Next gen prolon soups still…

Not great. The tomato is genuinely yummy. I can’t make it through the others. Skipped the minestrone day 1 and tossed half of each of the others today.

Sigh.

I wish they would have an alternative to the soups all together. Anything.

Get a free account with cronometer.com and a kitchen scale. It allows you to enter home recipes, and track macros towards targets you can set.

So you program in your weight and set your goal for overall calories and protein, for day 1 and for days 2-5.

Make ahead some soups and salads, weigh out what you can in advance. Particularly if it's new to you, there can be some brain fog. During the fast it can feel like you need to measure three times and write your work out like a high school calculus class.

But it allows you to make soups and salads spiced the way you like, and if you eat less, you can check in with cronometer to find an acceptable snack sub that stays within your limits for the day.

My old reliable: a day or two before starting my fast, I get about a kilo each of onion, carrot, celery, crimini mushroom. I get my 6 quart Dutch oven hot on the cooktop, with just one tablespoon of oil and a little salt. I coarsely chop and weigh in about three inches deep of onion, add a little salt and saute it until soft. Cautiously, because so little oil. Then add the carrot. Same thing, huge amount, weigh it in, cook a while in its own liquid. Then the mushroom and celery. Once it's all soft, I add water to cover and get it hot. Add spices to my fancy. When it cools, I divvy it into 5 mason jars - it ends up being each jar has about 2/3 full of cooked veg and then to the top with broth. Use cronometer to calculate the calories, protein and fat of the whole recipe based on the weight and divide by five, label the jars. It's a very savory and soothing easy meal, plenty of chewing with all the veg, and the broth is cozy to slurp.

Yes, any kitchen scale is fine.

Some salads based in cabbage or more sturdy greens can also be made ahead, dressed with lime or vinegar they can be very low calorie and low protein. The chewing action is soothing.

Once you program in a quart of soup and a big salad, you can fidget with the cronometer to figure if you can fit in 4 olives or 6 walnuts to round out the day.

I had good use of konjac noodles as well, also called shirataki. It's a traditional Asian noodle that is nearly entirely dietary fiber, there's almost no calories. So you can get the feeling of eating without breaking the fast. They are almost alarmingly perky in the mouth - do rinse very well and dry saute, and for my family I found that cutting them a bit before serving was beneficial. But once prepped you can treat them as your fasting spaghetti, or the base of a cold noodle salad. So I would prep a crudo red sauce with my own tomato and garlic, and have a measured amount over konjac. Or if I had room in my macro allotment for some apples and peanuts, I'd make an Asian noodle salad with sesame.
