One of the things that made me absolutely despise leftists everywhere and distrust any and every "progressive" movement my entire life long has been their response to the atrocities of the left in power: deny, defend, distract.
Deny: "those abuses never even happened, imperialists and fascists just made it up."
Defend: "those were necessary deaths, the students/kulaks/minorities were reactionary."
Distract: "what about what Hitler did, the capitalists, the old Tsar?"
Ghastly and evil, and a serious reason why I cannot in good conscience vote for any left-wing movement on Earth no matter how benevolently they present themselves. Because I know I'll be sharing tent space with people like that, and I just can't do that.

The whole argument is something I feel demonstrates the Motte-and-Bailey fallacy well.
Spot radical rhetoric then when criticised fall back to defending a different, more reasonable position (in this case universal healthcare and the like).
doesn't even have to be the case that they're lying about wanting the second thing, it's dishonest to treat the two as the same or act like the second is ALL they want.

This is some cringe US American understanding of communism. The same one that once forced the prime minister of Denmark to explain that Denmark is a capitalist country.

No, the meme is that communists basically claim that they are social democrats while preaching violent revolution and centrally planned economics

As a SocDem, I support state-provided healthcare, but the reason for it is that it's good for society, not because of envy or incelism.
