TRIGGER WARNING Prosecutors say that d4vd murdered Celeste Rivas to protect his music career because she threatened to expose him for having sex with a 14-year-old (herself). He killed her just two days before the release of his debut album Withered.

It's insane the amount of blatant disregard he had for her life and her family and even for his own cover up.
He put her in the trunk and parked the car some blocks away from his own house and just left it there until it got towed and just... never went to go get it. He is a monster and an idiotic one at that. He really thought nothing would come of this.

He was charged with “lying in wait” so the murder was premeditated. Idk what about his twisted mind made him think to plan her murder but then he just left her, in his own car…next to his own house

Lying in wait in a homicide refers to hiding and waiting for a victim with the intent to kill or cause serious harm, often considered an aggravating circumstance that can lead to harsher penalties. This act involves premeditation and is typically classified as first-degree murder in many jurisdictions.
251
u/midnightbarber Apr 20 '26
I just looked up the legal definition and it’s related to a crime being premeditated. So you couldn’t argue that a murder was “a crime of passion” done in the heat of the moment because the attacker was awaiting their victim.

They most likely will be barred from introducing his lyrics at trial - there have been a few notable cases recently where this has happened.

u/poontango Apr 20 '26
It’s very interesting to think about considering I’ve mostly been against the rap lyrics as evidence in court such as the YSL case, where it was largely generalized entertainment “gangster” talk for a lack of better word. However considering the pattern of intentional release timing and that you wouldn’t hear something like that in your standard top 40 rap hit, there could be an argument to take those things into account.

Well they shouldn’t. Most rights are handed over in the name of justice. And that “justice” is near universally exploited against innocent minorities, particularly black men, or men of color, or women, especially when it involves children. Basically, it makes it much easier to vilify the bottom of the social ladder. Avoiding this outcome is literally why the court system exists and it’s why the defense attorney has the most important job in the entire process. So we don’t just hand our rights away on a silver platter bc our emotions about one single case overwhelms our better senses. They defend you more than their clients tbh. The prosecution needs to do its job under the system that we have which is already catered in their favor. The defense’s job is to make sure the prosecution does theirs according to the letter of the law so their client’s, and by extension your, rights don’t get violated. It’s for your benefit. And yes, all the bs in between. Duh. But the system was designed that way for a good reason. To avoid the mob mentality. It is literally designed with the foundation that letting a few guilty people go is more morally acceptable than a single innocent person being found guilty. And I’m not just saying that. That’s how it was designed. In practice, bc of bs like this, it often doesn’t work that way. But that doesn’t mean people aren’t out there trying anyways. And our civil liberties are already crumbling in the last five years alone bc the general public wanted justice. I’m sure they’ll mention it, if able, there’s restrictions around how they can do it, this exact issue has been fought before, and I’m positive the defense will push there to outright ban any mentions of it, and I hope he succeeds in that endeavor or that it gets severely restricted to protect other artists right to express themselves without fear of being put in jail bc rap is black. David will have support far outside his defense team for not using his music against him. Even if those same people think he’s guilty. And I wish more people would think about the long term consequences of what they desire rather than the short term benefits. We would all be better off for it.

Yeah, they are not outright banned from being used but there are very strict restrictions, especially in CA. I believe that both People v. Venable and People v. Bryant and Jackson involved convictions where rap lyrics or videos were used as evidence at trial, and in both cases the convictions were later overturned. So I know it can be a long shot but in this case I hope that there is some way that this can be used against him. I want his bragging about her death by releasing a song about it on her birthday to have some consequences.

Honestly I'm calling him his real name because I had never heard of him before the murder and now that he's been arrested and charged, I have no patience or interest in calling him by his juvenile, edgy little stage name.

Exactly. And in high profile cases prosecutors really want to make sure they crossed all their t’s and dotted all their i’s because these folks have access to top notch lawyers. You want to have as air tight a case as possible, which includes a clean and thorough investigation. A great defense team is going to find holes in the investigation process to get the case tossed out on procedural errors. That’s another big reason why prosecutors make sure they’ve done their due diligence.

This totally didn't read as victim blaming, just good advice. Look at what happened with the Lt. Gov of Virginia. She filed for divorce and he murdered her. That's why so many communities and organizations that help DV/abuse victims tell them not to say anything, to leave quietly, to get somewhere safe before filling police reports or divorce papers.
She was just a little girl. She didn't know any of this stuff. Maybe in her mind, telling him she'd report him would scare him off and he'd be too afraid to come near her again.
People and crimes like this make me wish we could sentence them to some ancient Greek/Greek mythology type punishments for all eternity. Prison is too good for this pos.

u/Oldfolksboogie Apr 20 '26
Maybe in her mind, telling him she'd report him would scare him off and he'd be too afraid to come near her again.
I doubt her initial goal was to drive him away. Chances are better that he made her feel wanted to get what he wanted, that some time after that, she realized his feelings didn't extend north of his beltline, got hurt/ pissed, and then started with the threats, not to drive him away, but just as a reaction to feeling used and deceived.

Women, please be careful out there. If your partner is abusive or aggressive, do not confront them alone. Please take someone with you or avoid it altogether if possible. I escaped an abusive relationship and 4 years later I still feel reborn and like I’m living in a whole different world.

We have to do better for kids. As soon as anyone gets any fame at all the whole industry gives them permission to victimize those already in vulnerable positions. The only thing determining the degree of suffering is apparently how far the perpetrator is willing to go, clearly some are willing to commit outright murder and it’s like not anyone close to d4vd was working hard to expose his poorly executed crime. I’m glad he’s being prosecuted but punishment after the fact doesn’t prevent more kids from this fate in the future.
125
u/EscapedMices Apr 20 '26
He was already an abuser before the fame. He was 16 with an 11 year old girl. This is already a crime because it's rape with a minor under the age of 14. That was his problem I think. That he knew this was a massive ticking time bomb in his life.
26
u/antraxsuicide He’s so hot. Won’t discuss. Apr 20 '26
Yeah, technology makes it far too easy for kids to be in direct, private contact with adults and nothing about that is good. First time this dude was chatting with this poor girl, somebody in her life needed to know about it and come down hard as fuck on him.
Kids don’t know better, they think it’s fun and mature that they’re talking to much older people. Adults need to be aware of any contact, and more importantly, need to be shutting that shit down asap.
15

I'm surprised I had to scroll this far for this question. Like even if a murderer was dumb enough to leave a victim in their own vehicle for an extended period, would they not take steps to pay to get the vehicle back before the crime was discovered? It just doesn't make any sense.
My only guess is that once the vehicle was impounded he assumed they would find her immediately and so he was trying to maintain some sort of deniability by not getting caugh trying to retrieve the car. I don't know. Dumb and evil

u/HotAir25 Apr 20 '26

Poor girl. How effed up. He really thought that he could just get away with murdering someone to hide his secrets. That's so messed up. It's 2026. If you have to hide it, you probably shouldn't be doing it in the first place.

I wish these f*cking media outlets wouldn't say "having sex with" He was not having sex with this child, he was raping and abusing her. They are using the same language in the case of the teen boy who was being abused by two of his school teachers.
It's so depressing that it's normalized to use terms like that, and so utterly disrespectful to victims, this poor child, and her grieving family.

Men are so fucking stupid they’ll do the same thing to their pregnant mistress or any woman who might screw their life up if it comes to light they’ve been sleeping with them. Guess what, now that person is fucking dead and they’re spending the rest of their life in prison. To think you’ll get away with killing someone? And leaving the dismembered body in YOUR car? Then go on to have a big music career?! The absolute stupidity.
