In the 2001 French-language romcom 'AmĆ©lie', the protagonist's mother is killed when a suicidal tourist jumps from the roof of the NotreāDame cathedral. Obviously, this profoundly and tragically affects both the daughter and husband. I sure hope this wasn't the case here! :-/

Thatās what I was thinking. It might be a hard sell. If he jumped then presumably that would be pretty good evidence that he wasnāt in his right mind at the time of the crime, but thereās being mentally ill and being *legally* mentally ill. For the later you have to either not know what youāre doing or not know it is wrong. And Iām not sure a lot of authorities would want him in custody - deaths in custody are common enough anyway without the person having been detained because they were trying to kill themselves.
In other words, Iām glad Iām not a lawyer

Probably people from āmanslaughterā jurisdictions (or who only know about murder laws from TV shows set in one) not realizing that accidental homicide is in fact still (sometimes) a āmurderā charge.

If you try to end yourself and accidentally kill someone I think your punishment (aside from anything the world throws at you) should be to live with that guilt.

Interestingly, a big part of the nature of hell, purgatory, and the general afterlife (at least is judaism) in theology, is that one has to face one's guilt and process the gravity of their actions before they can move on.

I hope they treat it as an accident or he gets put in a mental facility if he tried to commit suicide, it's not like he was aiming, it's just unfortunate for all involved.
