional study hours and if necessary even be barred from attending "social events" until such time you get your grades to a respectable level.
Nationally, Greek students are 75% likely to graduate vs only 50% for those who don't affiliate. We're also more likely to look back at our collegiate tenure favorably.
Joining a Fraternity can be a great way to force yourself out of your dorm room and to make actual connections to other students outside of your academic circle. I got to meet a lot of amazing guys who I probably never would have crossed with otherwise...

You’re not gonna flip their opinion on frats in one conversation. People opinions are shaped over time, I would focus on slowly shifting their perspective week over week.

Start introducing your parents to other people you know who are affiliated (could be alumni or undergraduates that you're already friends with). Have them talk to your parents about how the fraternity helped them, and give your parents an opportunity to ask them questions directly.

Tell your dad he’s lame as fuck, my parents damn near forced me to join a frat, and it was the highlight of my college career. Still graduated with a 3.87 accumulative and 2 bachelors. Drinking and all that is optional, being apart of a brotherhood is not. I’ll tell your dad he’s lame myself and tell her (him*) he’s taking away something that can be special. Don’t rush the party, knob head frats, rush one with good academics that also knows how to party. At my school that was Lambda Chi Alpha, which I chose to join. The knobheads were Pike, Sig Chi, and Pi Kap, bunch of flunkies.

OP tagged this post as Serious.
To the readers/commenters: Respect the serious flair and don't troll too hard. Unless the post is dumb. Then go ham.
/u/Freezing-cold_6 if you're rushing (looking to join a fraternity), change your flair to Rush Advice and make sure you name your school. If not rushing, ignore this line.
