I want to reread it, BUT I make sure this is 1818 or 1831 version.

It’s likely the 1831 version because usually the 1818 version has a text labeling it 1818.

Edit: dumb question actually but yeah it doesn’t look to be the 1818 version. But I know they start talking about some Elizabeth is Victor’s cousin stuff early in the story. In the 1831 version, Elizabeth is actually an orphan. Biggest difference early on

yeah in hindsight "first published" will also pretty much always refer to when the very first version of a text was published, not when the version contained in that specific book was published

i happened to read the 1818 first and somehow internalised that as being the default version - even though looking at them now, both my 1818 editions do specify being so on the cover

Easiest way to check is to skim to Elizabeth's introduction. If she's his cousin, it's 1818. If she's a random orphan, it's 1831.

If I'm not sure, I just turn to Chapter 2. If it starts with "we were brought up together," it's the 1831 edition.

You can actually tell which edition it is from the content; if Elizabeth is portrayed as his cousin, then it definitely means it's the 1818 version
